I would like to try to make a disappearing 9 patch but was wondering if anybody has ever made a scrappy one, all the ones I have found seem to have a more uniform colour scheme. I have quite a few bits of flannel that I would like to use (enough of each to make one block) but there are lights & darks. Any suggestions?

ai731 06-05-2009 03:17 PM

I'm no expert - in fact I'm a new quilter, but I've fallen in love with the dissapearing 9-patch pattern and I'm currently working on 2 of them. One of them is fairly uniform, with a limited number of fabrics and with standard 2-colour 9-patch blocks, cut up.

The other one is a mini-quilt (for my quilt guild's challenge) which I made from nine different charm squares, to make a single 9-patch.

I like the one with 9 diferent fabrics *much* better, and that's how I'm going to do them from now on.

So my vote is - go ahead and make a scrappy 9-patch - I bet it will look beautiful!

Here is a link to the D9P using 5" charms:

And I'm thinking about doing a big quilt with just scraps cut into 4" or 5" blocks....

littlehud 06-05-2009 04:37 PM

Wow, I really like the scrappy ones. Maybe even more than the traditional ones.

I love the scrappy ones. I will have to try that soon. I think I will make one for my twin. Our b'day is coming up! We'll be 27 again (haha)

Susy 06-05-2009 05:49 PM

Thanks, that's what I'm going to do, I really think that DP9 is great, looks complicated but isn't really (I say this before I have started one.)

That is exactly right. They look complicated but really isn't. They are a lot of fun too! I used the D9P to make an I Spy quilt.

I cut up scraps into 5 inch squares and made a D9patch with them. It is such a versitile pattern.

sewjoyce 06-06-2009 07:10 AM

Rose Marie -- that's sew pretty!!

amma 06-06-2009 09:44 AM

Ooooh that would be pretty in scraps :D Please post a picture of your quilt, we would all love to see it :D :D :D

Ninnie 06-06-2009 10:17 AM

I think a scrappy would be great, so go for it!!!

Shemjo 06-06-2009 12:23 PM

Go for the scrappy. I am using scraps to makeone. I like it!

Rose Marie 06-07-2009 07:18 AM

Thanks for the compliments sewjoyce and Loretta.
I used 5 inch squares but next time will use 4 inch I think that is the perfect size for that pattern. Scrapier the better also next time.

Rose Marie 06-07-2009 07:28 AM

The picture I posted is with 5 inchs and it is fine. I just think 4 would be better. Use what you have, it will turn out great.

BellaBoo 06-07-2009 07:46 AM

Here is one that is scrappy with hearts. My guild made it this in two work days for a fast raffle quilt and we made the outgoing quild prez one too.

Rose Marie 06-07-2009 07:52 AM

WOW, love the hearts. Great idea for larger squares.

Susy 06-07-2009 02:25 PM

After seeing those pictures I am going to get at it, they are lovely! Maybe that will help me get over my fears of mixing colours & patterns! Thanks

I wish I could remember where I read the following information about the D9patch technique, but it seems like it might add to the discussion.

They said that when you cut the nine patch in half on both of those directions, you have in effect created a patch with a sashing and cornerstone on it.

I may be the only one who needed to be told that was the effect of doing those two cuts on a nine patch, but it really made a difference in my mental picture of the block - - and the possibilities.

I may have control issues which is why I enjoyed that little fact <g> but on the other hand - - I am also fascinated by lava lamps, so ... the simple things really keep me entertained <g>.

Speaking of which! ... I can sit and spend long minutes watching the lava lamps and wave machines ... but a lot less time watching clouds ... I never thought it was strange, but in light of this thought ... it is a bit odd, isn't it?
That seals it! I am just an odd duck! LOL ahhh, well, the world needs odd ducks, too <g>

I make one using about 11 different fat quarters. I loved it.

Susie T 06-09-2009 07:15 AM

I too am making my very first DP9 with black and whites from Marcus. My thought was to insert a jewel batik and my question is where to place it for the most drama?? In the center, as the instructions I read say to place the dark fabrics in an X and the lights in the +. So the center would be cut into (4) 2" pieces creating a nice visual??

My grandaughter is graduating from high school this month and attending college in the fall, with this quilt I hope!

You guys have always been spot on with your ideas and I hope you can give me some dramatic ideas.

