Pinning quilts to Pinterest OK?
I love looking at the quilts everyone posts. I am an active Pinterest user. I save quilts from all over the internet and use them for inspiration, layout ideas, border ideas, color combinations, etc. If you have shared a picture of a quilt, how do you feel about someone pinning it? I do not sell quilts, personal use only. I didn't want to pin any of the lovely quilts without making sure it was acceptable. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, feelings on this. |
If someone wants to keep a picture private they should never post it on the internet. That goes for more than quilts!
|
I, too, enjoy looking at quilts on Pinterest and searching for specific quilt ideas, many of which I save to my page. There is certainly a lot of inspiration out there so my bucket list just grows and grows.
|
I have personally had several quilt pics I have posted here pinned on Pinterest. When I first discovered them via my own Pinterest browsing I was a bit taken aback but that quickly subsided and I was happy and flattered someone thought enough of my quilt to pin.
I agree with Dunster, that once you put something out on a public site on the internet it is fair game and the QB is a public site. In fact it is in the T&C of internet brands that by posting a picture on the QB you are giving Internet Brands the right to use that picture if they so desire. It is nice to ask permission to Pin someones picture but it isn't required and if your pinterest board is set to private no one will ever know but few are set to private. Often by the time I find a Pin, it has been repinned numerous times and it is difficult to find the origination of the picture, let alone the maker or quilter of a quilt, even show quilts. |
I have pinned several from the board. I always ask permission from the original poster first, though. Most are flattered that you like their quilt enough to want to save it for future inspiration. There are some very nice quilts on here!
|
I don't bother to ask... why would anyone object? I figure if they didn't want others to see their quilt, they wouldn't have posted it. When anyone clicks on the picture, it will bring them right back to the original post of the picture on the QB.
|
I agree with Dunster. Once something is posted, it's out there. There is really no expectation of privacy. I've googled a term, or procedure, and many times it leads right back to the QB. I've also been surprised seeing my own quilts, wall hangings or creations on pinterest. When I pin I give credit to the creator if I can.
|
I don't do Pinterest or Facebook but do send photos in emails and noticed once that if i clicked on my photo, i could look at more of mine. scary that happened. so far it's not happened with posts in quilt forums. just watch yourself.
|
It wouldn't bother me at all if someone posted a picture of a quilt I posted. I think it's a compliment!
|
I have also found some of my quilts on other sites, mostly pinterest. I guess I'm also a bit flattered! I agree with Dunster, if you posted it, you put it out there.
|
I don't get too many quilt pictures on this site but I would be honored if someone chose to put my quilts on pinterest. I agree with everyone else that if we put it on this public forum then it is open to what people want to do with the picture. I love pinterest and go there for a lot of inspiration.
|
I'm pleased and complimented when I find one of my own quilts on Pinterest, and as previous posters have said, clicking on the picture leads you right back here. As far as I'm concerned, the more quilts posted on Pinterest, the more ideas are sparked for others and we all win.

I don't bother to ask either. If posted on a public site online, it's accessible to anyone. |

Still, if I post a photo on a specific forum for my online friends to see, that should not make it public domain, but it usually does. Then, I've had people take my photos that were posted to a site that says the photos are owned by the contributor and are not public domain take them anyway and use them on commercial web sites. There's not anything you can do about that either. And I also resent certain sites that "host" personal "work product" of their contributors and then charge others for access to it. That's why my family tree is not on Ancestry. I guess that I'm just a curmudgeon. bkay |
Maureen MJ, I have a "pin it" button that I downloaded from Pinterest that allows me to pin a picture when I click on it.
|
This is the number one reason why I don't post any of my own designs here or on FB. Some sites and forums have sharing and downloading disabled, but they are few and far between. If and when I do post them, they have my name and website watermarked and embedded in the photo.

sometimes I would object.....only because I make many gift quilts and being a board member for many years now when I finish one I like to show it here....knowing the recipient isn’t a member & wont see it. It would upset me if someone here decided to pin it to their public Pinterest or anywhere else without asking- waiting until I have given the gift. I guess if we have members who believe they don’t have to ask- they have the right to take someone else’s work & do as they please with it without checking, those of us who create gifts need to not share them. It’s sad- for years I believed one of the best parts of being here was sharing our work with other Quilters. :( |
When something is pinned to pinterest, it appears there as a link to the source. Thus, no one is posting your actual picture. Just as here on the QB... links to pictures are fine but copying the picture and posting it here is a violation of the creator's rights. We just don't have a 'button' to accomplish that.
|
I'd be honored that someone wanted to pin my quilt. You don't need to ask my permission to do so.
It would be nice for someone to say on my thread where I posted the picture that they liked it enough to pin it. I've seen my quilts on Pinterest before. No one has ever let me know that they did it. I consider that rude, but I don't lose any sleep over it. |
I have seen several things of mine over on Pinterest. I'm fine with that. Most everything I make I got the pattern online for free or it's a tradition block pattern. If the way I've used it inspires them, it makes me happy.
If your not allowed to pin, Pinterest will just delete it from your photos. They will notify you by email. I have had several disappear. Truth be told, I'm such an avid pinner, I don't even know which ones disappear. Obviously, I could live without it. That being said, if you post it online, it gets very public very quick. So, just don't post anything you don't want to share. |

