I need some advice on rotary cutters because the Fiskers i've been using just isnt cutting it (no pun intended..lol) I've gone through 3 in the last 6 mths. The nut and screw seem to not stay tight after using for a mth or so. Then the blade wobbles...very frustrating and i'm recovering from hand surgery so something maybe ergonmically correct might be better but not to much money?? Any suggestions would be Great!! Thank you in advance :D

laureneberhard 11-23-2010 10:39 AM

Make sure that you have the parts put together correctly. I know once I had two parts switched and had all kinds of issues. I use a 45mm OLFA and haven't had any problems with it.

Sadiemae 11-23-2010 10:43 AM

I use Olfa rotary cutters. When JoAnn Fabrics has them half price it really helps.

Thanks i think i may go there friday morning!

Always Quilting put this on a few weeks ago. Fiskars goes on the same way. I had all mine on wrong. Once I fixed them, they "olfa and fiskars" work very nicely.

I saw this cutter recently... It is supposed to be more "ergomonic". What do you all think? Anyone have experience with one of theses? http://www.quiltbug.com/notions/martelli.htm (updated post, I found it again)

Martelli

Murphy 11-23-2010 11:10 AM

I use Fisker and have had no problem. But, do be sure that everything is on correctly. It does loosen now and then if I am in "full production mode", but I just check it to be sure all is well.

no1jan 11-23-2010 11:42 AM

I haven't tried this cutter, but go to their shop (Quiltbug). The people that run it are wonderful and they use and test the products they sell.

I will have to run out there after Thanksgiving and ask them to give me a try at it though.

They have even let me try products and told me to buy it at Joann's because it would be cheaper with their (Joann's) coupon than it would be at their shop. Now that is customer service!

You know they are guarantee for life send them back to the company Fiskar.

kajaza 11-23-2010 11:52 AM

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I will def. research some of those names and look into the guarentee for fiskers! Happy Thanksgiving to all :D

mysippycup2 11-23-2010 11:59 AM

Yes, I have this cutter. It works great once you get used to it. I use it for my Alto's Quilt cut and it works awesome.

There have been both positive and negative comments on this, so you really would have to try it to know.

I like my Olfas because I can use them left or right handed and don't have to change anything.

ckcowl 11-23-2010 02:20 PM

check out the Clotilde's web site, they offer a number of different cutters by different companies and have 2 or 3 different ergo ones, their prices are not bad and they do have sales and specials.

These are a bit pricey and are wonderful but tend to break their little spring real fast. Seems to be an issue with them. Hopefully they are resolving it or have.

kathyquilter34 11-23-2010 06:15 PM

I have used the Martelli ergomonic cutter for over 3 yrs..it is great..any 45 blade will fit..but the Martelle blade last so much longer..I am a lefty..several of my quilting friends have bought the cutter after using mine..I got mine from Hittle Company..Kathleen

I use Olfa rotary cutter and Harbor Freight blades (ifyou can find them anymore). Harbor Freight rotary blades work marvelously. Edie

quilterken 11-24-2010 02:27 AM

Sometimes the blades cuts into the bolt on the Fiskars cutter and then it stops the blade from turning. I was a huge Fiskars fan for many years, but after three Fiskars cutters died for various reasons, i switched to Olfa. I have 6 different cutters now and can't complain about any of them.

eparys 11-24-2010 02:49 AM

I have 4 Olfas - 2/45, 1/60 and the tiny one (which is too small for anything). I use the 45's the most and really love them. I have tried the Martelli cutter. It is wonderful to hold and use but as my others work just fine I will hold off purchasing #5!!

Juliebelle 11-24-2010 04:20 AM

Make sure that the parts on put back on correctly, I had that issue too and had to re do everything and then no problems

Central Ohio Quilter 11-24-2010 06:45 AM

I splurged on one of these Ginghers a couple years ago at JoAnn's when they were 50% off + an extra 20% off.

I love it, love it, love it!!!!! It is weighted and just feels good in my hand.

AliKat 11-24-2010 08:14 AM

I literally haven't had a rotary cutter problem because of the rotary cutter. I did once put in the blade wrong for one of the brands.

Yes, many of my friends absolutely love the Martelli ergomatic rotary cutter. I can't use it as effectively because the arthritis is in my fingers. Darn.

The Ginghers are too weighty for me to use. So, I stick with my Fiskars and the squeeze of type of Olfa cutters

I guess it is which one fits and works well with you.

ali.

If you go online to the fiskars site, you can download, or fill out online the problem with your rotary cutter, take a photo, and submit to them. They will send you a new rotary cutter. I had to do the same not too long ago. They stand by their product, and it is warrented for as long as you own your cutter

Mariposa 11-24-2010 09:11 AM

I use Olfa cutters. The plain straight-handled ones. Love them!

Melinda in Tulsa 11-24-2010 12:36 PM

I've been using the same 45 mm Olfa cutter since the mid 90's and it's still going strong. Now the blades are a different story. Seems like each package, I get less and less usage from the blades.

If you can go there today, Wednesday, November 24 they are "buy one, get one free." So it equates to beinng half off.
I just bought two packs of blades.

mollymct 11-24-2010 01:26 PM

I have a Fiskar's rotary cutter and it's fine, but my Olfa is more comfortable.

quiltaroni 11-24-2010 01:33 PM

I use a Kai cutter that I have had for 15 years.I do have a new Grace cutter that I am getting used to and like so far.

I would love to have gone today but the closest one is and hour or so away :(

Spudgm 11-24-2010 01:41 PM

I have several Olfa's and really like them. I have a 45 mm one that I bought when they first came out and became popular, it still works great.

luvrazz 11-24-2010 04:21 PM

I was at Joanns on Sunday and they had rotary blades buy one get one free. As I was checking out I thought I might as well buy them so I said to the clerk give me the ones that are on that rack (the price said $12.99) so she said OK and rang it up @$31.99 for one package it had 5 blades in it. I told her it rang up wrong and she looked and said "Oh they are on the wrong rack" a whole stack of them so I told her she would have to sell them to me for that price, she hesitated and then asked the manager and the manager said she had to sell them for that price and then put them on the right rack... What a deal 10 blades for $12.99. Finally I got a bargain...

WOW!! That was an awesome deal! lucky you

:-D :-D :-D

kathdavis 11-25-2010 08:31 PM

I purchased on of those Martelli rotary cutters at the sewing expo in October. I love it. It is suppose to put less stress on your wrist, shoulder, etc. The blade is suppose to last a long, long time. With my Fisker, I was going through a blade every project.

costumegirl 11-25-2010 08:46 PM

First I would double check that the blade is put on correctly and isn't backwards. I would next contact Fiskars and ask for their help as they do stand ehind their products.
There are a few egonomic cutters for sale and I think you just have to try them and see/feel which is best for you.
I use Olfas with the straight yellow handle and never had a problem except when I put a new blade on incorrectly. - I wish I had one that was more ergonomic but I would rather spend $ on fabric right now.

kajaza 11-26-2010 10:17 AM

Thank you everyone for your input i greatly appreciate all the help!!

I went to Joanns this morning for there black friday sale and the Olfas were half off plus the 20% off coupon i had... so i got 2.. one is the straight handle with the left/right guard option 60mm ($17)and the other is the ergo 60mm ($19) and also got a pack of 5 blades for $19!! So i should be ALL set for awhile!! I'm hoping it will help my hands from hurting so much! Dang Arthritis!!

Marilynsue 11-28-2010 12:32 PM

I have this cutter in both sizes and I use them exclusively. I love the way it fits my hand and it is so much easier to clean than any of my other cutters. I highly recommend them.
