most are given away to worthy groups. they arre simple so easy to make and not expensive.
Also for samples for my classes. |
I love to sew and I MUST always be learning something new. Quilting fills both avenues of creativity. I give almost everything as gifts to family. When I get a little better, I will donate to Ronald McDonald House.
All of the above, I guess. I make them for special friends and always for family. I usually make 3 or 4 a month for Llinus. I make them to be given to soldiers in hospital, abd for friends who have soldiers in family. Lately (since I'm getting older) I am trying to make a few really nice ones for us that will be passed down when I die. Sounds silly, maybe, but I treasure some I have made by grandmothers and great grandmothers. Also, for any charity the grand childlren are involved in, like for silent auctions, etc.
Most of mine are justs for fun. And I would always like for the quilts I gift to be used.
ALL THE ABOVE...lol
I started making quilts because they are so beautiful and it's like coloring in a coloring book, you don't see the full picture until you're finished. Now I quilt because I just love doing it and love the joy it gives me to give them to my family members. Plus, the time enjoyed with my little quilt group that I see twice a month.

A little of everything but mostly pure enjoyment and once you get the disease, there is no cure, ha ha. Kim from Upstate New York

I JUST LOVE SEWING AND HANDQUILTING IS MY THING WOULD NEVER MAKE A SHOW BUT FRIENDS AND FAMILY LOVE THEM
I make my quilts for me because I really like pattern and fabric colors. My DD can fight over the quilts after I am dead.
I would never have one good enough to enter into a show. But they are gifted with love and are to be used even if it is a little child who loves it enough to drag it around in the dirt as he/she goes about her/his day.
I make mine to give to my family (children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. That is a part of me that can be shared forever, knowing that I love them. Keeps my sanity, also.
fun, fun, fun!
Mine will never make it in a show, there not perfect. I do it for fun and relaxation. They go to family and friends.

I got started making quilts in 2000. I thought it would be so cool to say that these quilts were made at the "turn of the century". I tell my grandchildren that when they are covered or wrapped up in a quilt that I have made for them it is like getting a hug from MiMi. I enjoy making quilts but it is not relaxing. I have the unique ability to take anything that should be fun and make hard work out of it. I also like to keep a quilt journal. I write about what I am working on and who it is for. Sorry, more than you wanted to know.
Each quilt I make is for a specific person. That way I can pray over it and them. I'm starting with my grandkids, 13 plus 3 step grandkids. (9 done!) Then I will move to the kids (5 all married). Then my husband gets one (and I may work him in somewhere between the others!). I have tied one top that my mom had pieced because of an error in backing fabric for another quilt, so rather than waste it, I put mom's top on it and got it tied, then bought another backing for the quilt I was working on. So Mom's top pieced will be mine, but it's not bound yet. So wonder if I'll be done when all those quilts are done?? LOL!
So I do it for fun, I do it for a purpose, and its time I spend with God in prayer for each person. |
I make quilts for all of the reasons listed. I make some for the fun of it, others to give away, some for babies, some for entries in shows.
For those of you who say your quilts aren't good enough for shows - let me tell you about a friend of mine who said the same thing last year. We were going to the Sewing Expo in Oshkosh Wisconsin and they give away 2 sewing machines every year and to win one, you have to enter something in the quilt show. Well, she did enter a quilt and she won 1st place!!! She was shocked. This was judged by 3 judges mind you. She was very happy. No, she didn't win a sewing machine, I did, but she was floating on cloud 9 for a very long time. It really is fun to enter quilts in small shows. Don't be put off if they are judged. The interesting thing about judged shows - is you get a sheet back telling you at least 3 stong points of your work and then a few things you need to work on. It helps you know where to focus your time and effort on. It is a great learning tool. Not only that, but in some shows you can win either nice money, to support our habit, or a basket full of quilting goodies. |
I am so happy to hear all the quilts are being used. Also that some have had small mistakes, I feel so much better. I make mine for the grand kids (7) each one got one as a baby, then for the first BIG bed, the some were for college, weddings, open house (for a new home) Now we have 3 great grand kids and one on the way....so it starts all over again. I never get a atash, but like to shop for material. I do make some for charity and it makes me feel good.

