Sure thing. Would love to shop your finds.
yup I would adopt quilts whenever I could
I will try to do that in the next couple of days. The only camera that I have is on this laptop so...I'll do the best that I can. I have to hold it up in front of the camera so I doubt that I will get a full picture of it.

Several years later when Grandma died.....I rescued her prized sewing goodies from the dump. My Uncle called me and asked if I wanted her sewing crap. If so, I had 1 hour to get it or it was going to the dump. I was very upset with his attitude!!!!!! I went and loaded my car with all of her goodies. There was 3 boxes left and I told him I would come back and get them. He said that when I left the rest would go in the pickup for the dump. I tied those boxes on the top of my trunk and took them home. In those boxes was a beautiful Umbrella Girl quilt top, several quilt tops cut and ready to sew. I have shared Grandma's sewing goodies with my family and I still have several cut squares of blocks waiting to be used. |
Great idea. I have yet to see a quilt find at a garage sale.

wish we had yard sales here in UK,
ps What does your Username mean for you?? |
I remember reading an article in a quilt magazine a long time ago about a lady who bought a quilt at a yard sale. She wanted to know about the maker of the quilt. So she went back to the house to ask the lady she bought it from and the lady she bought it from didn’t want to talk about it. She somehow researched the quilt for 3 years and finally discovered that it was made during the civil war by a lady who had 2 sons fighting on different sides of the war. The quilt was made in the 2 colors (grey I think for the Confederacy) and blue (I think) for the Union.
I would! In a heartbeat in good condition tho!

In giving quilts to Goodwill or a second hand store- at least they did not throw them in the trash and they know that someone will buy them and use them, and love them. It gives me such a sad feeling to think one of my quilts may end up in the Goodwill Store or a yardsale some day. I had better start working on my will!
great idea! I'd adopt.:)
I would adopt also.
A friend of our family made beautiful quilt tops but never could afford batting so they remained "just tops". At her funeral services these beautiful quilt tops were all on display. Never completed or not, her family will always treasure her work. I vote all quilts be saved!

Maybe I'll even print up a little adoption certificate to go with each quilt. I think that would be cute. :D

Yes to all of them.

I know it is worth it but I couldn't afford it. It was beautiful! I will have to check out the classifieds...that would be nice heading..."Adopt a quilt". |
Good for you for speaking up. The man was probably so upset about the situation that he didn't realize how much love went into the quilts. I have the first quilt my mother made--started around 1927 and finished in 1964. I often take it out and look at it and remember her telling me that she had started it when she was away from home (Weetsatche TX) working as a domestic. She wasn't able to go back to it until she had finished raising five kids and living a very interesting and sometimes difficult life. It's a Grandmother's Flower Garden.

Wonderful idea!!!

What a wonderful idea! I will also be watching for the chance to adopt one of these quilts.
Cute Idea!
THAT is one of the best ideas I have heard lately!!
I went to an indoor full time flea market today. Didn't see a lot of quilts, but those I did see had what I consider decent prices on them. No one is going to buy one for a doggy mat in the barn.
Well, maybe Paris Hilton, but her doggy lives in her purse anyway! |
Distance would stop me from adopting, but I think it is a great idea.
Well Done |
Yes!! You must live in a great area for old quilts. I never see any in either place I live, but I'm always looking.
I'll be looking for the 'Adopt a Quilt' posts from now on!

Cute idea about the adoption certificates!
I would hope it would be WELCOMED. A quilt top made my grandmother in the early 1940's was barely snatched for me by my cousin in a yard sale a few years ago. If that had been sold for $2, I would have croaked! Is it possible to re-post that rescued quilt so I can see it? Maybe....?
Great story, yes. You can BELIEVE that Grandma is looking down and KNOWS those grandsons have the quilts. Good for you! My mother gave scraps of fabric to our neighbor who did quilting when we were kids and the daughter of that neighbor gave me a quilt top a few years back, when she was about 90, and my son RECOGNIZED some fabric in that top that he had seen in an apron of my mother's, his Grandma Bailey. Isn't that cool? I quilted that quilt top and it is on my bed - I love it. Name of Quilt: Close to My Heart
I'd love to adopt a quilt or find them at flea markets, garage sales, etc. Please post whatever quilts you find. Thanks. Eiltcoq.
I'm open to giving a quilt a good home. This is a cool idea.
