quilt as you go
I am trying to find a book or pattern of some sort on a "quilt as you go". I heard about it, but can't find a book on it. I don't know anything on how to make a quilt as you go. Would like to learn how it's made. Can anyone tell me how it's made or where I could find it?

There are quite a few different ways to do QAYG. I Googled and found the following Youtube videos and tutorials (I'm sure there are more):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kArIng_1Nzc http://www.moosequilts.com/RowQuiltSmall.pdf http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.c...go-quilts.html http://www.bomquilts.com/Free-Quilt-...o-Patterns.php If you do a search on "quilt as you go" on Amazon, you will find quite a few books on QAYG along with reviews of the books. |
Google COTTON THEORY.

Fun and done explains it very well on u-tube. She talks about a tool but you could easily do without it.

I tried it and didn't particulary care for it. For one thing, you have to stop your quilting stitches 1" from edge of quilt top. Depending on whether you are machine or hand quilting, this might not work.

I use the method detailed on this website:
http://www.quiltingworks.com/cabin-f...iltasyougo.htm This works for me, and I have made several quilts using this method. The piecing pattern has to be conducive to the design of having 1/2" connecting strips/sashing. With this method, you can quilt to the very edge of the block. The "Lucky Stars" quilt and "Are We There Yet?" that I recently posted on the board and that are shown below were both made using this method. Lucky Stars has 12.5" blocks, and the other one is smaller. For me "quilt as you go" makes the machine quilting manageable. Dayle |
Wow ~ your lucky stars quilt is beautiful. Love the other one, too, but the stars are awesome!
|
Dayle - love your Lucky Stars quilt! I had it in my mind that one could only use this method with strips. Will have to check out the link you posted - thank you!

I have made several QAYG quilts and I love them! I make whatever block whatever size and quilt as desired. Then I put them together with binding. I do most of the binding by machine and the last back seam by hand. I just finished this quilt the other day and it is a generous queen size.

Georgia Bonesteel is the master of QAYG quilts. Her books are classics and are usually found in public libraries. Not many new quilters know about her. Her quilting show on tv was the best of all the quilt shows then and now. Her method is simple and looks like a quilt that has been quilted whole.

also www.quiltville.com has free patterns, some quilt as you go I think. and a book called Quilting in Sections is good and one called Reversible Quilts too. so many out there. try your library too.

Sunnye,
The post I started when I finished the Lucky Stars quilt is this: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...d-t194849.html My avatar is "quilt as you go" also, but is set on point. Dayle |
Great resources! Quilt as you go is something I alternate when making tops. I'm so thankful for the video tutorials!
|
Try searching for the 6 hour quilt on YOUTUBE. It is fast and fun.
|
Do you have a link to teach how the binding technique you used is demonstrated?

How very interesting, I was just over at Amazon looking for a Quilt as you go book.
|
Great idea! I like the idea of using the batting square in place of foundation paper. Great for log cabins and string quilts:) If you put a backing square at the back, you will have a reversible quilt!
The sashing part is a little troublesome though. I will try this one day when I have enough mental strength of handle my scraps. (Edited to add: Oh yes, saw the youtube tutorial on joining blocks without sashing. Cool!) |
Get Cotton Theory book. Also watched a video on one of the sew channels this weekend on this topic and the gal that wrote the books on Cotton Theory was showing how it is done. I think I was on SewOnTV.com channel which I got from this list regarding online sewing shows.

We have had many questions on quilt as you go on this site. Do a search on Quilt as you go.

Jenniky is doing a QAYG challange/tutorial on the board right now. Here is the link

Used to do fun and done. I watched a utube by Kaye Woods on QAYG using a serger. She uses strips and I did also for my first try. Now I use pieced blocks or any other typs of design. WOW it goes fast and easy to bind. Thats all I use now.

YEP It was 6 Hour Quilt.
|
Leah Day also has a good tutorial on QAYG. Google her name - she does the Free Motion Quilt blog.

Just pick a method and try it. I've done 4 different methods so far. The method demonstrated at http://www.quiltingworks.com/cabin-f...ltasyougo3.htm is the same method that Sharon Pederson introduced in her book Reversible Quilts. Most libraries have at least one of her books that shows you how to assemble the finished blocks (and yes, you can quilt right to the edge). Front and the Back
I usually do strip quilt as you go - mostly because I hate finishing work but love the ease that I can quilt smaller sections on my sewing machine. You stop quilting within 1/2 inch of edge. This is my best example. Front and the Back I am a lazy finisher and really only recommend the block by block QATW method for hand quilting. |
All the quilts shown are beautiful.
|
I have not tried this method, but have it bookmarked, because of the 'no sashing needed' idea

Come join us at jenniky's tutorial/challenge. It's ongoing and we are going to explore all the different QAYG techniques as we go along. There is no time line or deadline to complete a certain project. The challenge is to learn as much as possible about QAYG and to try the different methods and be a contributing member of the group with questions and sharing your experiences and photos as you have them.

I took classes on Fun and Done and Cotton Theory. The quilts had a very 'beefy' non flexible feeling. Not like a regular quilt at all. Very puffy and I used thin flannel with the Fun and Done quilt.
|
I have done the one from bayside quilting called fun and done easy and fun no hand sewing

|
How can I get a copy of this pattern with the stars?? I have one of the stars, but not with the border strip and not with QAYG.
|

Could we see a larger pic....maybe one that would enlarge? Did you do it in sections of blocks rather than each block as it doesn't look like each blk is bound. Love it! TIA
Wow! that IS bigger! |
