My boygriend bought me a singer sew simple 2 yrs ago . I thought wow , a few more sts than what I had . The bubble burst real quick  The blasted thing keeps getting hung up and won't move . I have sent singer several e-mails . All they say is [ you haven't threaded the machine correctly ] Well bullsheet ! I am so blasted aggravated !
The first time I took out the bobbin case and ring out . The factory had the thing in sideways ! I kid you not ! It's a good thing I have an older singer that will only straight stitch . Won't zigzag [ needs some work done ] The repair people around here want $85.00 just to look at it , doesn't include any repairs . What to do ? Annie

Shemjo 11-30-2009 02:56 PM

I hope the fella that wants to buy his wife a new machine sees this! We like to buy our own machines from dealers who will look after us. Are there any on line web sites to get help? I wouild be upset if I couldn't get any decent help.

DollyRose 11-30-2009 03:06 PM

Make sure the bobbin thread and the upper thread are the same make. And make sure the bobbin thread was wound on this machine and not another. Insure the bobbin case is inserted properly, the correct bobbin is being used, and the machine is threaded properly. Then CALL tech support. These are some of the first questions they will ask you...
The $85 up front is usually a security payment to insure that you will come back and pick up your machine! In my experience, it is well worth taking a machine in for repair, I always get the repair done and a 'lube and tune'. My frustration and the time spent getting worked up to the point that whatever is broken takes a flying lesson? Cheaper to take it to the repair guy...

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 03:07 PM

I haven't found any yet ! Annie

Moonpi 11-30-2009 03:14 PM

My last Singer was a piece of crap too - the commercial line. It got to the point where repairs were going to cost more than a new machine, so it sits on a shelf, neglected. I had used it for a couple years, and it cost more than the Kenmore/Janome I replaced it with.

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 03:17 PM

The hang up is only part of the problem . The bobbin winder only winds half a bobbin ! Stops and won't wind any more . I always use the same thread [ upper and in bobbin ] .But thanks for the suggestion . I have tried different brands of thread , no effect .
Figure this out . In the book , says class 16 bobbins , not the right ones ! They won't fit in the bobbin case ! And yes they are singer bobbins . I don't mix and match them . Annie

I think this machine sells for about $350 so it would be worth getting checked out by a good repairman. Also I would call around and find a Singer dealer and take the machine in and say why won't this work! The dealer has the number of a live person at Singer and can get something done about the machine or can take it as trade in for different one.

This machine was on sale at Walmart for $75.00 . Annie

Oh, the one I saw was a computerized Singer Sew Simple and it had a price tag of $399. It is a Martha Stewart pick. :-D

I pity anyone who buys one ! I won't be buying anything else from them . Annie

BellaBoo 11-30-2009 06:57 PM

I'm not defending Singer but any machine made for discount stores including Brother, are made very cheaply and very fast. Quality control is random so a lemon will more than likely be the norm instead of the rare. Some buy them and they last for years, it's the luck of the draw. The high end Singer and Brother machines are very nice. I don't understand why they have the lower quality with the brand name, a bad machine will turn away customers from that brand for life.

amma 11-30-2009 07:05 PM

I am so sorry tht you are having this trouble

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 07:06 PM

I'm just grumpy :-( . Nothing I have tried is working  Annie

MadQuilter 11-30-2009 07:07 PM

I had a Singer with a slant needle. Every so often the timing would be kicked out of whack and I had to have it serviced. Hope you get the beastie to be reliable.

amma 11-30-2009 07:09 PM

I have a singer, and it gets really picky if there is very little lint in the bobbin case... the thread was getting caught up in the bobbin hook, and that little bit of lint was the culprit...one time it was the tiniest snippet of thread that fell in there.

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 07:09 PM

madquilter your screenname describes the way I feel right now . Annie

Annie,
What type of warranty does this machine have? If it's still under warranty, take it to the repair shop. They should fix it for free.

Singers website lost my info for my warranty , so that isn't any good either . It's just adding fuel to the fire . There isn't a singer representative close . Something has been defective with it since I got it . Singer won't replace it either . Unhappy in Va ! Annie

Leota 11-30-2009 07:34 PM

Do you still have your reciept? That's proof of purchase and they should honor it.
it's worth a try. but you know the old 3 & 30 rule.... when something good happens...you tell 3 people ... something bad you tell 30.
Singer doens't like bad publicity....especially the individual businesses...

