please help me decide layout on triangle quilt

I am improvising the Chopsticks pattern by Jaybird Designs. I had the ruler but not the pattern so guessed at the size of the strips and triangle units. Anyway, I can't decide on a layout. I am truly torn, I like all layouts and just can't decide. DH likes triangles and diamonds but recommended I change around some color placement in the triangles layout. Doesn't like the light floral right under the paisley print in the lower right corner on the last two photos.

Please let me know what you think.

Here is the RANDOM layout

Here is the DIAMOND Grouping layout

And here is the layout with each fabric grouped in TRIANGLES

Wow, that is a tough one. I think I like the random, but they are all great layouts any of them will make a lovely quilt.

MaryMo 12-15-2013 02:45 PM

It will be a beautiful quilt! I do like the high contrast parts the best ... the turquoise/aqua next to the green and orange/peach. The cream-based green/turquoise/orange, the yellow flowered and the cream-based orange/peach print could be rearranged so that there is more contrast in colors. Maybe switching the green and the one just above it (cream-based green/turquoise/orange) or switching the green with the orange/peach based print above the white/turquoise blocks. I hope this makes sense ....

On second thought, I like the middle picture the best! Lots of contrast there.

They are all pretty but I think I like random best. In the groups, unless they worked out perfectly over the whole quilt, it would bug me.

mom-6 12-15-2013 03:01 PM

All are beautiful! Think I like the random best.

Crqltr 12-15-2013 03:18 PM

I would go with random also! Hard to choose!

Evelynquilts 12-15-2013 03:20 PM

I like the ramdom best :)

dunster 12-15-2013 03:23 PM

Another vote for random. It's going to be a pretty quilt.

PaperPrincess 12-15-2013 03:24 PM

I vote for random!

Emma S 12-15-2013 03:26 PM

Much to my own surprise I like the random the best. Anyway you go it is going to be a beautiful quilt.

Lissa 12-15-2013 03:33 PM

another random:)

DogHouseMom 12-15-2013 03:40 PM

Another vote for random, although I do like the diamonds as well.

If you decide on the diamonds - for that light print in the lower right corner ... perhaps if you swap it with the darker yellow print that is center left. Putting the lighter print between two higher contrast diamonds might work.

GailG 12-15-2013 03:47 PM

I really like the second and the last one. Love the colors..
I agree with the person who suggested moving a darker unit in the corner.

hopetoquilt 12-15-2013 04:15 PM

I vote random. the one set of triangles has less contrast and looks like one piece of fabric at first glance (may also be an issue with the picture/computer and look different in person). when it is done randomly, that issue disappears. Love the look of the random one.

redquilter 12-15-2013 04:24 PM

Another vote for random. It's going to be amazing.

Yeah, what she said :)

bjchad 12-15-2013 04:32 PM

Personally I like the diamond one but hey are all wonderful and whatever you choose will be beautiful.

nativetexan 12-15-2013 04:33 PM

I do too, mixing them as in the first pic looks best. Will look lovely what ever way you do it.

nena 12-15-2013 04:35 PM

First one gets my vote.

Diane007 12-15-2013 04:45 PM

I vote random

BeckySt 12-15-2013 04:48 PM

Definitely the random. You did a good job guessing measurements. I have made this quilt and would make it again. I love your fabric choice.

Quilter 65 12-15-2013 04:53 PM

Well, I guess i am in the minority, but I do like the diamonds the best. Guess I am more inclined to controlled scrapiness. Whatever you decide, please share with us.

Betty Fox 12-15-2013 05:04 PM

Random for sure! Beautifulchoice of fabrics!

quiltsRfun 12-15-2013 05:06 PM

I lie the random.

QuiltnNan 12-15-2013 05:07 PM

i like the random layout

CarolynMT 12-15-2013 05:41 PM

Feline, what are your thoughts for the quilting? Is there a particular motif you want to use? There are several different kinds of quilting and the layout might influence what you are going to quilt. What is the use of this quilt? Is where it is going very structured? if so, you might be better with the more defined shapes (triangle/diamond) if the spot where this is going is more "free spirited" then the random one might be the better choice.

I can actually see the different types of motifs I would use to accent the shapes, for the random I would do a smaller triangle design. For the large diamond shapes, I would quilt a motif big enough for each diamond......same as with the large triangle

Now that I am thinking, I would love to try some big quilt motif for each of the diamonds....something dramatic :p Might have to put that on my "to do" list in the future

BeckySt, It was your beautiful chopsticks quilt that inspired me to make mine! That pattern never would have hit my radar if not for your gorgeous example. For those interested, Becky's wowser version is pictured here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t213042.html

I loved how Becky quilted hers and also her fabric selections. I am thinking I may be going more in a direction of Green Fairy's style in my quilting. That solid cream screams to me for some ruler work and intense fill treatments ;)

CarolynMT, you bring up some excellent points. This quilt is intended to be gifted to my supervisor. She is the sole "girl" in a house full of boys! Even the dog is a male. So I wanted something fresh, airy and girly for her. I have never been to her home so I don't know how structured her decor is. She may just opt to keep it in the office with her, as our office gets pretty chilly in the winter time (big old drafty windows in an historic building) and a quilt would be nice to toss over her lap on those brutal sub-zero days. But I want it big enough to use for napping under the sofa at home if she decides that is where she wants to use it. It won't be done for this year's Christmas so I will be gifting it for next year. Gives me plenty of time to decide on quilting designs and even more time to execute. Given everyone's reaction here and the quilting ideas I have for it, I think random will be the way to go. This way I can go with many different motifs and fillers in those triangles but unify it in the sashing bits like Becky did hers.

Thank you everyone for your input to help me make my decision.

RST 12-15-2013 07:07 PM

Random. Love this quilt pattern, and I think your fabrics are a great choice.

Jackie Spencer 12-15-2013 07:17 PM

Love the random setting! Your fabrics are beautiful!

This is what I was thinking....

I really like the random arrangement too.

DOTTYMO 12-16-2013 12:53 AM

I like the large diamonds. Prefer symmetry.

links123 12-16-2013 01:39 AM

Another vote for random.

marymay 12-16-2013 03:45 AM

I vote for the Diamond one.

azwendyg 12-16-2013 03:48 AM

I like the random look with these blocks also.

Retired Fire Chief 12-16-2013 04:30 AM

I think I like the random pattern, when they are in sets of colors it is really pretty but the one bunch of light triangles on the bottom right seems to get lost, like you missed a whole section.

Yooper32 12-16-2013 05:51 AM

Random gets my vote.
