I use those thing that look like hair clips to keep it turned

Instead of putting the pins sticking out, I put the pins sideways going along the binding edge. I also just pin the side I am working on. There are many ways to join the ends together. Some people sew straight across, some do the 45º join, some fold back the 1/4 in seam allowance and hand stitch it overlaying the other end. There are many good tutorials on the web.

Sharon Schambers glue method works perfectly for me. She has a youtube vido showing the process. No pins used!

That's why I like the Elmer's School Glue. No poking while you're sewing.
Give it a try and I bet you won't go back.

I sew binding to front only use 2-3 pins when I joint the ends, fold over to back side, hand stich binding down, only use 1-2 pins as I get to the corned to help keep it under control as I sew in miter and get around corner

I glue it too. This way I know it is as straight as I can get it :D (mine is never perfectly straight for some reason :D) and then I don't have to keep checking and folding. Before that I used hair clips and that was OK for me too, but I really like gluing now, I take my time gluing and pressing the binding straight and then stitching it down is a breeze.

I use the safety pins when I pin my binding down to stitch it down. They don't prick me and I can quickly stitch the whole thing and then remove them with no blood and less stress.

I'm like you, been using lots of pins, but I'm glad to read all the great replies for other solutions. Thanks for posting this one.

I must be the only one who still pins......never had a problem getting stuck. Maybe i still do it because I raley get a chance to sit and finish the binding all in one sitting.... or I'm too chicken to go pin-less....
