quilting supplies from Lowe's!

We have all at one time or another went shopping at Lowe's, Home Depot or the local hardware store for something we could use in the sewing/quilting room right???

well., this weekend, I heard of the NEWEST craze that is at the Hardware stores. I have Lowe's here, so I went online to verify they had this product...sure enough...

It is a Canvas painter's drop cloth. It is available in 8oz or 10oz and in many sizes.
Get this, it is 100% tight woven cotton canvas and the 4' x 5' in the 8oz weight is only.....$6.00!!!!

Do you know that Sharon Schamber recommends using Canvas to cover your ironing surface?

Do you know how many tote bags you can dye, paint, etc out of a canvas this size??..have you priced canvas lately?? Hancock fabrics has a piece that is 30" x 36" for $6.00! By the yard at 48" wide it is $7.00 yd. (I tried Joanns, but their site is down!)

Either way you look at it, this canvas drop cloth is super amazing. I bought one today, in this size, and man...it is super nice!

RUN to Lowe's and check it out!

Wow it sounds like a steal! I'm going to see if my lowes has it. Thanks for the info

klc 11-23-2011 10:49 PM

Very nice. I'm in lowes often.

jaciqltznok 11-23-2011 10:50 PM

I am going back Friday to get a 10oz one, but they are 6' x 9' for about $14.00. I want to see just how THICK/heavy that is. I want to dye it for the bottoms of slippers!

Great Idea my ironing board needs a new cover and of course Lowes is on my list for stops on Black Friday

MaryMo 11-24-2011 12:15 AM

I've used this product to make my own painting canvases ... great idea for ironing board covers and tote bags. A good idea for Friday's shopping. Thanks!

pipp5 11-24-2011 03:59 AM

Already on my list to do. I saw some pillows on someone's blog where they used canvas drop cloths for the fabric and then appliqued on them. Gotta love new pillows!

Great idea. Will have to go to Lowe's although nothing could pry me out of the house on black Friday.

117becca 11-24-2011 04:18 AM

LOL!! I'm like you Karenpatrick.... no way!!! You'll find the canvas in the paint dept - I use the canvas to make outdoor patio curtains.

I know I just said that nothing could pry me out of the house on black Friday, but my Joann flyer just came with the
morning paper!! Step sway from the paper, Karen!! Step away from the paper!!

Interesting information! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been eyeing them and trying to figure out what I needed that for, as I was sure I "needed" at least one of these for something! I had seen something on making totes from them. I bought canvas one year and made fire wood carries for friend and family using the webbed flat stapping for the handles that went all the way around for extra support....Turned out really nice and much appreciated. Lowes is always on my list for something!

bearisgray 11-24-2011 05:35 AM

Good to know - I put a nick in my Big Board cover - which was skimpy anyway - thank you

RenaB 11-24-2011 05:37 AM

Thanks for the heads up!!

JenelTX 11-24-2011 05:42 AM

Very cool! Thank you. A good reminder to check the Black Friday sales at Lowe's and Home Depot so I can get my husband something he'll really love.

Barbm 11-24-2011 05:43 AM

thanks jacqi- you now know there will not be a piece of canvas in a Lowe's within the next 100 miles of me? Kind of like Harbor Freight blades- there will be a run on them. Lucky for you, Lowe's is my favorite store (sorry even more favorite than a quilt shop) and I was going there anyway. Will check this out. I have been using my ironing board with a torn cover for about a year since I didn't know what I wanted to cover it with. Perfect solution- thanks for sharing.

I love going to Lowe's to buy things for my sewing room. Have to admit I hadn't thought of the canvas - thanks for mentioning it. I did buy some plastic guttering to hang on my peg board. It stores the leader grips/yardsticks for my quilt machine. Works great. Who knew they put in a home improvement store just for us quilters!

lizzyq 11-24-2011 06:05 AM

Good information! I'll be heading to Lowe's tomorrow and will check out the canvas.

AprilG 11-24-2011 06:11 AM

Hey, I'm ready to go out at 10:00 tonight. Daughter and I will nap while the guys watch football. Then while they are sleeping off the turkey, we will start Black Friday shopping. I will NOT be out at 4:00 however. No body has anything I want that badly!

cheaha39 11-24-2011 06:30 AM

Thanks for the Lowe's tip, I'll be there friday and will be sure to pick up the painters drop clothes.

WOW this is a super idea! Thanks sooo much for sharing!

Wow! What a GREAT idea!!! Lowes is about 25 miles from me but I wonder what they go for at ACE hardware... I have a 50% off coupon for ACE for Saturday and since I'm going there anyway to buy paint I think I'll give it look. Thanks, Jacqui, for all of your great ideas and helpful input here on the board.

mighty 11-24-2011 07:49 AM

Super idea I will give this a try!!

Don't forget slipcovers! I've used these for a few years and had fund coming up with more projects for it.

Skittl1321 11-24-2011 09:18 AM

My favorite quilting supply from lowe's (or any hardware store) is a T-square. I always use it to square my quilts. Works so much better than a quilter's ruler!

happymrs 11-24-2011 09:57 AM

My DH's second home is Lowe's & unfortunately, I get drug along, alot. Will have to wander around & check this out! I have one of those press on one side, cut on the other side, boards I love, but need to replace the canvas, or just cover it, on the one side, so this would work good. I am wondering if one of these would make a good design wall too, even though I know, the fabric won't stick to it, lol. Will have to check them out, thanks!...

DonnaB 11-24-2011 10:19 AM

Sounds like a great deal, thanks, think I'll get some

Cherylsea 11-24-2011 10:36 AM

I have to go soon anyway and this will make it nicer - thanks for the tip!

soccertxi 11-24-2011 11:55 AM

Sounds like all of you need to check out my favorite blog! http://sewmanyways.blogspot.com/ Check out the 'Tool Time Tuesday'! She uses all sorts of things she scouts out in the hardware store for craft and sewing projects. I just wish I had HALF her imagination!

PS I love this canvas idea! I think i will be making grocery totes. I sure don't like those cheap thin ones. I used 'em, but I'm gonna replace them!

pocoellie 11-24-2011 03:36 PM

Thanks for the great tip, I guess I'll have to order it online, since the closest Lowe's is 100 miles away and I don't have any plans on making that trip.

might just as well order online, they are the same price! and NO hassle of crowds, etc...

Sassylass 11-24-2011 04:45 PM

Thank you so much for the heads up on this!!!

Tartan 11-24-2011 05:04 PM

I bet they would make nice covers to hide the stuff under my sewing room tables. If anyone wants curtains to cover your fabric from sun damage, I bet the canvas would work well. I'm thinking they would make great covers for pet beds too. Thanks for the info!

OOOOHHH..Pet bed covers...that adds another to my list..ehhehe

thinking of making NEW show table covers as well!

Great ideas! I spend quite a lot of time at Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware. My husband is a sawyer and a builder. I love looking at everything in there, have my own tool box and will now add fabric to the things I buy there.

Life is great!

Thank you so very much for sharing this blog with me. Although I did just use up two hours reading it when I could have been quilting.

sharoney 11-24-2011 10:50 PM

Thanks for the info Jacqui - I already had plans to make a newer bigger ironing surface- was gonna buy some canvas!

Ann L 11-25-2011 02:35 AM
