Have seen a few photos of quilts done with more white than usual and am liking them, the white in them combined with the vintage type fabric is very nice. Now I am going to have to pick up some nice quality white fabric. Always getting ideas from the this site!

earlylace 11-14-2010 08:08 AM

also ones with black are very stricking too

hannajo 11-14-2010 08:12 AM

I agree. I feel like I can breathe with these quilts with lots of white.

amma 11-14-2010 08:13 AM

I agree that they make striking and/or very elegant looking quilts :D:D:D

sueisallaboutquilts 11-14-2010 08:15 AM

Oh yes, I agree also!

mcdaniel023 11-14-2010 09:09 AM

Me, too. I want to do a 30's repo with white. Already have the fabric. :)

susiequilt 11-14-2010 11:05 AM

I love to use white, plain or tone on tone.
A good one it you don't want a stark white is Kona Snow.
It's just slightly off white and is great with all fabrics but especially with 30's fabrics.
You can get it at Handcocks of Paducka for $3.98 a yard.

Where can I find solid color fabric either Moda Basics or something similar for a reasonable price....not the whites but colors like reds, turquoise, etc.?

pieces 11-14-2010 12:32 PM

I prefer the tone-on-tone to the solid white fabrics.
They add a lot of interest to the finished block.
Also prefer the off white tone-on-tones for scrappy quilts.

plainpat 11-14-2010 12:38 PM

Joanns has solid colors & lots of on line places too.

I agree! I had never ever owned any white fabric, would never think of using it, never even considered it, until I made a couple baby quilts not too long ago. I had bought a couple yards of "plain old boring" white mainly to embroider quilt labels, and I used a little in some of the baby quilts - - they SPARKLED because of that white in them. Made me look at "plain old boring white" in a whole new way!

I like using white, too. It's very cheery to work on. Here are a few I've done...

I know!! My thing is white with bits of reds here and there. Yummy.

I like using solid whites for a more graphic, modern style.

your avatar is a great example! is the last row of circles applique?

judylg 11-15-2010 04:02 AM

The white quilts are lovely, anxious to try sewing with the white. However, I promised myself I would finish up my ufo's before I even considered a new project.

ktmo815 11-15-2010 04:09 AM

I'm making my daughter's quilt & bordering all the blocks in white - Its coming out beautiful!

mollymct 11-15-2010 04:16 AM

I love white in quilts, too! The first quilt I make for ME is going to have a lot of white. I love how it sets off the colors. They look so clear and the whole quilt so crisp and clean.

calicocat 11-15-2010 04:17 AM

Sounds like your ready to make one!

Shadow 11-15-2010 04:19 AM

I use a lot of white but as for white on white, be careful! The "white-on-white" will turn beige. It has for me!

quiltbuddy 11-15-2010 05:23 AM

I am attracted to quilts that use a solid color or tone on tone in the background. It gives your eyes someplace to rest. I like bed size quilts and they just feel more soothing in the bedroom verses a quilt with everything running into each other. Also, I like the old fashioned abstract quality and vivid designs. This also gives you the opportunity to show off your quilting in the blank areas. I have a bug to do a double wedding ring quilt with batiks in the rings and a dark muslin colored background to replace an older quilt on my bed that is all done in oriental fabric diamonds that has just a white diamond border.

judylg 11-15-2010 05:59 AM

Please feel free to post photos of your quilts with white in them, I love looking at them!

karenfae 11-15-2010 06:10 AM

Buy your white fabric wherever you buy your other fabric. Sometimes combining several whites on whites are beautiful too. If you have scraps combining is a great way to use them up. Some of the greatest quilters do that. You can never go wrong with a white on white background with scraps for your pieces - very vintage looking!!

karenfae 11-15-2010 06:11 AM

I have never had my white on white fabric turn beige and I have been quilting with them for years.

That is a very nice quilt with white in it with your name.

That quilt is my hand pieced hand quilted Dear Jane quilt - I used Kona Cotton Cream for the background pieces - thank you for the compliment!

quiltlin 11-15-2010 06:20 AM

A lady in our guild makes lots of quilts with the 30's repro fabrics and she did one with black fabric and the repro fabrics and it was really beautiful!!!

Merrilin 11-15-2010 07:56 AM

I like using the white on white. it makes the quilt look so pretty. I have used it a lot. And my DH likes it too. He is my sounding board and tech (color) advisor. I like the beige on beige also.

Dianne Lenore 11-15-2010 08:15 AM

How do you think white will hold up? I made a beautiful quilt with a lot of white and wonder if it will be hard to keep nice if it shoud happen to get dirty or if age will affect the white.

Parrothead 11-15-2010 08:40 AM

The 54-40 or fight quilt I am repairing right now has a lot of white 1/2 of the square. Couldn't find any white material so purchased twin sheet from WM for $3. It is 200 thread count and works great. I'm not having any trouble sewing on it. (I hand quilt).

The quilt in my avatar is all pieced. The little bits at the ends were just snippets and leftovers, but embed them in black, and they look cool and graphic.

White looks neat and clean at first, but I just can't get around thinking about how it's going to look after it's been "loved" a while. LOL

I have an old quilt made in 1933 with white for background.
Before understanding the value of such things, it was loved plenty. Still looks good. Needs a new binding. When taken care of when washed they will stay white.
The quilt was made for my dad and later given to me as the last child at home. Sorry no pics.

RST 11-15-2010 12:25 PM

As long as you don't have fabrics bleeding into the whites, I don't have any trouble keeping them looking nice and fresh. Even baby quilts. I think the laundry products available today allow us to keep whites looking good, specially when you work with stable fabrics to start with.

One tip I've learned -- using a pure white batting helps keep your whites looking good. So while I like Warm and Natural for most things, I'll spring for some Warm and White or Quilters Dream when I do a quilt with lots of white.

Taking care of quilts is not exactly something that everyone knows about. If you don't have children and a housebroke partner whether 2 or 4 legged--a quilt with lots of white would be nice. I've seen a number on them.

Our quilting guild here in southeastern TN does a project we simply call "Pizza Boxes". Those that wish to participate may do so. We purchase 2 yards of material and after washing, drying, and pressing we put them in 14" pizza boxes and with the list of the special project members; the boxes are exchanged at every meeting (2x month) without the owner peeking. The idea is that each member makes a 12" block and when all is said and done, have the blocks already done for a top. One of the ladies is wanting a white on white quilt for her daughter. Obviously the 'design' is all important!

mpspeedy 11-15-2010 12:32 PM

I like using white in my quilts. It also gives handquilting in particular a wonderful showcase. I avoid white on white designs as many of them are hard to handquilt through. I just sashed a small quilt entirely in white. The blocks were 9 patches made from a white on white batick and colored batick prints. I purchased the package of about 30 blocks already made from a lady getting out of the quilting hobby. It will make a wonderful Linus quilt.

BizyStitches 11-15-2010 03:08 PM

I personally like more color in a quilt. I use very little white. But good thing we all have different likes. LOL

Dawneda 11-15-2010 04:16 PM

I like black and white just looks so clean & bright.

butterflywing 11-15-2010 05:15 PM

i'm just tired of all those museum-wannabee quilts that use earth tones exclusively. the older quilters used reds, blues, whatever colors they could find to brighten their lives.
the williamsburg look is okay sometimes, but too much of it is boring, imo. i think that's why the pendulum has swung in the other direction. lots of one color against white, or brights on black, like the amish.