Additionally with many screen grabber tools like snip it or snag it someone can pin a picture that will be linked as "uploaded by user". |
I've been surprised to find my quilts on Pinterest. I think that is really nice.
There are private sites that state in the rules that you are not allowed to take photos from the site, so read the rules of each site. Watson |
I too was flattered to see one of my quilts on Pinterest. It doesn't bother me.
I've pinned things on Pinterest and had them removed by the Pinterest police because of "copyright" so maybe someone complained. Once it was a pin showing a lasagna where the cheese arrangement looked like a skull. I didn't quite understand how that could be a copyright. |
If you have a quilt to be given as a gift don't post a picture of it online until after it's given.
|
I agree with those who feel flattered when someone likes my quilt enough to save/copy it. I create and adapt lots of patterns and am always happy when I find one posted somewhere like Pinterest.
|
Thanks for reminding me this is public domain and legally can be pinned to pinterest or other social network. I'll be more careful what I post in the future.

don't assume. the poster might have a reason you haven't thought of. and remember ... their reason doesn't have to make sense to you. just respect it and don't pin. |
I would not mind. It shows that the person liked it a lot. I think I would like credit though.

So, hypothetically, anytime you "pin" a photo to Pinterest without the owners permission, you could be violating a copyright law. On many websites, if you post your own photo, it either becomes the property of the website or public domain. It's in the terms of service. I understand that if you post your own photo to pinterest, it becomes public domain and anyone can use it any way they choose. That is not true if someone else posts your photo to Pinterest. I think that might get murky if you have photos on your site and also install a pinterest button there as well. |
Whatever you post is out in public. Consider free game for all and no privacy. What something private then don’t post.
|
I have seen several of the quilt pictures I have posted to this board show up elsewhere on the Internet——like in a google search or on Pinterest. Never post anything you don’t want to share anywhere on the internet. When I post a photo here or elsewhere I assume it is on the public domain and could go anywhere.

As far as I can tell, Pinterest pictures contain links back to the source. I don't understand what the problem would be since it would just create extra traffic to your picture, wherever you put it. Maybe I'm missing something?

I had a blog post about a particular quilt block pinned without my knowledge or okay. My blog described the difficulties and woes of making this block - not a tutorial. But someone added a link from their site as a tutorial, and now it's also pinterest forever. I had people contacting me for the pattern/tutorial! I just referenced the original book/author and wished them luck. I was somewhat offended by the person who did the link from their site, but the web is out there - so I guess it's all fair game. I took no credit for the block or book. It was just a record of my adventure in attempting to make it.
The interest is useful for inspiring and guiding - but can be weird when it comes to people taking liberties with your info. So y'all be aware and careful. Blessings, Donna Mc |
just because we see something on the internet we should not consider it "fair game."
copyright laws still apply. so do the principals of personal ethics. yes ... i do know that once i post something i cannot count on everyone who sees it behaving in a lawful or ethical manner. that is the way of the world and has always been. but wrong is wrong and right is right. if you have a conscience, then follow it. if you have no conscience then no advice will change your mind. |
Valid points, PatriceJ. I guess I was thinking of non-copy write protected photos, like my quilt block. Just a picture I took of a block I was working on.
Items that are protected should definitely be respected and treated as the law's protection provides. As far as ethics - I try to 'do unto others' etc and treat everyone with respect....wish the world lived by this simple rule, too. Blessings, Donna Mc |

even if the block is from the public domain, you own the photo and all rights to it. |
Patrice is right. I wouldn't mind but I would want credit for being the owner/maker of it.

There is obviously no consensus on this issue. Perhaps a suggestion....if you post a picture of a quilt, and you don't want it shared, say so. If you are fine with sharing it, say so. If you don't mind but want credit, say so. Seems to be the safest way to make your desire known. I personally don't plan on pinning anyone's quilt based on the discussion, unless I get permission first. I will say however, if you post picture, you have put it out there and take the chance that someone will pin or share it.
