Are these ok to use when piecing? I am buying a box of them for my embroidery machine, but was wondering if they could be used while piecing also. Thanks for anyone who can help me...

KarenR 05-19-2011 09:47 AM

I have used the clear-quilt ones and LOVE them.

I'll be watching this post

franie 05-19-2011 09:50 AM

I use prewound all the time on both the long arm and domestic machine but not on my Feather Weight.

brookemarie19 05-19-2011 09:53 AM

Great to know. I went to metro embroidery and saw it was on sale. Figured this would be the perfect time. Thinking I will get the white and black. I can get 144 of each for $46 after shipping. And when I'm done with the bobbins I can either sell them or PIF on here so that I dont end up with a ton of little plastic bobbins laying around

I just toss mine. They are really hard to wind on the machine as they are smooth on each side. JMHO. Maybe someone has a way of winding them but I don't. Will be watching for opinions.

Candace 05-19-2011 10:16 AM

They're usually polyester thread. I only piece with 100% cotton. It's my preference and the preference of many quilters.

Holice 05-19-2011 10:30 AM

how does the cost of prewound bobbins compare to winding yourself.

lovequilts 05-19-2011 10:55 AM

I have used them for years. in different model machines with no problems. I love they have more thread on them and you don't have to change your bobbin as often. I recently did a piece and had to use matching thread and was frustrated that I had to rewind the bobbin 3 times to do this project. LOVE THEM. Have had my last "gross" for a while and the thread is perfect.

PamB8s 05-19-2011 10:59 AM

I am so excited about this "topic". I just received mine in the mail today. glad to hear opinions.

I looked and for $20 I was getting 12,600 yards of thread, but when I looked up the 60wt embroidery thread to wind myself, it was $8 at the cheapest to get 1100 yards.

I use pre wounds on my Pfaff sewing machine all the time for both piecing and embroidery. But I use just the 100% cotton ones, I did not care for the polyester ones at all. Plus mine come with little cardstock sides so that you just toss them away and don't have a gross of little plastic bobbins to deal with. They do contain about 3 times the normal about of thread on them that we could normally wind ourselves so one goes along way.

Thanks,

I use them all the time. Be careful that you aren't using the prewounds for machine embroidery. The thread on these is a very light weight lingerie thread. I had a really unfortunate experience when I forgot to check what was in my bobbin case before I did my piecing. And, of course, I had an embroidery bobbin in the bobbin case. My seams in completed top actually started to pop apart as I was doing my final press. Bad, bad words fell out of my mouth!!!!

Lilrain 05-19-2011 12:46 PM

I believe there are some specifically for embroidery and others that are cotton for quilters and sewers. I use the 100% cotton and have for years. Love the convenience and they have so much more on them than winding your own, so I can sew so much farther without having to change bobbins

BKrenning 05-19-2011 02:41 PM

I use the "not full" ones from my quilting when I'm piecing. I've used the plastic and the cardboard ones. I like how thin the thread is for piecing because it helps the seams lay flatter. I toss the empties rather than save them. I tried re-winding them but it's too much of a pain. I have extra bobbins for my machines so no point in saving them really unless someone comes up with some artsy use for them. Then I would gladly save them and pass them on.

They do make cotton prewounds. They are harder to find than the poly ones, though.

If they are cotton or poly cotton - you can piece with them. If they are nylon, they are too weak for piecing and are meant for embroidery only.

I'm with you. I love that I can sew for ages without putting in a new bobbin. A friend got me started using them and I also just toss the bobbin when it's done.

watterstide 05-20-2011 02:43 AM

i use the janome prewound bobbins, i get them at the sew and vac shop. i totally love them!

