Sashing or not?

1 Attachment(s)
I've finally put together my Grandson's I Spy quilt, however, I'm not sure I want a sashing. I am thinking it only needs a binding. If a binding would help to bring out the quilt, what color should I use? Should it be a solid or a print? My head is just not working right today.

I'd pick out a dark blue from the quilt and bind it with that. The quilt is so nice, some day I'll be that good too. :-)

DebraK 12-27-2013 10:48 AM

your choice whether to border or not, but for binding, I would use a vibrant red, deep dark purple, or a distinct royal blue. a darkish green would also look nice. It could be a print that reads like a solid. Bindings can be fun too. Great I Spy. I like that you used triangles.

Tartan 12-27-2013 10:54 AM

I think I would like a dark blue or black border. It is a great I Spy top!

nygal 12-27-2013 11:04 AM

I vote for a sashing too. It would frame it all nicely. I'd use a dark fabric or even a deep red.

carolaug 12-27-2013 11:08 AM

a border would look great. I am even thinking the same white same size as the others and then another border with a darker color.

cjsews 12-27-2013 11:19 AM

I don't think it necessarily needs a boarder unless you just want to make it bigger. Pick the boy's favorite color for the binding. Almost anything will work since it is probably already in the quilt. I really like the layout you chose.

quiltsRfun 12-27-2013 11:21 AM

Perfect the way it is. I agree with the suggestions for a dark colored binding.

Pennyhal 12-27-2013 11:55 AM

Yes, a dark border would finish off this quilt nicely I think. if you use the same fabric for the border that you use for the binding, it would just look like a little larger border.

Jingle 12-27-2013 11:55 AM

I like a border on my quilts. It is up to you whether you have a border or not.
Very pretty quilt.

I don't think it requires any borders if it is the right size for your grandson. I would do a red binding though. Nice I Spy, you did a fabulous job and creative choice of pattern!!!

QuiltnNan 12-27-2013 12:51 PM

i don't think it needs a border, either. but if you want to enlarge it, i would start with a white border about the size of the white 'stripes' and then a somewhat wider dark border.

BellaBoo 12-27-2013 12:53 PM

I would use squares of the I spy fabric to make a border and sew strips of the I spy fabric for the binding.

What a beautiful quit! It's gonna be loved! Sorry, no help on decision making stuff....just wanted to say what a great quilt it is.

Thanks to all who gave me thoughts on my dilemma. I think I'm going to go without the boarders and just do a bright red binding. I wish I had enough of the I spy's left to add to a scrappy binding, but unfortunately I add to my swaps to get it this size. Even though I like the thought of a boarder ( either red or blue) I'm gonna try it without and see what happens. I can try a boarder on the next one ( using all the girly Spy's ) So will post pic when finish ( give me a couple of weeks)

You know the more I read your thoughts. I like it. Almost like a matted frame. I may do this. For some reason I didn't think a solid Border was gonna look right ( and that's where my brain went dead). I said okay then just a binding. But I"m liking the the cream smaller boarder with another brighter one. Oh, thanks so much. Ya'll are the greatest.

Sandra in Minnesota 12-27-2013 05:57 PM

I would go for a dark border too.

I agree. The white would "finish" the inside white strips, then a darker border would frame everything. I like the idea of binding it with the same fabric as the darker border, though a border made of pieced strips of the I Spy would be good, too.

mighty 12-28-2013 07:44 AM

I do not think it needs a border, looks really good the way it is.

Jan in VA 12-28-2013 12:41 PM

Personally, I'd bind, no border or sashing.
It's a great scrap quilt. :)

busy fingers 12-28-2013 12:47 PM

Nice layout of the blocks. Border or no border it will look good.

Did you start at the middle and work out when designing or just twist and turn each block and sew in rows?

joeyoz 12-28-2013 07:45 PM

Sashing or border? There is a difference. If you are wanting to make it bigger then go with a border of dark blue. No border then binding in dark blue would look good.

giquilt 12-28-2013 07:50 PM

I vote no border unless you want to increase size.

southernmema 12-29-2013 04:23 AM

My vote is for a border to frame your work of art!

Yooper32 12-29-2013 04:44 AM

No border, dark binding.

Yes busy fingers that's what I did. I layed them out starting in the middle. Love I spy's and I say someone's layout simular to this on a quilt she made. So it made me think verse's using them just as pinwheels.

That would be my vote also, nice quilt.

lclang 12-29-2013 05:26 AM

I would vote for a border or a very dark binding. A quilt without a border or an obvious edge looks like a picture without a frame to me.

Baconbit 12-29-2013 08:39 AM

I love this, where can I find this pattern? I think I could use a jelly roll that I have to make it.

fangman 12-29-2013 09:09 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, and I would also use a dark binding, as it acts as a frame.

ManiacQuilter2 12-29-2013 09:34 AM

I don't think a border would be needed unless you need the final size of the quilt to be larger. Any darker fabric will work for the binding. I am sure that your grandson will enjoy this gift you made for him.

sewbizgirl 12-29-2013 09:56 AM

That is a great design for an I Spy... and it doesn't need a border unless you just want one. I personally like my I Spys pretty busy. Just bind it!

krissr 12-29-2013 10:04 AM

I agree a border. Your quilt is great and I know he will like it

MargeD 12-29-2013 10:22 AM

I love it, what a great I spy quilt - I've never seen one done in triangles before. I might bind it with a dark blue or burgundy.

Grandma Peg 12-29-2013 11:10 AM

Great I Spy quilt and agree it could use a small border.

solstice3 12-29-2013 12:37 PM

A dark blue binding. It looks great

debbiemarie 12-29-2013 01:14 PM

Normally I like borders on everything, but with this quilt I am thinking a border might box the design in, I am not expert. I would try laying some dark fabric under the quilt with just a border length showing on all sides if you can (even if it's different colors) just to see what happens when you put on a border.

caspharm 12-29-2013 02:16 PM

I agree with a dark binding, no border.

Auntie Em 12-29-2013 06:20 PM

It is an awesome top....I would vote for a dark border....am going to have to check out the I Spy pattern....love it!!!

BETTY62 12-29-2013 08:37 PM

I think it would look nice with a blue binding and without a sashing.
