I like Moda Bella Solids for my quilts. It's the same quality as the Kona cotton but has a softer hand.

I would also use a tone on tone. It could look plain from a distance.
Or you could also use a good muslin.

i use symphony broadcloth from joanns. it also works good on macine embroidering.
