Well, this is what the chart on page 3 says:
2" squares = 1" HST
2 1/2" = 1 1/2
3 1/2 " = 2"
4" - 2 1/2
5" = 3 1/2
6" = 4
7" = 4 1/2
8" = 5"
8 1/2 = 5 1/2
9" = 6
9 1/2" = 6 1/2"
10" = 7

It is the second number x2 - 1" = size of finished blocks
So: I'd say start with a 9 1/2" block.
9 1/2 = 6 1/2
6 1/2 x 2 - 1" = 12 inches SHOULD be your finished block.
Please make a scrap block with waste fabric first!
I have not made these but if your seams are correct your block should be the correct size.
:-D

Be sure and watch the Missouri quilt co tutorial also!

I also am in on the fun. I'll be nice to say each night....oops time is getting away from me...guess I'll go up to my quilt studio now and make my pinwheel. I'm always thought that if you get just a little time in each night....you can get a lot of sewing done.

I would like to start out doing a baby quilt, my daughter is having her second baby in August so I would like to surprise her with a baby quilt. One that would either go for a boy or girl. So how many charm packs would I need to purchase. Thanks

BellaBoo 02-04-2011 09:23 AM

I'll join in the fun. I have so many projects going what's one more to get behind on? LOL

pmintpat 02-04-2011 09:32 AM

I would LOVE to be a part of the Pinwheel Project. It is time for me to get back to quilting. My stash is calling to me. Thanks.

shopaholic97 02-04-2011 09:51 AM

Hi Susie
Count me in. Have never done pinwheels but always wanted to make a quilt with one. Will have to do catch up on weekends.

How lovely! Haven't had a new baby around for quite a while.

For a baby quilt I'd make it 36"x42" and then add at least 6" of border (3" each side" Babies have a habit of growing fast.)
You will be using 5" squares to make 6" pinwheels by the sew around method.
That would be 6 x 7 = 42 pinwheels.
you need 2 5" squares for pinwheels and 2 for background.
You need 84 charms for pinwheels and 84 for background.
If each charm pack has 42 then 2 pkgs for pinwheels and 2 pkgs for backgrounds.
That doesn't leave you any extras for mistakes but that's what they make seam rippers for!
Glad to have you join us.

:-D

I had forgotten all about your tute. Great method. Unfortunately I'm using charms I've collected over the years.

Mariposa 02-04-2011 10:01 AM

I'm in on this one! :) Mine will be 4" finished.

Janice Thompson 02-04-2011 10:29 AM

There was a tutorial on this site (Missouri Quilt Co) that used two 10" squares. You just sew around all four sides with 1/4" seam. Cut X and you end up with 4 approximately 7" half square triangles. Simply arrange into the pinwheel. Approximately 13" block

SewExtremeSeams 02-04-2011 11:04 AM

This looks like it could be fun and encouraging. But, if I don't get off this board for today I am not going to get any quilting in. See ya later ~~~ :-D

dhanke 02-04-2011 11:21 AM

I'm in, I'm going to start this weekend so that I can get a head start, I'm already planning to fall behind! Will we post photos as we go along, or wait until the finale? I'm guessing we can make them any size we choose since they'll be for our own use?

misseva 02-04-2011 12:10 PM

I'm in!!! I've never been one to do a traditional block but I really do love pinwheels.

titute01 02-04-2011 12:20 PM

I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT TOO. :?

Hmmm...the first one didn't work just right...go here for a good tutorial

great tute.....now I'm psyched!!

Alondra 02-04-2011 12:34 PM

I'll try to do this one... just love to make pinwheels. I had a bunch of Halloween charm packs I did that with, and it was a lot of fun. I still haven't put them together into blocks, or even decided quite what I want to do with them, but - hey! - some super idea will strike me soon, I'm sure. <G>

kashu 02-04-2011 12:41 PM

I'm in sounds easy enough and fun and in the end I'll have something. Good idea and thanks for sharing it.

Joeysnana 02-04-2011 12:53 PM

Count me in too! I started making pinwheels from the MSQC video ages ago. They are supposed to be for my little GD, but I sort of lost interest. This is just the impetus I need. Thanks!

grandme26 02-04-2011 01:29 PM

Count me in. As long as I do not have to swap. I use thangles to make HST with and they are great.

SewExtremeSeams 02-04-2011 01:44 PM

OK, I would like to be in this one. I will be taking a short break in March to have my left hip replaced. Guess I will have to make two pinwheels a day til the 11th and start up again when I feel up to sewing again. I pedal with my right foot so maybe I won't be out long. Thanks for hosting this. I love pinwheels.

I will be making pinwheels the way you suggested. Have been wanting to use that method. Why not do them the easiet way?! Sounds good to me. :-D

Great tutorial. Count me in, I am going to use up some layer cake packs I have - so using 10 inch squares

ktmo815 02-04-2011 02:35 PM

sounds good to me

mombeth07 02-04-2011 02:41 PM

OMG! I am new for sure on this quilting deal. I think sometimes what am I in for. I might need a book quilting for dummies. HA!! I did some practice pinwheels to go by and ask my how many time i had to take apart. O well I guess I will learn that way but I did do it.
Thanks, for listening

laurafet 02-04-2011 03:24 PM

I'm in.

susiequilt 02-04-2011 04:00 PM

Welcome all of you!
I made a test block today using the sew around the edge method.
I started with an 8 inch block expecting to end with a 9 1/2" unfinished block. It came out 10" which would make a 9 1/2" finished block. I have no idea why.
I rewatched the video and noticed near the end when she was just finished sewing the block together that she said the block could be 5 1/2" or 6" block depending on the size block you start with. She started with a 5" charm block so I don't know why she didn't know how much the block would measure.

I'm confused now but I will make another over the weekend and see what that measures.
It won't matter to me what size they end up AS LONG AS THEY ARE ALL THE SAME SIZE!

Has anyone else tried a block?
I don't know if the chart is wrong but it must be, it couldn't be me! :-D

gwena 02-04-2011 04:04 PM

Yes, I would love to try. Is there anything special we need, like a pattern? Once we get the78 blocks done, then do each of us decide to make our own quilt and put on this board for display? What is the objective?

I am going to make a test block tomorrow. I am going to use layer cakes. I have one pack and just ordered another. A friend wants a queen size quilt for her bed, so I am using Moda Origins. Figure I will need the 2nd pack. Have some matching yardage for borders and backing. This should be so much fun, as I have never done anything like this before. One a day, huh?

Quilting Nonnie 02-04-2011 04:14 PM

I'm in, for better or worse. There's this little voice in the back of my head asking why in the world do I want to take on another ongoing project. Luckily, I know where the mute button is for that fella!

Any pinwheel pattern you would like to try is OK. There have been a few posted here if you look back.
This is not a swap. You keep your own blocks. It's for motivation and fun! Hopefully we will keep each other on track.
When you are finished, put your blocks together for a wonderful quilt!
You could add borders or not. It's entirely up to you. Pictures anytime are wonderful!
Welcome

Nana2Sew 02-04-2011 04:18 PM

I made a test block........using two 8" squares.
The block is 10".

Ceil 02-04-2011 04:25 PM

I think the formula for each block should be this:
Whatever you block side is subtract .5 then multiply by 1.4 then subtract .5. Maybe someone could see if that works for their block size.
I'm guessing happens as your using the diameter of the original square less the 1/4 inch sewn around all sides, then minus the 1/2 when you sew those diameters (or think of it as the hypotenuse) sewn back together and losing another 1/2 inch.
