I must be strange. I keep seeing everyone suggesting that you have to have a 6x24 ruler, that is what they use the most.I have one, but rarely use it. My indispensable rulers are my 3.5x18, shape cut, and 6.5x6.5. To me 6x24 just seems awkward. I have a 24x36 mat, but prefer to fold my fabric one more time and use the smaller rulers. Is anyone else like me?
My Shape cut hands down!!!! Then my 6 x 24 and my 12.5 square for squaring up quilts an such.
I usually use my 6x24 and the 12 sq. most of the time.
there are probably ones that i would use more if i had more rulers. i remember saying that the 6x24 would be a good starter because it is so versatile. you can use it for so many different things.
6x24 for me. Folding the fabric an extra time is another place for the seam line to get wonky (if the fabric isn't folded exactly straight). After that, I use my 9.5x9.5 for almost everything, and I could happily manage with just those 2 rulers (I do have a few more, however). I have two 24x36 mats on my table, running 36" back from the front so the 24" ruler fits well, as long as I don't have a pile of junk at the back.
My 6 by 24 is used most(cutting batting) Then I would have to say my 6 by 8 comes next.

I like the 6 X 24 best when cutting strips. I square corners of quilts with the 15" square, but I also use the small squares for squaring up blocks that have the 45 angle line. I sew my blocks a little larger, and square them with a small square that has the 16ths inch measure on them. Olfa makes them.
I use my 8 x 14 inch ruler the most and it is beginning to show some wear. If anyone knows where I can get another please let me know. It is Fons and Porter/omnigrid
It partly depends on the size of quilts/blocks you work on the most.
When I do smaller than 8" blocks I tend to use my 8x8 or 9x9 rulers a lot and my 4x12 (I think) When I am doing larger projects I use my Big Momma which is 8x12 or my 8x24 and my 18x18 the most. I have plenty of rulers for special purposes but in the end it usually comes down to a few workhorses. |
I to have a small work space, so I find that 3x18, 6 and 12 in sq. are my go to rules
I have a Creative Grid 8.5x24.5. Since most of my cuts seem to be 6.5, I find the wider one works for everything. I also use the 12.5 square.

3X18, 2.5 sq, and 12.5 sq., but very favorite is 6X24 fiskars with rotary built onto it, X-specially for cutting strips!

!

My 6.5 x 12.5 hands down. I use it on every project

When I started out, I used mostly a 6 x 24. Now I prefer my 6.5 x 12.5. Squares that get a lot of use" 4.5, 6.5, 12.5.
Exactly my choices.

Feathers-n-Fur,
I agree with you. I use the same rulers all the time. 6x24 is ackward. Quilter68 |
Because I prefer big blocks, I use my 6x24" and 3x18" rulers the most. I have just gotten a June Tailor Shape Cut and have used it a lot in the last couple of days. I don't know if there is a Shape Cut larger than 12 inches, but if there is, I will probably buy one. I don't like to fold my fabrics more than once since I can't keep the inside folds straight.
6-1/2x24 and 3-1/2x24...and also my short cut ruler used the most and also use a lot my 6-1/2x6-1/2. I use about every other ruler I have on a pretty regular basis too...have square rulers in lots of sizes...just depends on the project I am working on. my largest ruler is a 20-1/2" square and I am glad I have that when I need it.
I don't like my ShapeCut. I use the 8 1/2" x 24" the most!
I use whatever rules is the closest to me...no preference.
5x18 optima and june tailor shapecut for strips, I use the optima squares to square up my pieces and blocks
It's a close tie between my Shape Cut and my 6x12.
My go-to ruler is 6 x 12

I use the 6 x 24 most often. I own almost every ruler made (it seems like it) and I keep using the same one most of the time. I wish I could learn how to fold my fabric and use that shape cutter or some of the others that I read a lot about. I always think that I must be doing something wrong because I just don't get all excited about that Shape Cutter! And when I fold the fabric, well, let's just say it's a train wreck!! :) So I stick with what gives me the best results and makes me most comfortable.
I use my 6 x 24 the most and my 6.5" square second most for squaring up HST's and other small patches and for fussy cutting.
I don't fold twice if I can avoid it because I also suffer from the V strip problem no matter what I do. Even when I use my Alto Quilt Cut--I have the V problem--RRRRRR! I use the Alto for cutting scraps into useful size patches. |

Just love my 4"x14" and my little 4"x4"......I do a lot of PPing and the little comes comes in quite handy.
I have a full size cutting table so use my 24" all the time.
nope, i use the
Creative Grids - 6" x 24" I wish i had known about these ruler when i first started quilting.. i would of spent more for them individually, but i are think they are worth the money. My June tailor square up rulers are the next ones i use the most.. |
6x12 most of the time.
