Ugh! These are 2 colors I am really not fond of together but a request has been made of me to make a Purple & Orange quilt. I have no idea what I am gonna do to pull this off! She stated that if I *must* use a 3rd color to use only white. Sooo... any of ya good people out there have any ideas of a pattern to use for this request?
I was thinking DWR might work, as each ring could be shades of purple on one and shades of orange for the other and then a w-o-w for the melons and centers. Would this work, ya think? I really think it's only gonna "work" if the colors were seperated like that instead of together like in a rail fence. I don't wanna use sashing to keep em apart either. I have searched here and all over the net but can't find purple and orange together in a quilt without black(halloween) or just the 2 of them. I suggested a green or yellow based of the color wheel and she said nope, just white but only if you must. gah!! help..???

Those colors could blend quite nicely, though it will be somewhat startling...Only solids, or prints, batiks, etc.????
I saw an amazing wall somewhere in a restaurant in NM years ago that was purple and orange---
Really slapped you in the eye, but gorgeous, like a sunset.
What about a D9P?

oatw13 03-08-2011 04:05 PM

Those are the colors of Clemson University. Any chance she's a fan?

Yeah, that's what I worry about. Don't want it blinding the poor woman!
I really don't know what to do with this request. I have spent a week trying to come up with something and have gotten nowhere. I was thinking pastels or small prints wouldn't be so in-your-face, I don't understand the D9P enough to try it. Maybe I will search some more on that idea as well. Thanks for the input!

Where is Clemson Uni? She is born and raised here in OK so I really don't know if she's a fan or not..?

adyldrop 03-08-2011 04:11 PM

i like the idea of shades with batiks....there are some beautiful "blender" looking batiks in all colors. I'd say to look into that. With a kona cotton white...Mmmmmm sunset....

Jim's Gem 03-08-2011 04:13 PM

I have seen some beautiful quilts with the purples and oranges. They are opposites and so contrast eachother very nicely!!!

adyldrop 03-08-2011 04:13 PM

just to give you color ideas with the batiks...

this one has a bit of a pattern as well...
check out thousandsofbolts.com for good prices on batiks as well...

Thanks so much adyldrop, I love those fabrics!! Never did understand what made a fabric Batik to begin with and still don't quite get it but those are really beautiful. With the variations on them, the pattern really wouldn't matter as the fabric would break up the colors more than enough, I think. I knew this was the place to go for answers!

My grandaughter requested those colors when I was first learning to quilt, not my best work here should have done all the blocks the same but live and learn she loved it! The floral print was actually orange and purple flowers on a cream background I used cream for the sashing and back.

Here's one I did. The pattern is Lucky Stars by Atkinson Designs. Very easy pattern!

I actually discovered batiks myself with my new project. It's for my husband's aunt; her favorite colors are blue and purple. No pink, yellow, or green. But I found some great batiks and a great pattern in one of my magazines. I just need to cut a few setting triangles and then sew my strips together and add a border and then I can sandwich and quilt!!

A D9P would really break up the two colors. A twister would also would be pretty. Might have to use white in the border. I made two and they are not hard to do.

Scissor Queen 03-08-2011 05:06 PM

I have fabric that's purple and orange. Any two color design would work.

ghostrider 03-08-2011 05:08 PM

Purple and orange are great together. Do a Google image search of 'purple and orange quilt' and you'll see some stunning examples. How about a New York Beauty in small scale batiks? Yum!

Fabaddict 03-08-2011 05:15 PM

wish I had a ppicture of the purple and orange one I did. It came out wonderful.

Sadiemae 03-08-2011 05:47 PM

I made a string quilt with purples and oranges for a baby gift. The parents loved it so much it is on the wall.

What about a D9P?

that's exactly what I was thinking. A D9P I think it would be very pretty. You could strip it with white if needed.

PatriceJ has some Suns basetball material.

nativetexan 03-08-2011 06:13 PM

i did a purple, orange and green Robbing Peter to Pay Paul quilt. Orange peel is another name of it.

quilttiludrop 03-08-2011 06:16 PM

Purple and orange are great Fall colors! Purple, orange and green make a triangle on the color wheel (and therefore make a complete color scheme!) A bit of green leaves in a print would be enough to really make the color scheme sparkle! Set with cream and you've got a recipe for a gorgeous quilt!

denise d 03-08-2011 06:45 PM

I recently started an orange and purple quilt.... I also added green and a dark dotted fabric with the three colors also did it in a D9P. I love it! It IS bright, but definitely pretty. :D

I have to assemble the blocks, but sadly it no longer has a home, so it will stay in the UFO pile for a time.

Good luck with the project!

I think the bow tie is great, two colors and so easy, Say white and purple for tie and orange to slash.... actually I think they are great colors. lol, (granddaughter also likes them) IF you didn't want a 3rd color here a person would not need to. I think a better stand out for show... lol

just wanted to add, When doing the Bow Tie you can make the center of bow smaller. (I like it better)

cowpie2 03-08-2011 06:52 PM

A pin wheel pattern would work well with no sashing. I had a request for bright purple and neon green for a teenage girl. It turned out beautiful. Not colors I would use on my own, but I can appreciate the contrast in the finished quilt.

happyscrappy 03-08-2011 07:06 PM

i made a log cabin quilt with mostly plums and melony oranges. dark plums/lighter plums for one square and dark melons/lighter melons for the other square. deep wine for the center. just alternated the squares. it turned out beautiful. i also wasn't too sure on that combination, but i liked it so much, i turned one of my flower gardens into purples and oranges! i do really like it.

Tropical 03-08-2011 10:34 PM

Did she say how purple a purple and how orange an orange? There are many shades of each color and a lighter version of each or of one or the other might look better to you. I hope that made sense. I understand what I meant. lol I hope you find something you can enjoy working with.

nana katie 03-08-2011 10:44 PM

You might suggest that she go to LQS and pick out the fabric she would like in her quilt. She may even pick a 3rd color other than white.

my grandmothers quilt is purple and orange and I love it! Those colors are fabulous together! Here is a pic of her quilt...

Limey 03-09-2011 05:23 AM

Can't remember the name of Judy Howarth's first book but she chooses a whole range of each of two colors and makes HSTs, puts them together in a four-patch and interesting patterns result.

jad1044 03-09-2011 06:02 AM

The pattern that comes to my mind with those two colors, is variations of those two colors and make a log cabin with the one diagonal being the one color and the other half the other color, and then lay it in a design - someone posted one very recently on this site and it was gorgeous. It was of purples and light colors and it zigzagged back and forth in a beautiful design. Wish I'd bookmarked it - and my memory for who the quilter was does not come to mind.

applique 03-09-2011 06:03 AM

The past year or so the batiks have come out with some gorgeous orange prints. I've been busy buying them. I bet they would look great with the right shades of purple. The best purple batiks were out several years back but the 1895 Hoffman batiks (blenders) have quite a bit of color choice and are often cheaper than those with patterns.

CarrieAnne 03-09-2011 06:12 AM

I love the pictures, and I think batiks would look really nice!!!!!!!!

My son loves orange. I did a Trip Around The World for him.I collected shades of orange for about a year. I did not like orange at the out set. By the time I was done I had a new attitude toward orange. I did another one color quilt later, it really is a great study. Orange and purple from light to dark in a trip around the world or a bagello type quilt could be quite stunning.I could not figure out how to add a picture to this quick reply box )-: guess that's my new study.
