sewed them wrong all afternoon

have you ever spent a half a day sewing together your blocks wrong? I'm so mad at my self, I could spit.
this was a quilt kit had gotten like 10 years ago, so startd it yesterday. cut all the strips for a queen quilt, then spent half of today sewing the all wrong. guess I'll spend all day tomorrow taking them apart.

omacookie 06-22-2014 03:51 PM

I did that on Saturday so Sunday I have to RIP!!! I had an excuse:::: The lamp burned out.......

Tartan 06-22-2014 03:54 PM

Bummer! I like to use my little curved blade snips to snip the thread every few stitches instead of a seam ripper. The thread on the other side usually pulls right out and I find the pieces stay nicer. Take the blocks all apart and press the pieces and wait for the next day to start again, SIGH!

lfstamper 06-22-2014 03:56 PM

HATE when this happens! Sorry for you. happy ripping.

ging10ging 06-22-2014 04:17 PM

Sorry to hear you do the same thing as me sometimes. I hate that ripping. I don't know why the instructions are not written at the beginning with the finished size. The quilt I am doing says block size 7 1/2 and then when you look at the pic it shows cut to 8 it's so frustrating so I really understand how you feel. Just know it's a seam ripper club. Sue

The first of the week I started a Fun and Done quilt. My singer doesn't have much in way of decorative stitches and I used sort of a cross hatch stitch. I did 6 of them and decided I didn't like it so today I ripped all of that stitching out. Wasn't easy. Finished it up a little bit ago and just used a straight stitch...like it much better. I feel your pain....for sure!!!

Jeanne S 06-22-2014 04:35 PM

I have done that many times too! It is a downside of chain piecing!!

redquilter 06-22-2014 04:39 PM

Been there done that! I feel your pain. Such a waste of time, but it happens.

grandma7 06-22-2014 04:39 PM

I feel your pain! There are times when I feel I'm MUCH more adept with my seam ripper than I am with my swing machine...

Quiltngolfer 06-22-2014 04:51 PM

I have to do some ripping on every quilt I make. I hate it too.

GrammaNan 06-22-2014 05:37 PM

Sew sorry :( You will feel a lot better once you have done all of the ripping and ironing. I hope you will post a picture when you are done.

franc36 06-22-2014 05:57 PM

I feel your pain! Recently, I sewed over 60 blocks incorrectly and had to rip them out. Fortunately, I had a new seam ripper. I spent a day ripping; but it was worth it. I gave the finished quilt to my daughter. It is her favorite quilt. I'm now glad that I took the time to rip and re sew.

quiltingbuddy 06-22-2014 06:39 PM

I've done that more times than I can count. It's an unfortunate part of the process for me. I've done it so much I bought myself an ergonomic seam ripper LoL. Sorry about the ripping but happy restitching to you.

Dina 06-22-2014 07:21 PM

When I do that, I usually decide to use the blocks as they are and pretend that is the way I wanted them. No one knows but me....but then I hate to rip out seams....:)

Dina

pamesue 06-22-2014 08:00 PM

oh don't ya just hate it...done that more times than I would like to admit.

jo bauer 06-22-2014 10:23 PM

Wish the brownies would show up over night and the next morning, all would be ripped out and ready to go.

Yeah, every time I've waited for the night fairies to fix my problems, they're on strike. ;)

litacats 06-23-2014 04:38 AM

I think we all are best friends with our seem ripper I cut every 4 or 5 stitches then pull the thread out less chance of cutting the fabric. I had to rip out a whole middle section as I had reversed the pattern.

KwiltyKahy 06-23-2014 05:44 AM

Welcome to the club. As shown in these replies, most of us have done this. Yesterday I started a QR code quilt for my defacto grandson. Checking and rechecking the rows, oops that one is wrong. Ripped it out and then rechecked, oh no, it was right! So had to restitch just like it was. Bummer.

