No I think quilting is here to stay. The younger generation will all get to an age where the gadgets will be boring and they will be looking for something relaxing and creative. Well at least I hope so. :P

as long as there are $$$$$$, i think this industry will survive! Obviously you haven't looked at the membership numbers here, or at the attendance at the big quilt festivals. That would answer your question immediately. And the answer is No. I guess I am drawing from my own environment. I am the only one in a large group of people who sews or quilts and has any appreciation for these skills. I have read the posts and seen the pictures on this site and I know that there are young and old members alike and members are involving their young children, but this is also a specific purpose driven site. |
I don't know where some of you live that are saying they don't have Home Ec anymore in the schools. Around here...well the schools where my grandchildren go...Home Ec still is required in middle school. One of my grandaughters made a pillow and gave it to her mother for Christmas. Her brother made one too. They also made duffle bags. Then when that grandaughter was in 8th grade they did a craft of making lamps out of popsicle sticks. If you didn't know it you would never know they are popsicle sticks. The lamp is gorgeous. Home Ec cooking class inspired my grandaughter so take Culinary Arts her sophmore year...she will be a junior this year. She is an excellent cook and baker. Being in that class just landed her a great part time job in a retirement home...she's been there 3 weeks and is being promoted to assist the dietician.
My other 2 grandchildren...oldest just graduated and will be off to Penn State in August and her brother will be a sophmore. They go to a different school than the other 2 and both of them had sewing in middle school too. So in this area of central PA Home Ec is alive and well. |
it's alive in eastern pa as well linda. the foods and crafts classes we have are always full in the high school. and seventh grade is sewing and eighth grade is cooking. maybe it's a pa thing???

With all the blogs and all the website for quilters, I'd say quilting is doing very well. I have a lot of website in my favorites too and need to remove some before my computer says NO MORE!

I don't know. Right now I'm feeling reassured by the fact that my ten year old granddaughter, who is spending the summer with me, has been working hard on a red, white and blue quilt to donate to a drive for quilts for Vets. I'm very proud of her but, more than that, I've been thrilled by how much she seems to enjoy the work. I also look around at all the young women learning knitting, crochet and embroidery and can't help but believe that handwork is a long way from being dead.

I'm really surprised at the amount of younger women who are quilting now. Seems to me there are more now than a few years ago. I think the only thing that will slow some of us down are the prices for material. I have to buy most of mine on sale as I can't afford the $10 or more per yd.

Quilting has changed since my grandmothers made quilts. The tools we have are great and think quilting will always be around. Like many things the popularity goes up and down but never dies.

NO, I have almost all of my grandchildren learning how to quilt, boys and girls from 5 to 20 years old. And they already have one of my machines picked out as theirs someday. Quilting will live on in our family and I got a late start!
