What does everyone do with the quilts they make? I have made several and don't know what to do with them. any suggestions?

vicki reno 05-08-2008 10:55 AM

All but one of the many I have made have been given to family and friends. I kept the 1st one that I made.

bettlove 05-08-2008 10:59 AM

I have covered all my beds, given them as Christmas and Birthday gifts and have some on my couches for lap robes.
Everyone seems to love to get them as gifts.

HarleyBiker 05-08-2008 11:02 AM

yes, I have given most of them away, and haven't had a complaint yet :-) but running out of family and friends..LOL

nanabirdmo 05-08-2008 11:02 AM

i have 7 grand kids and 2 foster grand kids. also i make a baby quilt for each new baby at church. i have kept several for when the grands start getting married. that's just my immediate family.
there are many nursing homes that would love to have hand made lap robes. also children's homes, shelters, veterans.
keep sewing, there are lots of places your beautiful quilts will be most welcome.

2 Doods 05-08-2008 11:03 AM

I have made them as gifts for a specific reason and designed for a specific person. Several were charity quilts and will go to flood victims and a local women's shelter. I have only kept one. It was made to be ours and is in the family room for napping and chilly evenings.

A group in town here donated quilts to the city police, county sheriffs, highway patrol, fire departments, ambulances, and hospitals for little kids in need. Every officer has at least one homemade quilt in the trunk of their car. When they give the quilt away, they call the group and they get another one to them lickety split. When kids are going through a major trauma or crisis, the quilts are a God-send.

vicki reno 05-08-2008 11:16 AM

Here in Raleigh, there are two group homes for women to stay while waiting the birth of their baby. My sunday school classes donated a lot of quilts to them. There is also birth choice and the veterans group and nursing homes. All would be glad to receive quilts.

HarleyBiker 05-08-2008 11:17 AM

Thanks very much for your ideas..don't know why i didn't think of donating them. I'll check around and see what i find in my area...Thanks again for your help :-)

Butterflyspain 05-08-2008 11:19 AM

I read yours with interest CathyM, what a really great idea. All those people do such a fine job I know its not one I could do especially where the kids are involved. Good on ya Elle

Chele 05-08-2008 11:24 AM

HarleyBiker, I'll be your friend! :D :D I adore quilts! :D :D

marty_mo 05-08-2008 11:24 AM

I have given them all away. A couple of wallhangings remain but the full sized quilts are gifted out to friends and family.

Moonpi 05-08-2008 11:42 AM

usually bed quilts are either made for someone or with a charity in mind. My roommate now wants one. Wall and smaller ones are harder to find new homes for.

tlrnhi 05-08-2008 12:16 PM

ALL of mine have been given as gifts. I havent kept any.
Now, if you are having a problem with what to do with your, I'll gladly give you my address and you can send them here. They'll have a great home where they will be taken care of and loved very much. They will do much traveling and will want for nothing. :)

mgshaw 05-08-2008 12:24 PM

Wow, You all make me feel so selfish! I have kept all mine except for the baby quilts( but I have only completed 5 big quilts)

vicki reno 05-08-2008 12:29 PM

Don't feel like that! I have only made a few big quilts. Most of mine are lap quilts and baby quilts.

mgshaw 05-08-2008 12:37 PM

The baby quilts I do get alot of enjoyment out of giving, but boy my big ones after all the time spent in them it would hurt to give them away

There have been a few that I actually cried over when I gave them away. Didn't really want to part with them, but hubby told me that I made them for the person, now I have to give it to them. NO!! I WANT TO KEEP IT!! lol
I do ask them, if they don't want it anymore, would they please give it back to me. The people that I ask this of, they are usually friends and they always tell me yes, but would have to wait until they die. lol

mgshaw 05-08-2008 01:00 PM

I think if I was to give one of my big ones away, I would have to get visitation rights or something!

bettlove 05-08-2008 01:22 PM

I also belong to a group and we make lap robes for the veterans hospital. We deliver over 100 of them every year at Christmas time.

jbsstrawberry 05-08-2008 02:02 PM

Hospice care patients too. It gives comfort to the patient in their last days, and something for the family members to hold and be comforted by when their loved one passes. Nursing homes, Skilled Nursing facilities.

LOL
Well, the one I made for Courtney, I do have visitation to. I just go to her room and snatch it out!

MAXIES2 05-08-2008 02:06 PM

Quite often I try new patterns out and decide that after I have made some of the required blocks that I will not complete a large quilt for some reason or other so I just make it into a small quilt to give to the dogs trust to sell as a car seat or couch quilt for a dog. that way I dont feel overwhelmed with unfinished projects.

