Found this great idea on www.pleasant-home.com and wanted to share. Great way to sew binding on a quilt!

DebraK 10-23-2010 12:31 PM

That works.

pojo 10-23-2010 12:31 PM

That is a clever idea.

MadQuilter 10-23-2010 12:59 PM

Clever! I generally roll mine on a tp center. That way it is contained and I can move it out of the way.

nativetexan 10-23-2010 01:26 PM

better than having it around my neck!!

Spudgm 10-23-2010 01:29 PM

Good idea!

tjradj 10-23-2010 01:34 PM

Tried it - works great!

featherweight 10-23-2010 01:36 PM

Great Idea, I will give it a try. Just finished binding two of my UFO's will post pictures later.

pab58 10-23-2010 01:38 PM

But if I did that, what would the furbabies have to smack at as I'm sewing!!??

amma 10-23-2010 01:53 PM

Very clever! Thank you for sharing this :D:D:D

brookemarie19 10-23-2010 01:55 PM

I like that idea. Will have to try it later

But…But…..that takes all the fun out of it
getting a chokehold around my neck,
or falling between my legs on the floor,
or being rolled over by my chair wheels,
or running up *under* the whole quilt where I can’t find it,
or of being just too ha-bitch-uated to think up a better system!!!
Now you’ve done it! :?

I usually lay my quilt out and pin the binding to the quilt before I sew it on. This way I know I won't have a seam come out at a corner. And also to make sure I'm going to have enough binding. I also use a walking foot when I sew my binding on.

littlehud 10-23-2010 03:25 PM

Cool. Thanks for sharing.

I also discovered wrapping on a tp center just lately! Sure makes thing go alot smoother, especially if your doing a big queen or king size quilt!

Wow, wonder why I didn't think about that. It is so simple. I just finished sewing binding on a lap quilt and used a bowl. I will be sure to use this method with my wall hanging.

Linda58 10-24-2010 05:14 AM

I can't wait to try this!!
Thanks

sandpat 10-24-2010 05:19 AM

Great idea, thanks!

mollymct 10-24-2010 05:28 AM

Yep, me too. Especially if I am using bias, I find if I don't pin it first it is more apt to get stretched in places when it is rolled out.

MoMoSews 10-24-2010 08:08 AM

Duh!! Why can't I think of that stuff?

bgullett 10-24-2010 08:10 AM

Great idea, but like Jan indicated, what about the chokehold or losing it under the quilt! Going to try it next binding time. Thanks for sharing.

phill99 10-24-2010 08:33 AM

looking for quilt patterns of betty boop and dogs and kittys thanks phill99

quiltaroni 10-24-2010 09:16 AM

That is the best idea and I love it.

ajohn52 10-24-2010 10:38 AM

I roll my binding and stick a pencil in the center, then put the pencil in a coffee mug. The rolled binding sits on top of the mug. It unrolls easily as you go and keeps it contained and handy.

carolstickelmaier 10-24-2010 11:58 AM

REGARDING THE NECKLASS OF BINDING: I GENERALLY WRAP THE BINDING AROUND SOMETHING THAT I CAN GET MY HAND THROUGH AND PLACE THE ROLL ON MY WRIST AS I SEW IT ON. NO MORE TANGLED MESS OR "CHOKE HOLDS"

ghk1936 10-24-2010 12:44 PM

This sounds like a winner. Mine always gets tangled up. Thanks for sharing.

Roberta 10-24-2010 01:25 PM

Now why didn't I think of that and my table is clear so I'll know if I'm going to run short. Thanks for posting this

Well, I know it is time I bought a walking foot. Yours is the 2nd hint today saying a walking foot is needed. I have known it, but just haven't taken the time to figure out where to buy one.
Can anyone tell me where to buy a walking foot? This is what I have. My "big" machine is a off-brand Singer--Stradivaro, which we bought the 2nd year we were married. I have loved it and still do.
My other machine is a Featherweight, which I also love. If anyone can tell me where to start looking for a walking foot, it would be great.
The featherweight is a Singer--made in 1942...

What a good and simple idea. But I'll have to use it next time, I finished putting binding on a tree skirt that was last year's gift. I made myself finish it so my son and his wife can use it this year. But I'll remember this idea for my next binding job. Thanks for sharing!

Sandra-P 10-24-2010 02:52 PM

Thanks for sharing that tip. I will give it a try.

quiltnmom 10-24-2010 02:55 PM

Great idea.

Suz 10-24-2010 02:56 PM

I noted you are using your 1/4" foot for the first stitching. If you find your outer edge of the quilt "waving", this is your problem. This was a problem for me and now I always put on my walking foot to do the first stitching.

I went to the site but could not find the picture. Is it part of a tutorial? If so which post and how do you find it on the site?
