I just went to Salvation Army today. there was a beautiful home made christmas tablecloth that I got for $4. There must be 3 yards of fabric, one a green ground with sprigs of holly and the other a border of a striped coordinating fabric. No stains. Yay!

I use quilts as tablecloths a lot. Have never had one ruined by using for this purpose. I made them to be used and love how they look on my table. I think you will enjoy the results if you make one (smile).

I am making a tablecloth now from scraps using Tumbler block pattern. Need to work on it actually! lol

I have one on my DR table...we never eat in there...so it never gets dirty.

I have a quilt on the dining room table, & I put a clear plastic
sheet over it. Prevents any spills spoiling the quilt. Got the
clear plastic at Wal Mart severeal years ago.

We eat at our dinning room table every night.
I keep a fabric tablecloth on it all the time, but at dinner time, I whip off the fabric tablecloth and below it is a vinyl tablecloth I keep on 24/7, easy to wipe clean and it protects the table. I have done it that way for 20 years.
Some day I would love to have a quilted tablecloth, and once I do, I'll do it the same way.

So go on, make it, use it, enjoy it.

How about using some clear vinyl over the table to protect the quilt.

Some time ago I saw a photo of a tea room with quilts on all the tables. They either had glass or plexi-glass over the top of the quilt. I remember thinking if something got spilled and ran over the side of the table they would really be in trouble.

I have been wanting to make a round table cloth for my eat in kitchen table. Not sure that I like the idea of a quilted one tho. I like the idea of a piece of glass over it tho. I would use scraps so whatever "happens" to it won't be a big deal. I just don't like what I see in the stores.

I use quilts for tablecloths, backs of couches and chairs, placemats, microwave covers (just laying over the top), etc. There isn't a room in my house that doesn't have a quilt hanging out in it. If you are concerned about splashes and stains, make sure you use a poly bat (so you can wash often) and use busy fabrics. The little splashes will blend in...in between washings!