Cathy what a very worthwhile cause :D

quiltnana 05-08-2008 03:26 PM

I have made several and still have not kept one. I give as gifts for family weddings, birthdays and baby showers. I also make quilts for the hospital NICU babies and Project Linus. There are always foster kids who would love them. One day I will keep one for myself...lol.

pocoellie 05-08-2008 07:31 PM

Probably 98% of mine are donated, either to be raffled(SPCA), or to foster children. There not heirloom quality, tied versus quilted. I've made one for my husband and I, Christmas theme, it's never been on the bed, two for the granddaughter, the rest have been donated. I am working on one for me, though, right now.

I still have most of my quilts. They're in bags. They need to be cared for properly and I'm not doing that. They'll probably have permanent fold creases.

Making them was such a goal, but what to do with them?

I won't make big quilts anymore. They're way too expensive to give away once they're back from the quilter.

I make big lapquilts (almost twin size) and sleep with them all winter. I pile them on, two, three, four.

Here's one I sleep with every night. It's a panel I sewed borders on. (I loved that fabric.)

tlrnhi 05-08-2008 08:58 PM

That is really pretty!

mary705 05-09-2008 02:16 AM

Mine have all been given to someone, fmily or friends so far. I am working on one for myself though, figured it was my turn.

Extreme Quilter 05-09-2008 05:07 AM

I don't keep any of my quilts. I give all of them away to family, friends and charities. I have made only one quilt for myself: a wall hanging in my dining room. I purposely do not keep any quilts around so that I can have more room for my fabric stash! :)

Extreme Quilter 05-09-2008 05:10 AM

I forgot to mention that I do take photos of each and every quilt I make. It makes it easier to part with some of my "babies" as they make their way out into the world.

treasurelady 05-09-2008 05:36 PM

Over the years I've made many baby quilts and gave them away. I do still have ones made for my children which will be given to their children if they ever have them. Most of the quilts I've completed ( vs. the ones I haven't completed, LOL) I've used. Several I kept were worn completely out ( the pitfall of using cheap fabric). I've only given away quilts to my family. However, I would not mind having 100 quilts on display in my home if I had the stamina, funds and talent to be productive. Am I alone in that feeling?

I agree totally!

marlene 05-09-2008 07:04 PM

I'm just terrible I can't give them away, except the ones for my grand children , each baby born got a quilt - each of my children married got a quilt , then the others I have stored and use each one when I chnge the bedding I switch quilts .

Cathe 05-10-2008 05:49 AM

Usually, I have a reason for making each quilt, but I also make a lot for class samples. Those get sold, most of the time. I have donated some, too. We already have plenty of quilts for all of our beds. We have wallhangings and tablerunner. I don't often get very attached to my quilts, but there are one or two that I made to sell or teach a class and then decided to keep for myself.

bebe 05-10-2008 07:54 AM

Make quilts for charities!! Many group homes, battered womens shelters, hospitals, police and fire departments use quilts. There is also Project Linus, Prayer Quilts and quilts for wounded soiders. Check it out you may find someone near you that wants or needs your quilts.

Are you can send one my way!!! (hehehe)

Sew sew and make many more quilts!!!

Bebe

marlene 05-10-2008 12:47 PM

I would love to give to charities, but since I live so far in the bush here it's 2 1/2 hours to our local small town then out to the city is 4, there is just nothing close by for me. I would love to ever go to a quilting class but again just nothing around. But I think I will try some table runners as Bebe says she does. or I think its Bebe lol new to the computor so I have a hard time to look back on the messages then continue to answer them. ttyl.

marlene 05-10-2008 12:52 PM

8) Oh I'd gladly make you one and send it your way!!! Every thing I do is by post office , around here and even then it's 20 min . there 20 min back just to my main road , then it is one wee tiny room that gives out the mail lol. Gosh there has to be more life than just here were I amm??? No just kidding , I do get to go traveling alot so I get alot while I'm out on a holiday or even just the weekend sh opping. Time to get supper ttyl.

live2teach 05-10-2008 01:12 PM

I give a lot of mine to family and friends. I have kept a few but it seems everytime I make something I always think of someone else and it tends to travel their way. lol.

kathiwit 05-10-2008 01:15 PM

I seem to find homes for all of mine. When I start a new quilt the husband always asks Who is that one for? It never has a home until I am almost done with it then sure enough some family or friend pops up that "Loves" it. I do give lap size and throw size to our local woman's shelter. All my scrappy quilts end up there. and there there is the grandson.. who seems to find a pattern or color he HAS to have.
