All my quilts are meant to be used. No show quilts here. And I do it because it relaxes me and makes me happy.
All the above except for "shows."
I won Viewer's Choice one year at a quilt show! That was so thrilling because the quilt did not have perfect piecing, a few gathers in the backing and the binding was not straight. Other quilts in the show were stitched to perfection. I almost didn't enter it but thought I'd like know I had a quilt in a show one time and I was very happy to see it hung in the back out clear view! LOL
Sometimes they're made as a gift with someone specific in mind. Most are made just because I like the fabric or pattern. Then there are scrap quilts that are made just to see what I can do with the leftovers. I haven't even considered entering anything in a quilt show.
I've started quilting because I find it incredibly relaxing. It also gives me something I can do when sitting with the family watching TV, which bores me to tears.
I expect they will ultimately get used, though I have one finished with no home and a second ready for quilting with no planned home. Need to find good homes for them. |
I make quilts for someone to use. They are not to just put away. I also make quilts to see if I can really make one like that, it's a challenge.
For Family and for fun.
A little of all of the above, Except show.

I quilt because I albsolutely must have something to do with my hands - I dont think there is a craft that I have not tried. But at the moment, quilting is the craft of the day.
#1 My mental health
#2 For my enjoyment #3 For my use, how ever that may be Have absolutely no desire to enter quilt shows. Have done my share of winning in other activities so competitiveness no longer enters into it. |
Am I the only one who thinks like this or do all of you? I get great pleasure thinking of my quilts being passed down from one generation to another. Then hopefully many years on my great great great grandchild (hopefully) will fall in love with some of my now, antique quilts and cherish them. I would love to have a crafted article of some type passed on from one of my relatives and perhaps one of my descendants will too!

Quilting, just like my croceting and hand embroidery, is like therapy to me. They are stress relievers. Every quilt I have made, has been a bed quilt, to be used to wrap my loved one in warmth. The time I am working on my quilts, I think of the person I am making it for. It brings me joy to give my "home made with love" quilts to my loved ones.
I make quilts for fun, it's what I like to do. I want them to be used and don't want to spend forever making them. It's a hobby and it's relaxing to spend my time making stuff.
Fun, creativity, learn new skill, warmth, gifts. Not necessarily in that order.
For me, quilting is art mixed with functionality mixed with love mixed with therapy... My quilts will never be shown (except at Show-and-Tell at guild), but the few I've made have been beautiful in the eye of each recipient. It's hard to explain the grip quilting holds on us, isn't it...
I, too, hope that someday my quilts are "discovered" by some great-great-relative of some kind (no grands yet...) and treasured for the love stitched into them. |
I make quilts for daily use and/or decoration; some I keep, many I give as gifts. The creative outlet aspect of quilting is the real reason I keep doing it, though.
l make a quilt for various reasons depending on the quilt l make them for the pure love of creating them and some l sell others go to the family or charity or to put them in a quilt show is great fun. quilting is so restful

I think that I make quilts because I absolutely have to buy fabric. A fabric store to me is like a candy store to some people, they can't resist...one of these two of those half a pound of another. Not to mention the utter joy of giving something of yourself to warm and comfort others.
Often gifts, many for use and decoration, not into showing.

Thank you all for your statements, it is so interesting to read!
I mostly do my quilts for decoration, demonstration objects for my workshops, to enter in shows and - this is the most important thing to me - to keep a traditional craft alive. I am very proud having the talent and the patience to do it and I really hope that they will be passed to the next generations. I don't have children and quilting does not have a longliving tradition here in Germany, but I hope somebody will cherish my work in the future. |
I quilt because my grandmother quilted, my mother quilts and my sisters quilt and because I want to learn well enough to pass it on to my granddaughters. Sitting behind my sewing table and sewing machine takes me to a whole new place where I can think slowly, appreciate if I do something right and try to pat myself on the back!!!! I am in my own little world and I think we all need that once in a while. Sort of like "Calgon, take me away!" I just say "Singer, take me away!" and I am gone!
I love to keep my mind active by planning the next one I am going to work on and at the same time keep what I am doing now separate from the rest. It is my way of keeping a chaotic order in my brain, heart and mind. Seems to work for me. And if it ain't broke, I am not changing it!!!!!!! Edie |
Chanllege of creating...I can't paint a picture but I can on fabric. Making things for specific people who like certain things and then put them into a quilt. But the most fun is sending the quilt off to family and friends without telling them and the surprise when it arrives.

A combination of everything except the quilt shows as I'm not good enough for them, but I do love to attend them.
Dodee |
I'm relatively new to the craft, and I'm not even interested in showing my quilts anywhere   But I make them because Its fun and a great way to express my love for the receipient (wow, that's spelled wrong??) I've finished wall hangings, and am working on a couple bed quilts, one for me :-D and one for my granddaughter. And I'm also in the middle of one my sister wants for the wall in her stairwell..hm seems I've aquired one quilting skill..UFOs  I started this whole thing because it looked like fun, and the really practical side of me says its OK to spend on stuff that will get used. The whole thing just gives me a warm fuzzzy feeling of a connection with the women that have gone before me..I'm thinking of you Mom and Gramma...

Fun, warmth, and decoration.

Quilting is my means to be creative. I love the process of experimenting with color and pattern. Learning new skills and applying history and math to my fabric work pleases me. I make quilts to give them. I still don't have a quilt of my own for my own use. :D
Mine are strictly for everyday use - for babies and young great nieces and nephews and each of my nieces and nephews as they married. I'm in the baby quilt mode right now - lots of babies! I love to quilt and I love to give, and what better way than to give a gift of warmth. The looks of those that receive are precious.
I make mine for use and decoration. I love making tablecloth, runners and wall hangings. My cats love sleeping on them to.
I started this hobby after visiting Amish country and falling in love with the beauty of the quilt. |
I quilt because I love watching the transition from big pieces of fabric, to cut pieces, to blocks to final product. The creative process keeps me interested and I love the warmth and function of the finished product. Can't wait to actually finish one of my own! lol
I always say fabric is my medium. I sew because I love it and enjoy giving them as gifts, though certainly not show quality.
I mainly quilt for my own pleasure. I give some of them away. I showed one, just for fun, in a fair.
I just really really enjoy it.
