I usually cut as I go. Most of the quilts I make are meant for the wall so are generally PP, fused or another contemporary method of construction. So then yes, I cut my strips, but always have more fabric on hand to cut more strips when I need to. I don't include sashing strips in my designs. If I include a border I wait until the pieced area is completed, before deciding on what fabric to use.

I cut everything at once. Sometimes I even cut the borders out at the same time and sometimes I cut the borders after the other pieces are put together.

Oh yea!! I can't seem to get everything ready before I start sewing. I get too excited and want to just jump right in there and sew. I think that is okay. Works for me.

Totally depends on the quilt. If it is a pattern I have made before and am certain of my choices, I go ahead and cut the whole thing. Many times I will cut all the block pieces but wait for the borders and binding.
If it is a new pattern, I will often cut as I need the pieces to make sure all is going well and I like what I am doing.

When you are cutting out the parts to a quilt, do you cut them all out before starting to sew or do you cut some, sew some, cut some more, etc? I have just cut out the parts to the squares of a new quilt and think I will put the squares together before cutting out the sashings. Does anyone else do that? Just curious.....

that is what I do...sashing and borders get wrinkled sometimes if I have them very long.

While in Texas last winter I started a mystery quilt. I thought I'd better cut it all out in case I didn't have enough fabric. Was I glad I cut first, they had not allowed enough of some of the fabrics and I had to buy more. If I had cut and sewn some I would have come back to Michigan short of fabric.

The first one to see if a) I understood the directions and/or b) the instructions were correct (they are sometimes wrong)

I like to make at least four blocks to see if there might be a potential secondary pattern developing - sometimes it's good - sometimes it's 'interesting'

I frequently go by the 'let's see what happens' method of making tops

I agree with you.

Yep, that's how I do it. Cut all the pieces for the blocks and piece them. Sometimes i decide that i don't want sashing after all, so I usually don't cut the sashing until after the blocks are done. I HATE having to cut more fabric for blocks after I start sewing them. I usually cut enough for one or two extras to allow for errors.

This is what I do, often after the blocks are made I realize the sashing or binding fabric just doesn't work with the blocks.

I cut everything but the borders and sashing. I put my blocks together first.

I learned the hard way to make a few blocks to make sure everything fits like it should and I like the color arrangement that I've chosen. TWICE (duh moments) I cut out entire quilts, only to discover that nothing went together on one and that I really didn't like the way the colors went together in the block. I'll never do that again!