Happy Tails 05-20-2011 02:50 AM

I use Robison-Anton pre-wound polyester bobbins and they're perfect for embroidery. I can do a whole design and not have to worry about the bobbin. Love them

justlooking 05-20-2011 02:53 AM

A lot of good info!

raspberryparade09 05-20-2011 03:22 AM

Thanks for all the info! Can someone give a web site as to where to buy the 60 wt cotton pre-wound bobbins? I'd like to get some - they sound great! One of my biggest pet-peves is to stop sewing to wind a bobbin. I don't know why the manufactures can't make a machine that you can use a full spool of thread for the bottom thread!!

brookemarie19 05-20-2011 03:23 AM

Now that would be interesting to see lol

PattyH 05-20-2011 03:38 AM

I wouldn't use the pre-wound bobbins that are specifically for embroidery. They do make pre-wounds in 100% cotton for piecing. I love them.

CompulsiveQuilter 05-20-2011 03:44 AM

I have an older Viking Quilt Designer and hesitate to use them (you know how picky Viking is about using their own brand of everything!). Anybody out there know about pre-wounds and Viking?

dorisleidheiser 05-20-2011 03:57 AM

I use them all the time. They come with a cardstock on each side of the bobbin. Just take the sides off and use the thread, then toss the whole thing away at the end. I have a Pfaff 75. I usually get 144 in a box, but have lost my source. Where can I get more?

Mamia 05-20-2011 04:37 AM

My 2010- Singer has a bobbin winder. I would have to do more work and take more time to replace the bobbin with a pre wound.
I too use only 100% cotton.

taciage 05-20-2011 05:18 AM

I use Fil-Tec pre-wounds. They are available in cotton and polyester. There are a limited number of neutral colors and the bobbins can be reused, which I do for the times I need specific colors in my bobbin or if I am traveling and don't want to take a spool of thread for binding or hand work, I wind a couple bobbins to carry along...fit into the wallet just fine!

jaciqltznok 05-20-2011 05:22 AM

just be sure you know what size and type of thread they are.
I use the signature cotton and it is about a 50wt thread. I can't imagine sewing without them!
Though I am buying some threads now and making my own in different colors!

Fran Juern 05-20-2011 05:27 AM

You can rewind them if you start a little thread on the bobbin by hand first and it works fine but I usually just buy the box of 144 to save time.

dorisleidheiser 05-20-2011 05:29 AM

where do you get the 144 box?

mocha827 05-20-2011 05:30 AM

I found in my Elna 7300 that the pre-wounds, while great for not having to change so often, were just a hair too small for the bobbin case and made a lot of chatter noise while stitching. It was enough to drive me crazy so now the pre-wounds only go in my embroidery machine. You can go to Superior Threads website and purchase just about any kind of thread on a pre-wound that you want.

BellaBoo 05-20-2011 05:36 AM

Use to be that poly thread was thought to be bad for cotton fabric. The way fabric and thread is made today that no longer is a worry. The name brand thread/fabric companies all agree on that. I use poly thread in my bobbin and love the prewound bobbins. I buy them by the case from Shoppers Rule. I also like the Superior Super Bobs and Frosties. Most of the quality bobbin threads are poly filament. Spun poly isn't as strong. Fil Tec is the manufacturer of most all the pre wound bobbins. I bought a huge cone of bobbin thread from Fil Tec and many times I use it for top and bottom piecing.

The time saved using pre wound bobbins is the main reason I use them.

Happy Linda 05-20-2011 05:53 AM

Thanks for this topic.

Tudey 05-20-2011 05:54 AM

Every year, at the Pacific International Quilt Festival, I go seeking out prewounds because a) they are really a good value (80-92 yds per bobbin!) and b) they are a time saver for me. I buy neutrals because I use them ALOT in my piecing. LOVE prewounds!

patchitpat 05-20-2011 05:58 AM

I have always used prewounds, love them. I toss them after as I dont like to wind my own.
I go to Allstitch to get mine, they are fast shippers and the prices is great.

I use the NEBS prewound bobbins for my Viking SE and they work great.

Justlucy 05-20-2011 06:09 AM

QuiltNnan, my question was to you. Is that photo you are showing a pieced block. I love it. I do mostly piecing on my quilts.
