Sashing or no sashing...opinions please

What do you think?

I like how the sashing makes each block stand out.
I like it both ways, but no sashing, then maybe a border of white, then a thin border of black another of white and a black binding. But any way you choose will be beautiful. Lovely blocks.
Wow! What's cool is that you can't go wrong! I agree that the sashing makes each block stand out, but on the other hand, I love the secondary pattern formed when the blocks meet. Toss a coin!
I honestly think with out sashing. the white is the background and they will float beautifully.

I prefer the no sashing with the secondary pattern giving a place to show off some quilting.
Definitely stashing\
i vote for the sashing because I like the individual blocks. But the secondary pattern by using no sashing would also be attractive
I feel the sashing sets off each block.
Well, I like them both. That block pattern is very neat. Please post pics when you get it completed.
I prefer it with sashing. It shows off each beautiful block.
IMHO, the issue is what sort of quilting do you want to do. Unsashed, you have a lovely space for focused quilting, such as a floral motif. (or space for embroidery or applique). If you don't want to do those, sashed is probably a better idea.

I agree with many so far who have posed the question of how you want to quilt this. I'll add by asking if your seams will butt appropriately or are they all headed in the same direction. If you can't rotate the blocks so that all seams butt, then I'd add the sashing. Your quilt will look great either way, just depends on a few things and what look you're going for. Are you hoping to have your piecing stand out or the quilting?
Very nice blocks by the way. I think I prefer the sashing as it makes each block individually visual. Also like the no sashing picture so I don't think you can go wrong either way. Anxious to see what you decide. Please share your finish.

Otherwise, the points on each block will be meeting up, and you somewhat lose the float. With a white sashing, I would use a SIAS for a cornerstone, so that the centre square would be set on point and the outside would be in the same white. Because of the assortment of fabric choices for the main blocks, I would consider whether to use the same scheme of the SIAS centres or to pick one and use it for each of the centres. Likewise, I would finish with the same outside sashing for the blocks, before deciding on how to finish it up with borders, or not, or what type! If you are really wanting to use the black sashing (or any other colour), you will have the same effect with the points touching against the black. I would still prefer a white border first, in order to let those blocks float within the black. Of course, all are IMHO ........... what you have looks great! I really like the warmth of the scrappy colours on the crisp white background. |
I like the secondary pattern, so I would probably vote for no sashing. But I also like the dramatic look with the black sashing, so I might change my vote. Glad to be of help. :)
I agree with white sashing. Nice looking quilt pattern!
This is an interesting one. To me, the one without the sashing reads really dark. Even though the one with sashing adds more dark fabric, the blocks really pop and all the color shows more. So I vote for sashing, but either is pretty.
I think a white sashing with a design where they meet. You would put a colored triangle on each white strip end and a colored square for a cornerstone then it would form a small friendship star when they were sewn all together.
like the black sashing
I like them both.
Take pictures of them both, tack them on your design board, close your eyes, and throw a dart at them? I think I like it better with the sashing. |
Definitely sashing.
I vote for sashing. It makes a statement.
I like it without sashing - I like the secondary pattern created by the white coming together. Either way it will be beautiful!
Surprising myself, no sashing.
I am in the NO SASHING camp. I like the unity instead of the 20 separated sashed blocks.
If I were making it I would use the sashing. That's going to be beautiful which ever way you go with it.
I like the sashing.
I will go with the sashing camp. To me it seems to highlight each block.
Nice work. |
Its up to you. I think it will be beautiful either way.
The black sashing makes your blocks pop.
Sashing....makes the blocks pop!!
The secondary pattern in the background is so pretty and the sashing stops the flow of the whole quilt and interrupts the unity. It really depends on the look you want. With the sashing each block is highlighted individually like a picture show. No sashing on this one if it were my project.
If you can't decide go with sashing. You won't have to match all those points that way.
I like it without the sashing. I see the colors of the piecing better. The black sashing competes. LIke others, I'd consider white if I used sashing.
How big do you want your finished product to be--if that's a consideration? And then how accurate are your blocks so that the points on the design will meet? These are factors that would influence my decision if it were mine. |
Well you have a lot of opinions here and I agree with all of them. Myself, I would use the black, I like the block look!
