quilting klutz

Its official! Im now a quilters klutz! Ive always wondered how peple sewed their finger in their machine.... well... i found out! Reaching for a needle and finger wouldn't move! What in the world?? It was stuck! Didnt hurt till I TOOK IT OUT! OuCH! :-)

Emma S 04-17-2013 11:12 AM

Gringe! It hurts just thinking about it. Hope your tetanus shots are up to date. Who realized that quilting was such a dangerous hobby. Seems like if the machine doesn't get you the rotary cutter will. Hope it heals fast.

mary quilting 04-17-2013 11:22 AM

I fell your pain. I did it about a month ago.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 04-17-2013 11:24 AM

I always wondered that, too, until I did it twice in one week. Hurts like crazy, doesn't it?

grandjan 04-17-2013 11:34 AM

Battle scars, I guess. If you sew enough, long enough, you're bound to do that sooner or later. Still, I know it hurts. So sorry.

MamaInRed 04-17-2013 11:39 AM

I cringe when I see posts like this, as I am a huge Klutz.
Hope your finger heals quickly.

wanda lou 04-17-2013 11:56 AM

Ouch.............

susie-susie-susie 04-17-2013 02:39 PM

As I was reading your post and all the answers, my fingers began to hurt. So sorry this happened to you and hope you heal quickly. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date, and keep on sewing--only carefully from now on.
Sue

Welcome to the Club!

pattypurple 04-17-2013 03:31 PM

This is one club that nobody wants to join, but if you sew long enough we'll see you at the meetings. I joined last year. Hope you are back sewing soon. You didn't get blood on the fabric did you?

quilttiger 04-17-2013 04:47 PM

I mentioned in another thread that a needle went right through my finger, including the nail when I was a teenager. Never forgot the lesson to keep my fingers away from the pressure foot area. Instead I use a stilletto, thang or wahtever is handy by the machine.

Peckish 04-17-2013 04:51 PM

Oh great. Now I have to go outside, turn around three times and spit, or I'll end up a member of the club. And I'm not drinking the water, either! ;)

Nammie to 7 04-17-2013 04:55 PM

So far that hasn't happened to me - hope it never does. Can't imagine trying to get my finger out.

DOTTYMO 04-17-2013 10:53 PM

I did the same posted for sympathy in dairies. I had only said that day on here I had heard it was painful. I now know it is and plenty of blood but none on the fabric.

sandy l 04-18-2013 03:07 AM

I joined the club before I became a quilter. Was working on a white satin costume at the time. Luckily I didn't get any blood on it:)

Who would have thought a current tetanus shot is required to be a quilter...... this is why I hand quilt and needle turn appliqué. I am afraid of my machine!:)

Oh, and most importantly, I hope your finger heals quickly!

hope it heals quickly

quilterpurpledog 04-19-2013 04:13 AM

I did this once-many years ago. The funny thing was that my roommate was a vet student and she had no idea how to help me. We disassembled the needle mechanism. Her brother took me to the health center. The nurse took one look and kinda had to laugh and said the needle has to be reversed and she took hold and pulled it back out. Boy, did that hurt. However, I had much to be thankful for. The needle missed my fingernail and the bone. But, I did need a tetnus shot. Thus far, I've never done that again-I remember the pain! Hope you heal soon.

tessagin 04-19-2013 05:10 AM

haven't done that yet but did cut tip of finger with rotary cutter. I sneezed and that's all she wrote. I was able to save the tip and glued it back on. I did have a tetanus shot 2 days before that.

linda faye 04-19-2013 07:19 AM

Been there - done that! Hurts then gets sore! Love the Purple Thang so my fingers now stay far away from the needle. Welcome to the club.

IBQUILTIN 04-19-2013 07:20 AM

I'm so sorry for your owie. Yesterday, I was ripping a seam and the ripper slipped, and I just very carefully puncured a vein. Not sore, didn't really hurt, but Man, I bled everywhere. Today its a tiny tender, but still there. How cautious we must all try to be. Get well soon

Tink's Mom 04-19-2013 07:23 AM

Stinks to join this club! My nail has never grown right since...have it checked out. You don't need an infection.

richardswife 04-19-2013 08:13 AM

Yes it sure does hurt. I did it once while working for Levi's a long time ago. Yep, they sent me to the doc to get a tetanus shot. Stuck twice in the same day.:(

MargeD 04-19-2013 08:42 AM

Been there, done that. I too felt like a klutz, but I am predisposed to be a klutz, so it was inevitable. Hope your feeling better, I feel your pain.

samie 04-19-2013 11:16 AM

I sewed my thumb a couple of years ago. When the xray was taken, the end of the needle was in my thumb still threaded . looked funny, but boy did hurt, had to have surgery to have it taken out.

