Recommend pattern for unique fabric sqaures (6")

I have 48, 6" squares of a very unique batik, 3 of each pattern that are very bold colors with lots of black. There will be no more of this Bold on Bold batik. I need a simple quilt that highlights the fabric square without cutting it up further. Black fabric could be used for sashing, but I don't want this quilt to be boring same thing over and over. I want to pay tribute to the makers of the batik in the quilt. I can't think of a pattern. Any suggestions, please? I would buy a pattern if necessary.
Thank you,
Linda

Oh, a picture would be great. The fabric sounds wonderful.

I would do something in stars or HSTs if you don't want boring repetitive squares. Maybe the "All Stars" pattern at the Moda Bake Shop. There are a lot of good ideas there and they're free.

Warm Wishes could be adjusted to the size of your squares and would be lovely. There is a free pattern out there.

Here is a design using oriental fabric that might work for you.
I can send your directions as this is a design I created.

Missouri quilt company has a video about taking squares and making 2 cuts with a flip and sew inbetween Its for 10 inch blocks but I bet it would work well with a little adjustment for the difference. It makes a sort of double nine patch and would preserve the integrity of the fabric a good bit. I also like the one posted above. Show us the fabrics if you can Best stitches

pinwheels come to mind

Many of us are visual thinkers, and it sure would be nice to see the fabrics to come up with some ideas.

A few that come to mind ...
D9P
Boxed Squares
BQ, BQ2, BQ3
TATW
Sawtooth Stars
Square in a Square
Square in a Square in a Square

Hobo ... great quilt and very effective way to showcase those fabrics!

Perfect idea for me! I have some fabric I didn't want to cut either and this is what I need to do. Thanks for showing us all your pretty quilt!

Hobo2000,

Your quilt is stunning! Can you give the dimensions or proportions of the focus fabric, shadow, and sashing?

Thanks!

Dayle

Tashana, This looks absolutely fabulous, but I was trying to think of something outside the grid. Thank you for sharing such a fantastic quilt.

Holice, this is terrific- I think it is what I am looking for. I did post the fabric. Could I get the directions? I could give you my email if that is easier. Thank you, thank you!

Thanks for sharing your pics ... you have been given many great suggestions that will be perfect with those fabrics.

Sometimes simplicity is better ... than getting too far outside the grid!

Check out Black Cat Creations Big Block Quilt Pattern. I have no affiliation with this company, just love the pattern and think it would be perfect for your fabrics.

sparkys_mom 07-27-2012 05:34 AM

The fabric is beautiful!! I think the shadow squares would really set it off!

If you can't figure out what to do or don't want to cut them.....then send them to me......ha
But you have given me an idea for a class using up a lot of various batiks I have.

roserips 07-27-2012 06:22 AM

I love your fabric, what ever pattern you pick it will be beautiful. I really like the shadowed squares it gives such nice dimensionality to your quilt.

hisgrace 07-27-2012 08:09 AM

No suggestions from me - I'm very much a newbie at this! Just wanted to comment on how absolutely stunning those fabrics are, and what wonderful suggestions are already here!!

Sewbeeit2 07-27-2012 08:59 AM

Could be fun setting thm on point and smashing with a bright color. Have fun with batiks

Holice 07-27-2012 09:07 AM

I will search for the directions for the red oriental quilt and can post here or email if you prefer.

This is beautiful! And it sure does show off the fabric squares. I assume I know how it's done....or anyway, the way I would do it. Is the shadow created by strips sewn to small blocks of the sashing fabric?

ellifour 07-27-2012 01:43 PM

i like the Black Cat Creations Big Block Quilt Pattern, I like the way it takes the eyes around the quilt and what a nice way to show case the unique batik fabircs .

FabrikQueen 07-27-2012 03:41 PM

I would suggest checking out a quilt pattern by Maple Island Quilts called BQ. It uses 6-1/2" squares. Look it up on line under BQ Quilt. I made one from my Kona Bay Asian Fabrics and it was beautiful. If you decide on that pattern and need any help PM me and I'll do what I can to help.

ube quilting 07-27-2012 03:46 PM

I really like that shadow box idea and that reminded me of the attic window which would also highlight each fabric. I really am partial to the shadow box. Just wonderful!

peace

I love the shadow quilt but for a change you could do it on point.

I really like Tashan's quilt. I have the same situation, tons of squares, each one a different print, that I actually put borders around in different polka dot prints but then what to do with all of them?? Each color of polka dots has 24 squares. I think if I put a black border around them like Tashan did, I will have a beautiful, quirky, quilt.

huntersgrammie 07-28-2012 03:29 AM

i love this were can i find the pattern for it. thanks

If you do add black borders, I would either use a solid bright around the square first, thicker, then the black, thinner, or I would use a black that is not solid- some tonal or pattern in it so the blocks integrate with the quilt.
