Cottontop 08-11-2011 03:37 PM

Sure thing. Would love to shop your finds.

hmross 08-11-2011 04:08 PM

yup I would adopt quilts whenever I could

LindaM49 08-11-2011 04:47 PM

I will try to do that in the next couple of days. The only camera that I have is on this laptop so...I'll do the best that I can. I have to hold it up in front of the camera so I doubt that I will get a full picture of it.

This story reminds me of when my Grandma and I rescued an elderly ladies sewing goodies from a fire. She had died and her son took all her prized goodies and piled them outside and set them on fire. I told Grandma what he had done and she went over and put out the fire and rescued the goodies. I promised my Grandma that day that her prized sewing goodies would never be treated that way.

Several years later when Grandma died.....I rescued her prized sewing goodies from the dump. My Uncle called me and asked if I wanted her sewing crap. If so, I had 1 hour to get it or it was going to the dump. I was very upset with his attitude!!!!!! I went and loaded my car with all of her goodies. There was 3 boxes left and I told him I would come back and get them. He said that when I left the rest would go in the pickup for the dump. I tied those boxes on the top of my trunk and took them home.

In those boxes was a beautiful Umbrella Girl quilt top, several quilt tops cut and ready to sew. I have shared Grandma's sewing goodies with my family and I still have several cut squares of blocks waiting to be used.

YIKES! How could someone be so cruel? I am so glad you were able to get there in time to get your grandma's stuff. And what a wonderful deed you and she did in saving her neighbors prized possesions. I just don't get what goes on in some people's heads.

Great idea. I have yet to see a quilt find at a garage sale.

sarahelloyd 08-11-2011 05:29 PM

wish we had yard sales here in UK,

ps What does your Username mean for you??

Scrap Happy 08-11-2011 05:46 PM

I remember reading an article in a quilt magazine a long time ago about a lady who bought a quilt at a yard sale. She wanted to know about the maker of the quilt. So she went back to the house to ask the lady she bought it from and the lady she bought it from didn’t want to talk about it. She somehow researched the quilt for 3 years and finally discovered that it was made during the civil war by a lady who had 2 sons fighting on different sides of the war. The quilt was made in the 2 colors (grey I think for the Confederacy) and blue (I think) for the Union.

MJONW 08-11-2011 06:36 PM

I would! In a heartbeat in good condition tho!

My husband is British and I run a daycare, hence the london zoo. lol

In giving quilts to Goodwill or a second hand store- at least they did not throw them in the trash and they know that someone will buy them and use them, and love them. It gives me such a sad feeling to think one of my quilts may end up in the Goodwill Store or a yardsale some day. I had better start working on my will!

BarbaraSue 08-11-2011 08:05 PM

great idea! I'd adopt.:)

madamekelly 08-11-2011 08:09 PM

I would adopt also.

donnalynett 08-11-2011 08:53 PM

A friend of our family made beautiful quilt tops but never could afford batting so they remained "just tops". At her funeral services these beautiful quilt tops were all on display. Never completed or not, her family will always treasure her work. I vote all quilts be saved!

Maybe I'll even print up a little adoption certificate to go with each quilt. I think that would be cute. :D

After you adopt, how about donating it to the homeless shelters, homes for battered women, if not people useful, the local dog pound.

sankay 08-12-2011 05:01 AM

Yes to all of them.

thelondonzoo 08-12-2011 05:31 AM

WOW!!!!! And only for $2. No matter how many yard sales and resale stores I have gone too...I don't find any inexpensive quilts. The quilts I have found in a resale shop...they wanted $75.00
I know it is worth it but I couldn't afford it. It was beautiful!
I will have to check out the classifieds...that would be nice heading..."Adopt a quilt".

ufoqueen 08-12-2011 11:16 AM

Good for you for speaking up. The man was probably so upset about the situation that he didn't realize how much love went into the quilts. I have the first quilt my mother made--started around 1927 and finished in 1964. I often take it out and look at it and remember her telling me that she had started it when she was away from home (Weetsatche TX) working as a domestic. She wasn't able to go back to it until she had finished raising five kids and living a very interesting and sometimes difficult life. It's a Grandmother's Flower Garden.

Beautiful!

Grambi 08-12-2011 04:22 PM

What a wonderful idea! I will also be watching for the chance to adopt one of these quilts.

babygirl8 08-13-2011 05:01 AM

Cute Idea!

betlinsmom 08-13-2011 08:54 AM

THAT is one of the best ideas I have heard lately!!

GrannieAnnie 08-13-2011 10:46 PM

I went to an indoor full time flea market today. Didn't see a lot of quilts, but those I did see had what I consider decent prices on them. No one is going to buy one for a doggy mat in the barn.

Well, maybe Paris Hilton, but her doggy lives in her purse anyway!

pippa45 08-14-2011 03:48 AM

Distance would stop me from adopting, but I think it is a great idea.
Well Done

puck116 08-14-2011 07:14 AM

Yes!! You must live in a great area for old quilts. I never see any in either place I live, but I'm always looking.

rslindiana 08-14-2011 05:30 PM

I'll be looking for the 'Adopt a Quilt' posts from now on!

Look for them on Wednesdays. That'll be my day to post. :)

jrtpetey 08-14-2011 05:58 PM

Cute idea about the adoption certificates!

Grandma Libby 08-15-2011 07:41 AM

I would hope it would be WELCOMED. A quilt top made my grandmother in the early 1940's was barely snatched for me by my cousin in a yard sale a few years ago. If that had been sold for $2, I would have croaked! Is it possible to re-post that rescued quilt so I can see it? Maybe....?

Grandma Libby 08-15-2011 07:46 AM

Great story, yes. You can BELIEVE that Grandma is looking down and KNOWS those grandsons have the quilts. Good for you! My mother gave scraps of fabric to our neighbor who did quilting when we were kids and the daughter of that neighbor gave me a quilt top a few years back, when she was about 90, and my son RECOGNIZED some fabric in that top that he had seen in an apron of my mother's, his Grandma Bailey. Isn't that cool? I quilted that quilt top and it is on my bed - I love it. Name of Quilt: Close to My Heart

eiltcoq 08-16-2011 03:49 AM

I'd love to adopt a quilt or find them at flea markets, garage sales, etc. Please post whatever quilts you find. Thanks. Eiltcoq.

Sienna's GiGi 08-16-2011 04:50 AM

I'm open to giving a quilt a good home. This is a cool idea.