Gannyrosie 04-19-2013 01:18 PM

Ouch, Oh the battle scares we get and we're suppose to be having fun. Hope it heals soon.

QuiltingHaven 04-19-2013 02:05 PM

Yep, make sure you get your tetanus shot. I had a rotary cutter "incident" on Wednesday this week and am glad to know my blade was "sharp enough" to cut nicely through fabric but not so glad for my my left index finger AND the finger nail. The DH took me to the emergency room - first thing was tetanus shot and second was...well they bandaged it up and said that the partial sliced finger piece couldn't be stitched but it was a "nice clean 1/4" cut" and it will heal and look just slightly strange for a while. Was back quilting today - Aleve helps.

jcrow 04-19-2013 03:23 PM

I haven't sewed my fingers yet (YET means Y.our E.ligible T.oo) but I've sliced my fingers too many times with the rotary cutter and it ain't no fun. I even have the glove and you'd think I'd wear it, but nope...it sits to the left of my cutting table. It even has some of my blood on it from my accidents. I just forget to wear it and then it's too late! Well, I guess it's never too late, right?

My husband works out of town all the time and I think if I sewed my finger I'd go into shock and wouldn't be able to get the needle out and have to call an ambulance. Oh my word! I would be mortified if that happened. I am going to use my Purple Thang for now on. I don't want to take my sewing machine for a ride in an ambulance. I would be so embarrassed! I think the hospital would put me on the 'Psyche Ward' if I showed up with a sewing machine attached to my hand! If someone was with me at home, they could get the needle out while I freaked out. I just know I couldn't remain calm and do it myself!

Luv Quilts and Cats 04-19-2013 03:25 PM

Oh, I do hope your finger is doing better! I just hope that doesn't happen to me because it must hurt!

Raine54RN 04-19-2013 05:43 PM

I did that when I first started sewing. I was 15 or 16, my Mom was at work and I remember panicking! I remember freezing my finger with an ice cube and getting my sister to pull it out of my left index finger. I became a nurse and I still sew! LOL, I still have flash backs when my fingers get to close! Lorraine

MothrNatr 04-19-2013 06:40 PM

After an accident, I found a stiletto very helpful!

Sherryquilts 04-19-2013 07:10 PM

I read your post and then had to rub my finger, the one I sewed thru a couple of years ago... I had always believed that it was just a matter of time before I did it because I have had several close calls thru the years. Hopefully your tetanus shot was up to date AND you got all of the pieces of the needle out!

BarbaraSue 04-19-2013 08:02 PM

It is bound to happen to me yet. I noticed a roughness to my right middle fingernail last week. Took me a few minutes before I realized what it was. I have a needle mark not quite all the way through my nail and a scratch where I moved out of the way before it pierced my skin underneath the nail. Somehow I don't remember it exactly. I remember a pinch. Luckily no blood.
Sorry for your finger. Hope you heal soon.

Sassy08 04-19-2013 08:15 PM

OUCH! I hope it gets better soon!! These posts all brought back a memory from about 45 years ago, when I was in high school. My mom and I were both sewing and I got my finger under the needle. I very strongly shouted the "SH" word. (I grew up in a home where absolutely NO swearing was tolerated.) My precious mother very calmly looked over at me and quietly said, "Lin, is something wrong?". :D Didn't need a tetanus shot--I tended to stay current on those during my growing-up years.

owlvamp 04-19-2013 08:19 PM

Hope your finger is better by now.

QuiltingKrazy 04-20-2013 06:28 AM

I remember visiting my Grandmother at the Navy Tailor shop when I was little. I can't tell you how many she sewed her finger. I can remember wondering HOW in the world do she do that! Well many years later, I did it! Right thru the nail on my pointer finger. OMG! After I got over the intial shock of the pain, I laughed at myself and thought.... So that's how it happens! Sure do miss her!

One of my closest friends sewed through her finger on her longarm. She couldn't reach the power button or the handwheel, and her husband was puttering around in the garage, too far away to hear her yell. She was stuck there for quite a while before he finally found her.

yel 04-20-2013 04:25 PM

been sewing for years and years ...right through the fingernail a week ago