Rose Marie 06-09-2009 07:37 AM

If you look closely at the picture I posted you will see the little black squares were the center square. The light fabrics made the cross looking design. The other dark squares stayed the same since they were not cut in half. Only the center square and the light squares were cut in half.
Hope that helps.

Susie T 06-09-2009 07:44 AM

Rose Marie,
That makes perfect sense and just what I was looking for, something that looks a little more clever, creative and intricate. Since I have never worked with black/white as a base, I thought I'd ask.
Thanks for your time and expertise.
Susan

Odd ducks in groups divisible by 2 become even ducks - so surround yourself with at least three more odd ducks and you'll be even. I
volunteer to be one of the three, any more volunteers? :?: :?: :?:

LOL ... they say figures don't lie, but liars figure ... I think your math is a bit fuzzy ... I mean ... furry, uh ... downy? LOL

gcathie 06-09-2009 09:15 PM

Best thing about quilting is there is really no rules.....your idea sounds fantastic.....give it a go....bet it will be great.....:-)

Susie T 06-10-2009 04:32 AM

Thanks for the visual, sashing and cornerstones, helps the creative juices.
Well if you have control issues, you've met your match. I spend so much time choosing fabric, color schemes, placement and planning that making the quilt is a breeze.
thanks for your time,
Susan

Let's see- you are # one, I am
#1 of three more, add two more to us , that is four, divide by 2 = 2 which is an even number.
all to say - it's ok to be odd or even, just share and care and bring joy to others.

Mumzbear 06-11-2009 05:33 AM

I would go for it! I love the disappearing nine patch. I am doing a 3 color and it is so pretty! Beware...they are adicting!

Susie T 06-11-2009 05:49 AM

You guys have been so very helpful and especially encouraging! I always loved the look of the DP9 and am now intrigued with the possibilities! The creative juices are flowing.
On a past topic:
I read a string where the question was about quilting ideas in the most unusual places. I guess you've created a monster because I see quilts in carpets, floor and ceiling tiles, restaurant seats, church ceilings, the Discovery Channel.......

dlf0122quilting 06-11-2009 06:06 AM

I have made a scrappy one for my church Prayer Quilt Ministry and it turned out fine. Sometimes the fabric pieces we get for these projects are small but they work just fine for this. Try one, if you don't like the way it looks, donate it to your local animal shelter for the puppies pens, they on't mind how it looks, just that it is something to snuggle in.

stormatsea45 06-11-2009 06:39 AM

Yes, I have made a small wall quilt scrappy. But I did keep the 4 middle, outside square consistent and also the middle square another same. If that makes any sense! The other blocks were any and everything and I liked the end result. :-) Jan

It's darling. I'm not good with "scrappy" because I obsess with putting the scraps "in order." (I know, I'm not well. ) But I think the pink one is great. I love the D9P. Learned about it on this board. I will make a scrappy one. Of course, I'll probably do something like put all the center squares in solid colors, or something as insane as that.

Sallyjane 06-11-2009 08:36 AM

I made a scrappy doll quilt using the D9P pattern. I'll see if I can find a picture of it. The finished quilt was about 20"x20". I used some minkees and flannels and cotton prints. When it was all done it was rather stiff. I should have skipped the batting.

wraez 06-11-2009 11:05 AM

Wow, all those D9Ps are wonderful. I have been wanting to do one for quite some time. Recently I made some big booboos on an easy 'trip' quilt and decided to 'unsew' the whole thing and plan on using the fabrics for a D9P.

Bella, I really love the heart one that your quild group made....fabulous! What a great idea. Were all the hearts appliqued on after the cuts were made? Or ....? That is a great idea for a block swap in a guild.

thanks ladies for sharing all your photos, they are really exciting and inspiring.

warm quilt hugs, sue

I am in the process of quilting adisappearing nine patch that is truly scrappy. I just picked a piece out of a box and sewed them together. cut them in half and made rows as I picked them up. No planning whatsoever. I think it looks pretty good. I will post a pic when off the frame.

sophie 06-11-2009 03:34 PM

I have made scrappy disappearing nine patch quilts. I have used all kinds of scraps, but find if the middle block on the middle row is darker, it shows up nicely when you cut it and turn the pieces.
