Just love to make them. Most go to Linus as lots of kids need encouragement.

leiladylei54 02-05-2011 09:01 AM

My quilts are usually sewn for fun....once in a while, with a purpose in mind (such as a baby gift) but mostly for fun because I see fabrics that I have found and would love to make a quilt with them.

lucy39 02-05-2011 09:05 AM

As a beginner, I make mine for myself or for charity. I don't feel comfortable giving them as gifts yet.

pollyjvan9 02-05-2011 09:27 AM

I quilt to keep my mind and hands busy. When I'm sad the pretty fabrics lift my spirits, when I'm happy it gives me an outlet to express joy. It makes me feel creative.

therapy. I lost a child and afterwards I just wandered. But I turned to my quilting and for the time I sit with a project, everything is in order, my thoughts are captive and I can accomplish something.

hi, all the reason you said.

Grandma58 02-05-2011 10:03 AM

Some times the simple need to be making something, I get lost in my work and found.

MadP 02-05-2011 10:09 AM

Fun, charity and love to be used.

Ritacarl 02-05-2011 10:15 AM

My first quilt projects was to use up old quilt pieces I got from relatives. I made 17 lap quilts and gave to Nursing homes. Then I made myself my first one. Again using up what I had. I enjoy sewing and found to make clothes for myself was no longer enjoyable. I like the creativity and the challenge of making a quilt. My second quilt was a Christmas quilt. Then I acquired more material from a relative and made a tumbling block. That will be a good summer quilt. I think now I am just going to make tops. I can store easily enough and when time comes to give to someone, I can tie or have it quilted. But mainly I make them so I have something to sew, then to keep busy and be creative.

I quilt for fun, the pleasure of seeing my ideas come to fruition, to use daily, and to see the pleasure it gives my loved ones to receive them.

Quilt for many reasons, it's a gift, because it has to be made and it's my relaxation (most of the time).

Janj 02-05-2011 11:10 AM

Mainly I quilt to make something unique and special for ones I love and want them to have something coming from my heart~not just something store bought...

Does there have to be a purpose?

I quilt just because I quilt.

Scakes 02-05-2011 11:16 AM

I just like to make em. If they turn out nice and someone likes them, they may end up given away. Sometimes I make one with a particular person in mind and use it as a gift.

I make quilts for pleasure and often donate them. My kids already have ones I've made and they are used daily

Beats going to therapy. I don't know if it's cheaper or not but it feels good. I like to go to my quilt room and play. Whether it's actually sewing, rearranging,I find if I rearrange my fabrics from time to time it's like a visit and I find things I forgot I had and wow, this goes with that and before you know it I have a quilt. Cutting up scraps, now that can really be fun. I just need a good storage system for that. And looking at patterns brings a whole new world of creativity and just getting away from it all. My small little world of peace and creativity. katie

Quilting's main function is to hold the layers together. Hopefully, you enjoy the process while you do it.

Heartwarming quilts 02-05-2011 11:33 AM

My hope is for daily use. I make them out of love and feel a peice of my heart goes with the quilt and when used I am thought of (?)

All you ladies are so much fun to read what you say & pics of your quilts & stuff!! I have found that most quilters also love God,gardening & animals. We are a special group. I am working on a 3rd auction quilt for where I work. UAMS has a yearly auction for their cancer research & it thrills me that I have used my talents to make $ for them in doing something I love so much. I have a question of my own, this quilt I am finished with now & would like to hand quilt using a varigated color thread since the back is purple & the top is orange, purple, lime green & black. Any suggestions on brands etc. Is it diffucult to use? Yhans for all your suggestions

mommafank 02-05-2011 12:01 PM

A homemade quilt is a work of love. If I make one as a gift for someone it says I hope you are warm and comfortable. If I make it for me it keeps me warm and reinforces my self confidence. A homemade quilt will be a treasure for each of my daughters after I am gone. A scrappy quilt says that I conserve and am clever enough to make something beautiful from what I happen to have. I think this is why I make quilts. I hand quilt because I want to do it the old fashioned way (maybe to prove to myself that I can) and it keeps my hands occupied. :) :) :)

Most of my quilts are for family and me. I have a large family, I am one of 9. I try to make quilts for my nieces as they turn 21. Made on for my son and some just for my husband and me. Made 2 for Downy quilts for kids. I always have someone to quilt for.

vwquilting 02-05-2011 12:15 PM

I quilt because my great grand mother made quilts that we inhearited and I can not picture a home without one. My great neice lost her Dad 2 years ago when she was 17. Mom and Dad were divorced. He was a great Dad and raised her and her sister. Mom has nothing nice to say about him. We know diffrent. So this xmas I made her a quilt in his honor. SHE WAS THRILLED. iT WAS OF A FAN AND THE WRITING i QUILTED said My Dad My BIGGEST FAN

My quilts would never make a show but they are made to be used and loved by those I make them for. I like it when someone brings one back that needs to be repaired becaused it has been used to death. I have a 22 yr old GD that still has her baby quilt I made her. I had to make a new front but it is still on the quilt rack in her living room and even her freinds grab it when they are in front of the TV and my GD never travels without it.

I will also add that my sewing machine has always been my thereapist.

For me its an obsession. I love to create them and design something that make some of the people I give them to very happy. I know mine will never win ribbons or anything but I hope one day to get good enough that they could. =)

Tussymussy 02-05-2011 12:39 PM

Mine are made with love as I love quilting, colour and the person for whom each one is intended.

firecrackerpam 02-05-2011 12:40 PM

I would say all of the above. I am still learning and would never think I am of show quality, maybe someday. BUT, I am having so much fun and my DH is so supportive.

rfbrazell 02-05-2011 12:47 PM

Mine is a dual purpose. I make them to help others and when they cover up with them, they will have a knowing in their heart they are loved and cared for, and the second purpose is to have a sense of completion, something I started and actually finished. It gives me a sense of worth.

All my life I thought I had no creative skills. Everyone else could draw and was so artistic. Then one day it dawned on me....I am just using a different medium. I am an artist!

judy ramsey 02-05-2011 12:56 PM

Wow Love your chicken pattern Where did you get it [email protected]

Anne P 02-05-2011 01:03 PM

I make quilts to be used and loved. I've made/plan to make baby quilts, table runners, wall hangings, and throws. Someday I'd like to make a queen or king size. I've made them for personal use, friends, and for charity. I do it for the fun and creative outlet, as well.

debbieoh 02-05-2011 01:13 PM

I have made 2 for each of my grand children for when they marry. LOL!! They are 7 and 10. But this way if I'm not around they will still get something from grammy.
made a few for fun. Most of the ones are memory quilts. The hospital gives them to patients who are passing. they write messages on them fto their families. Than when they pass the quilt is given to the family. Can't think of a better reason to make a quilt. my avator is one of those quilts

No reason other than I like the pattern - fabric, don't need a real purpose - it's fun no matter why!

trolleystation 02-05-2011 01:52 PM

Relaxation, using what art talent I have and the satisfaction of giving it to someone.

Floralfab 02-05-2011 02:30 PM