I make functional quilts that will be used and loved. I am a compulsive crafter/quilter and have always been. I am also one of those that needs to do something for my sanity, so it definitely meets a need in me. Whom I am making the quilt for is important for me. I get great satisfaction knowing the quilts I made are well loved. I also feel a sense that hopefully some of these quilts will outlive me. Anything else I do in life seems so temporary. So I am hoping some quilts will be around for my great grand children. I also enjoy teaching my children or others to quilt. Making donation quilts is also very important to me. I am a busy mama and I can do something even if it is in the middle of the night to give to others.
It allows me to be creative, it also relaxes me. My quilts will never be show or museum quality. They are made with love. I have one on my bed and make them for family.
I quilt because it's fun, but mostly I like to think about how much comfort and sense of being cared about a quilt will bring to someone else. On the news just last night we saw a report of victims of an awful apartment house fire, out in the cold with all their possessions lost, and I turned to my DH and said, "They look like they could use a quilt". Obviously they need a lot more than a quilt now, but they surely could use some comforting too.
I almost never know what I'm going to do with a quilt when I start it. Sometimes people see it and want it so I give it to them. Sometimes it's for a gift. Most of the time I make it because I want to make it. Just for the fun of it.
I make mine to be used. I just want the recipient to snuggle in and feel the love I put into it.
I'm relatively new to quilting (4 years) and have yet to finish a quilt for myself. So far I've done baby quilts for friends/relatives, a house warming quilt, a few table runners as gifts, several bargello wall hangings (all through a class) and a slew of UFO's. My original draw to quilting wasn't to make something for myself, just to create. I'm an art major turned accountant and I was lacking creativity in my life - quilting is a good outlet.
For love of the game & for charity
Daily use ,they are made with love and to be used with love.
I do it just so that the people I love can wrap themselves in warmth and be reminded that they are loved every day.
Lol@ quilt shows. I'll leave that to the pros, who have my undying respect. |
I quilt just for the love of it and it's my stress buster!!
I make em to use not for shows
Sometimes I will make a quilt for a special person, baby, relative. I generally make a quilt because I want to try a new technique, but I just have to love it. Bottom line, even if it is for someone else I do it for me.
So I can free my mind of everything else and just enjoy myself creating something!
I quilt because I love the results. I love creating something from fabric. I am carrying on my Mom and grandma's tradition. I do not do them for shows. I hate it when someone points out the flaws. I do not make quilts to be perfect. They are made with love and to be used.
Always for use and fun. I want friends and family to really enjoy my quilts. Tell them if they wear it out I will make them another . They are washable.
I will most likely make them anther anyways |
Fun and relaxing also to be used.
I used collect fabric to make my own clothes (or so I told myself). I worked in an office and hated what was sold and made my own outfits - more than I could wear in 2 lifetimes. I finally figured out, I just loved fabric!
So, I stopped making clothes and started quilting, cus, well I lived outside of Buffalo, NY and you dont need more of an excuse than that to own lots of quilts! Now, I live in SC inland from the coast an hr and its cold about 2 -3 hrs a yr! LOL, so I dont make heavy quilts, but very thin quilts cus I just cant give up fabrics. I love to design and play w/ color too. Could be why I loved my job - I worked in an art dept where we designed the art customers wanted printed on stuff. sharet |
I have made many quilts, usually know who I will share this one with while I am working on it and I love to see them on the beds, divans or even for nap time just so they are used. No show would bring the enjoyment I get from family and friends who use them. Also they are not picture perfect just good cover.
I quilt because I have to, sometimes I give the quilt as a gift, sometimes I keep it. No matter how many quilts I have ,I still have a deep rooted need to make more, sounds like an illness doesn't it? Quilting is my island of sanity when everything else around me is driving me crazy, I go into my sewing room, shut the door and begin my quilting therapy. I LOVE TO MAKE QUILTS!!
I don't make quilts for show, I make them for all of the other reasons you listed!
