I was wondering where you all get your quilting stencils if you quilt your items yourself. I am having a very hard time finding stencils.

Or do you make them yourselves?

Thanks for any help!

MamaQuilter 10-21-2011 08:13 AM

I know I saw some at the local quilt shop here. I hope you find some soon. :)

Rose L 10-21-2011 08:15 AM

Well, I got most of mine from various quilt shops in my state, though some are no longer carrying them due to so many people using long arms now or because the shop it's self offers long arm services. There are a lot of online shops that still offer them though, so that's how I purchase them now. Do a Google search for 'Quilt Stencils' and you'll have many shops to choose from.

I'm a satisfied customer of The Stencil Co... go to www.quiltingstencils.com

I ordered and they arrived in a few days.. Tons of stencils from which to choose, too!

kriscraft99 10-21-2011 08:45 AM

I saw some yesterday at our local Hancock Fabrics.

purplemem 10-21-2011 09:19 AM

Hobby Lobby also carries them but I use the stencil co for almost all of mine.

carolaug 10-21-2011 09:33 AM

I went to a Thift store and bought 32 for 20.00...Yoohoo...that was my sweet deal.

My LQS carries some stencils but I bought most of mine from the Stencil Co, as others have mentioned.

My favorite online quilting stencil site is http://www.quiltingcreations.com/

I have ordered from them numerous times and they always come quickly. It does take a long time to look at their whole collection because it is huge! But they have broken it down to handy sections like "feather blocks" "feather borders" "background" "double wedding ring" and stuff like that.

gellybean402 10-21-2011 12:55 PM

http://www.urbanelementz.com/ I have bought pantos from them and they are very friendly.

I think they just stopped selling paper pantos in August. They have gone to digital designs exclusively. I was so disappointed!

I just checked their site...must have been a different company..I will have to go do some checking.

soccertxi 10-21-2011 02:34 PM

It was Intelligent Quilting that went to all digital. I'm SO glad it was not urban elementz. I love their pantos!

Me too!

ecmoore 10-21-2011 05:59 PM

Urban Elementz has a number of their designs available in stencil form.

Aurora 10-22-2011 01:17 AM

I bought some at Amazon.

Caswews 10-22-2011 03:28 AM

I buy some as well as make my own from differnt sources, depending on how lazy I feel !LOL

MaryKatherine 10-22-2011 03:49 AM

I make all of my own stencils. It's just doodling. That way I can customize to any size. Really complex stuff i draw onto tear away or wash away stabilizers and stitch right over them.
Even paper works. I've never had much success with chalk.

I don't know if it will work as i haven't tried it yet but i read in an OLD magazine from my grandmother you can take coloring pages and put them on the machine without thread and sew the design then take a nylon stocking with cornstarch and tap the paper with it to mark the fabric. It sounded pretty easy but i have a pounce pad i will use.....I don't think this would work for fancy designs but may just be the trick for simple ones. I love reading her old work basket magazines from the 40's and 50's

Yep - that's where I get mine!

janeknapp 10-22-2011 05:37 AM

I use commercial ones if they are right for the project and fit.

Otherwise, I make my own with stencil plastic from the Stencil Company and a double-bladed stencil knife (Olfa). I use the Miracle Chalk pounce with the chalk that irons off.

http://quiltingstencils.com/notions.aspx

If I need the stencil for a small quilt, I will make it on paper, stitch it with a size 18 needle without thread and longer stitch length, and pounce it.

acraftee24 10-22-2011 05:38 AM

I found some on e-bay. I know I will find some at the Houston International Quilt Show coming up the first of November.

majormom 10-22-2011 06:10 AM

I get mine from The Stencil Co. at www.quiltingstencils.com They have really got a lot of very nice stencils, and not very expensive either!
Sorry, I don't know how to make the address so that you can just click on it and go there. I'm not computer illiterate, but almost
Oops, didn't see the previous post about The Stencil Co.
sorry

WWW.QUILTINGSTENCILS.COM is a great source for what I can't find at local quilt shops.

prairie_girl 10-22-2011 10:50 AM

Is there a website or video that shows how to use them? Is there something easy to mark the quilts with that washes out easy?

these are continuous line stencils. i love them.

chamby 10-22-2011 12:49 PM

I have a few stencils, However, I have not figured out jet how to mark them correctly. All the marking tooks that see are too large to go into the open spaces.
