I spoke with a woman the other day and she told me that she was a quilt master. Didn't get a chance to ask her what that means. How does a person become a quilt master?

valleyquiltermo 10-03-2011 06:35 AM

Very good question, I'd like to know this also. I been piecing and quilting for 26 yrs and still don't consider myself a master. Always learning something new. ;-)

mimom 10-03-2011 06:38 AM

I know another board member who dealt with a master quilter and her long arm service and was very disappointed. I think people give themselves these titles in order to gain respect from newbies. Just my opinion

ejpkam 10-03-2011 06:40 AM

I'm not 100 percent sure , i thought it had something to do with winning so many awards or recognition or being nominated by a quilter society??

hobo2000 10-03-2011 06:49 AM

You can become a "Master Quilter" thru NQA . It is extremely hard to make a quilt that is "Master" quality.

sparkys_mom 10-03-2011 06:50 AM

http://nqaquilts.org/master/

Looks like a "for real" title. I guess like Master Gardeners.

BKrenning 10-03-2011 06:52 AM

Perhaps she said guild master which I would think was an officer in her local guild. Otherwise it would be a title bestowed by the IQS or AQS for teacher, ribbons won or maybe even one of the white glove people.

I recognized a few names on that list. Sharon Schamber is one of them. I didn't have a clue, thanks for sharing.

QuiltE 10-03-2011 06:59 AM

It also could be that she gave herself an honorific title, as we might say about someone who makes cookies, a Cookie Queen!

Anael 10-03-2011 07:02 AM

I've read the program, I guess I never will be a Master Quilter :D

DogHouseMom 10-03-2011 07:11 AM

Did she say "Quilt Master" or "Master Quilter"??

If someone had worked that hard, and had the distinction of having "Master Quilter" bestowed upon them they would not make the mistake of calling themselves a "Quilt Master" as opposed to the correct nomenclature.

If she said "Quilt Master" I highly doubt it is a true "Master Quilter".

QuilterGary 10-03-2011 07:12 AM

I don't see that happening.

Peckish 10-03-2011 07:13 AM

Hmm I've never heard of that. Reminded me of a guy my husband met once, had "B.D.O.P." after his title on his business card. My husband asked him what it meant, he replied that he'd had that title for years and DH was the first to ask about it. It meant Big Dog On Porch. Bwaa haaa haaa!

GGinMcKinney 10-03-2011 07:16 AM

When I was working all day, going to school at night, raising kids and had a DH all while going to college at night, my SIL told me she didnt have to go to school as she had her M.R.S. degree. Yeah, MRS. married. She thinks she is funny. I wasn't impressed at the time I was just tired. Now, I can see it is funny.

Tartan 10-03-2011 07:19 AM

So there really is such a thing. I like what Clint Eastwood would say, "she's a legend in her own mind!" I don't care where the get their desigantion from, it's a snotty thing to drop into a conversation. She ranks right up there with the Quilt Police.

Cagey 10-03-2011 07:23 AM

I pulled up the list from the website and surprise - surprise - her name isn't listed. More investigating.........

valleyquiltermo 10-03-2011 07:34 AM

Well go figure, LOL

Digitizingqueen 10-03-2011 07:37 AM

sounds like delusions of grandure

With as difficult as it looks like master quilter is to obtain it wouldn't be a snotty thing to drop into a conversation at all. It would be something to be proud of.

What is even funnier is that the guy advertised that on his business cards. In my circles to be the big dog on the porch means you can't keep up, you can't compete with the big guys in the field so don't even try. The saying I know is "If you can't run with the big dogs then stay on the porch".

I think it would depend on the context of saying it.

True. But I wouldn't call them snotty and the quilt police without having been in on the conversation.

dunster 10-03-2011 07:53 AM

I'd rather be known as a quilt goddess. ;-)

Years ago I was on a navy base doing training on a system called TTS (Target Tracking System). One of the young sailors asked me if I was the "TTS goddess". It made my day.

wuv2quilt 10-03-2011 08:51 AM

My thoughts exactly!!! Just like the quilt police ...a figment of her imagination.

Only certain titles are really protected. Anyone can call themselves a "nurse" or "lactation consultant" in most states, but "registered nurse" and "IBCLC" (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant" are limited to those who have met certain qualifications. I highly doubt that either "quilt master" or "master quilter" are limited. More likely, "ABC Society Master Quilter" would be. I'm a master laundry-folder, btw, in addition to being a BSN, RNC-OB, IBCLC and a buncha other initials. I was even a DO (kind of doctor) on my paychecks for several months. Shoulda figured out how to make that work for me... Initials can mean something, or nothing at all :)

To me there would be a difference between a quilt master (as in I am my dog's master) and a master quilter. JMHO

Which do you suppose she meant? :)

patricialc 10-03-2011 10:34 AM

Hi! I learned this last year it takes 10,000 hours to become a master at any craft/art.

so...ten years at 1,000 hours a year. (wow I can do simple math )

I bet there are some master quilters here!

MTS 10-03-2011 10:41 AM

Check out the list of quilters to whom the title has already been awarded:
http://nqaquilts.org/master/list.php

As if.

You can Google any of the quilt names to see the quilts.
Most of the makers are already well-known (or their quilts are by sight).

And, even if she didn't mean master quilter but Quilt Master, what a really obnoxious thing to say.

I'm a Fabric Purchaser Master.
One of the very best.

So there.;-)

Yeah who knows what he meant by it. My impression was that he's the big guy standing on the porch barking loudly, presumably at everyone else. My husband said his impression was that the guy was making fun of all the other people who put initials after their name and no one knows - or cares! - what they stand for. lol

It could come up in conversation and if one has that designation it should alert others to the quality of his/her work.

I'd ask for the definition of 'quilt master'. I've never heard of one.

Jennie and Me 10-03-2011 01:58 PM

Since I've never entered a quilt into competition(and probably never will) I'll never be a master quilter.(Sigh!)

nativetexan 10-03-2011 02:16 PM

you should have asked if she was a black belt!!

jitkaau 10-04-2011 03:01 AM

She can't have been serious.

I have to agree...

That looked like the quilts were Master Quilts not master quilters. Probably meaning that the quilts met with all the criteria for being the best quilt for that particular year. I'll never see that one, but after making a lot of quilts I do call myself a "quilter - for the love of it"! Edie