I totally agree. I try now a days to do a test block first and make sure I have read all the fine print in the instructions !!

toverly 06-23-2014 05:58 AM

Ouch, I have sewn quite a few wrong. That's when I put that project aside and only rip in front of the tv at night. It seems to make it a little easier than ripping all at once.

sewNso 06-23-2014 09:02 AM

yes, we have all done it. thx for the pity partry. I took about half of the 3.5 inch strips apart and will do them some along, as I need them. I guess that is why we are suppose to make a practice block or two, before we do all the sewing completely wrong. but I believe we get lots done, because we just 'wade in' and do it. right?

athomenow 06-23-2014 10:03 AM

Well right now I'm crocheting and I swear I've ripped out more than I've put in. I don't know why I had such difficulty with the simplest pattern on earth, a ripple. But I can't stand to find a mistake and not correct it. So we RIP! Sorry you had a bad day but it will be better now. After a day like that I watch so carefully for a little bit! LOL

jbaby 06-23-2014 10:10 AM

Been there, done that! I had 60 log cabin blocks sewn wrong, at least two logs. I started over it was so bad. :(

pokeygirl 06-23-2014 10:48 AM

I know how you feel. I'm sometimes off in la la land while sewing and then all of a sudden I wake up and see what I've done and have to rip it out. We all do this so don't be too hard on yourself.

KalamaQuilts 06-23-2014 12:34 PM

if you are thinking you were the only one, you live on Saturn :)
It is part of the fun, at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

quiltingeileen 06-23-2014 12:54 PM

I've been there too many times to mention. Hope your ripping goes quickly.

katesnanna 06-24-2014 02:10 AM

I feel your pain.

zennia 06-24-2014 02:37 AM

I always say I make two quilts, one wrong then rip rip rip and then the right way.

sval 06-24-2014 02:39 AM

How about when you go to all the trouble and work to hand piece a lonestar block, well actually 4 of them for the corner of a quilt and they come out so wonky there's no salvaging them? I thought by making templates and having the lines to sew on and then doing it by hand would be the most accurate. No seam ripping here, they're going in the trash. I'll have to use this as a design opportunity and do something different. Or nothing. Maybe just a border with no corner block.
I just wish I understood what the problem was. Every piece was traced accurately and sewed exactly on the lines. Lots of pinning, etc. And oh what a mess they are.

Fabaddict 06-24-2014 04:20 AM

are you sure you cant change it into a design change?

lindaschipper 06-24-2014 04:53 AM

I'm going to reach for the seam ripper today too. The blocks are made correctly, but don't like the color combinations I made, so will ripe it ALL apart and use fabric for another quilt.

I don't see how. They are beyond hope. They aren't square and if I try to square them up I'll be cutting of points. Lots of points. There is to be appliqued fruit also. I thought that was going to be the challenging part as I've never done any. Tell me if I"m nuts to try that. So if the applique goes well in the big set in triangles, I thought about appliqueing a piece or two of fruit in the corner blocks. Or if all else fails, just slap on some borders and call it done.

trolleystation 06-24-2014 06:04 AM

Am making pinwheels lately and seem to do more ripping than sewing.....I am mad at myself

tessagin 06-24-2014 06:10 AM

Been there. Had a beer saved for the next day. Was afraid if I tried to use ripper, I'd just rip it all. Took few more beers and a few more days before I touched it again.

RIDGEFIELD 06-24-2014 06:41 AM

Had to laugh at your saying "So mad I could just spit" Been there done that and said that old saying. Good luck taking them apart.

rosiewell 06-24-2014 06:50 AM

yep, been there done that!

FroggyinTexas 06-24-2014 06:58 AM

If you have completed tht many wrong and can figure out how to continue making the same mistake, keep making it and you will have created something different. froggyintexas

rural01 06-24-2014 07:11 AM

I'm so pleased to hear that others make the same silly mistakes that I do. It seems that whenever I take on a project, there are always moments where I make these kinds of mistakes. One time, I would like to do a project without having to use the seam ripper. :-)

Quilter 65 06-24-2014 07:20 AM

Annoying for sure. Be careful not to poke a hole in the fabric (ask how I know about that).
