Hi. The previously posted pinwheel project by brush&thimble was canceled so I am starting another here.

Swan Song did one on 9 patch blocks and it was so successful we will use (steal) her idea doing pinwheels.

The idea is to make one pinwheel block a day for a certain length of time!
That doesn't sound hard does it?

There is no swapping involved, just make for your own self and come here to encourage others. This is for all quilting levels.

I am only using fabric from my stash for a stash buster quilt but you don't have to do that.

You make your pinwheels anyway you want. I am trying the method where you put blocks on top of each other, sew 1/4" around the outside edge and cut on each diagonal. (X) Then sew the block together and square up the block.

You could also put two blocks together and draw a diagonal line and then sew 1/4" on both sides of the line and cut apart then square up the blocks and sew 4 together to make the block.
5" charm squares would be good.

If we start on Feb 10th and end April 30th we should be able to make 78 blocks. If you need more blocks than that, take more time or occasionally make two a day.

Any one want to join me in making pinwheels?

:-D :-D

I'm in! I've been wanting to do this.

Jennifer22206 02-03-2011 02:45 PM

that sounds fun. I don't know if I can keep up, but I'll try to. Maybe I'll "catch up" on my weeks on the weekends.

granky 02-03-2011 03:07 PM

Think I'll try this one...if my sewing machine gets out of the shop in time...if not, I'll just have to 'catch up'!

cindy4857 02-03-2011 03:15 PM

I'd like to try, I've never made a pin wheel and don't have a pattern for one, you all sound way more experianced than I am, but I'd like to try, So do I find a pinwheel patten or will you be posting it. Sorry it's my first time joining in or quilting with someone.

Iluv2quilt 02-03-2011 03:23 PM

I think this would be a lot of fun and doesn't seem like a ton of work at once. It'll be fun to share with everyone too! Count me in, I have 3 charm packages that should work with this.

I'm so in! I have 20 or so squares sewn but not cut, so this can be my motivation to get on it!

Nana2Sew 02-03-2011 03:39 PM

I love pinwheels.........I'm in!

cindy4857 02-03-2011 03:51 PM

I think even I can do this. I have a box full of 5" squares sooooooooooooooooooo guess I'm set if you all think that is an ok size to use.

susiequilt 02-03-2011 03:59 PM

Nice to see all of you!
:-D

Here are the directions I plan to follow:
Missouri quilt company tutorial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekYpJzHoW6E
I am going to press and starch the blocks first because of the bias edges.

I'll look for something for other methods for you.
:-D

I'm using 5" blocks but anyone can use any size they want.

SherriB 02-03-2011 04:00 PM

I would love to join! Pinwheels are a favorite of mine and I have a huge pile of 1930's fabs that would love to be in another quilt.

I don't think I'm ready for elephant pinwheels yet!
Funny

Post pictures anytime you want. We love pictures!

susiequilt 02-03-2011 04:19 PM

Here's the other way to make pinwheels I mentioned.
http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltbl...heel_quilt.htm
It does call for 4 7/8" blocks and I would use 5" blocks and trim them to 4 1/2" when done that step.

Anyone know of other ways? Post it here.
:-D

Blue's quilting mama 02-03-2011 04:28 PM

Sounds like fun!!

hoppyfrog 02-03-2011 04:28 PM

I'm in too. I make charity quilts and pinwheels always look great. Mine will be scrappy.

Hi MJ. Good to see you again.

isnthatodd 02-03-2011 04:31 PM

I think I will try, but won't start right away. I have Project Linus quilts to assemble(from blocks made by board members :-D ).

I'm in too. I have never done one of these so it should be fun. I'll start looking in my stash.

phatquilts2 02-03-2011 04:38 PM

This is timely, already have some pink & cream print HS triangles pressed and piled up. Dumb ?, will it be breaking the rule if I started sewing this weekend? For without a doubt, I would lag behind some time during a week.

Do have a pack or two of charm squares that I might use.

wyckedquilter 02-03-2011 04:45 PM

I'll try it...might be tough to do on my weeks to work, but I can catch up on my weeks off! :)

No. It's a good idea to get ahead so you could lag behind without feeling you have to drop out.
I just figured that some people might want to buy fabric so I didn't want to start too soon without them.

brushandthimble 02-03-2011 05:11 PM

Thank you Susiequilt for picking this up! I had forgotten about it, and never dreamed I would be this busy.

granky 02-03-2011 05:17 PM

Personally, I'm going to do a scrappy...just have to decide how they are going to be set...and of course, the size....

dkabasketlady 02-03-2011 06:31 PM

Count me in for this one! I did the 9-patch challenge & loved it. In fact, I'm just now getting ready to start hand quilting that quilt.

Jingle 02-03-2011 07:10 PM

I just finished a quilt last Friday that I made with big pinwheels. I saw it on the Missouri Star Quilt site. I didn't use starch and didn't pull them, I'm not afraid of the bias edges. Just don't pull them.

Dani 02-03-2011 08:13 PM

I'm in. I hope I can keep up. this will be fun! I'm using white charm squares I bought on sale at Fabric Depot and scraps. I'm also going to use Missouri's tutorial.

Momofthree 02-03-2011 08:26 PM

Count me in!!

I have a bunch of charm squares that I have for a quilt to make for my sister and just tonight I was trying to think about what pattern I wanted to try. This is it!! Plus it will be done by her b-day, if I stay on track.

Diana Lynne 02-04-2011 02:47 AM

I have never done one but I would love to try as well..It sounds like fun :-)

susiequilt 02-04-2011 02:49 AM

I woke up at 3 am and the first thing to pop in my head was pinwheels! :D
It dawned on me that using 5" squares in the draw the line method would end up with a 9" finished square which I think is perfect for my project.
Using 5" squares with the sew around the edges method, the finished block would be only 6". Not the perfect for me 9" size I was thinking.
I looked up this chart I had seen on here to calculate the finished size block for the sew around method and thought I would share.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-57124-1.htm
If you double the second number in the chart and subtract 1" you get the size of the finished square. (according to my calculations)

Luckily for me, the blocks I am using are 10" right now so if I cut them to 8" instead of 5" my blocks should be my perfect 9"!

As of now, I will be using 8" blocks in the sew around the edge method and making the quilt 9x8 blocks and then maybe a border or two!
All this is subject to change of course!
:-D

Nanjun 02-04-2011 03:32 AM

I would like to try. May not be able to keep up..
Sounds easy.

Nancy Lee 02-04-2011 03:51 AM

I would like to join the project. Have not done this before.