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 07:36 PM

Nope can't find it . Annie

Leota 11-30-2009 07:38 PM

Have the same problem with my swimming pool pump I bought last fall. the pump failed but because I can't find the receipt, they won't fix/replace it. :( We didn't have our pool this past summer :(

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 07:41 PM

Neither one of us are having very good luck . Annie

auntiehenno 11-30-2009 07:48 PM

I know how you feel when you want to sew and your machine is having a bad day. It would make me FURIOUS!!!

auntiehenno 11-30-2009 08:02 PM

Wish I were closer and I would lend you one of mine. Once when I took my Singer in to get a tune-up, the owner loaned me one of their, at ni cost, as I needed it for some sewing.

stitchinMamaw 11-30-2009 08:19 PM

I think after the holidays I'll go to one of the local repair shops and see what kind of machines they have . These new machines sure aren't like the older ones ! Plastic pieces of junk . well I sent them another e-mail . See what they say tomorrow . Nite all . Annie

littlehud 11-30-2009 09:59 PM

How frustrating for you. I got a singer last Christmas and I loved it. That is til it started giving major problems. I now have a new machine and that one sits unused.

How about the battery powered bobbin winders they have out now . Are machines picky about those too ?

stitchinMamaw 12-01-2009 06:24 AM

Q.
My machine is jammed.
A.
A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in the hook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towards you (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. *Always turn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you (clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam your machine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position before you start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam your machine in the bobbin case.
This is fron singers website . Last 2 sentences . Does this mean you can't put your needle down before your presserfoot ? Does anyone know how to set the timing ? If you do please let me know . Annie

I try to have my machines cleaned and checked by a dealer at least once a year. That way if something is going wrong hopefully it can be caught. Besides they can get into places I can't. I clean my bobbin area every time I change bobbins. I encourage my students to clean their machines often. I even ask when their machines have been cleaned lately. I tell them they wouldn't leave their babies in dirty diapers, why the machine.

bstanbro 12-01-2009 09:50 AM

Beware of repair, however. I took an old Singer into a shop to have the zigzag fixed--it wouldn't zigzag. At the time, I wasn't sewing much--only Halloween costumes for the kids. I went to pick up the machine after it was fixed and paid $85 (this was 20 years ago--expensive!), then took it home and put it away. When I got the machine out again many months later, the zigzag still didn't work. When I took it back to the shop, the shop was out of business. Drat!

consider it a lesson learned. most WalMart machines are made in China and have basically no warranty. If you only paid $75 then toss it and get a good one from a reputable dealer. No point spending more to repair than you paid.

My first sewing machine, given to me as a wedding present 12 years ago, was a Singer. The woman who gave it to me was older, and hadn't bought a machine in years -- when she was actively sewing, Singer was "the brand to buy." Unfortunately, the machine she gave me was just awful -- I had constant tension problems, and I finally gave up on using it. I finally bought a Husqvarna Viking for myself a few years ago, and I LOVE it.

stitchinMamaw 12-01-2009 01:10 PM

Got my email back fron singer . Now it's a tension problem , machine not threaded right ! Bull crap . I've had it . I'll do some research after the new year and see what kind of machine I can afford to get . Not much since I;m unemployed . Maybe I'll go old school and handpiece  Annie

quiltmom04 12-01-2009 01:52 PM

You can't do the timing yourself. A dealer will know how to do that, but be aware - he (or she) won't do it for free.

quilt_happy 12-01-2009 01:58 PM

Sometimes if the wrong bobbin is in the machine it won't move

Any machine that is made for discount stores(Walmart), is made to there pricepoint. So, things will get made of cheaper parts in order to make them happy with the price. Call the 800 # on your warrenty. You will wait awhile, but at least get to vent. Ask them to send a call tag for your machine or to have you machine repaired at a dealership near you. Don't give up!

Knot Sew 12-01-2009 03:04 PM

the new singers can drive you nuts...find a thrift store and get an old machine...they are easy to work on and its better than the low line new ones... I did get a kenmore for 200 and it has been great...good luck

there's a little screw on the top of the little wing thing where you wind the bobbin thread. loosen that screw, move the little wing thingie out then tighten the screw to make it wind a full bobbin.

jojo47 12-01-2009 04:38 PM

I agree, BellaBoo. I've never purchased a sewing machine from a discount store, and never will. The two New Homes I have were from reputable dealers; the Brother machine I have came as part of a package deal when I took a sewing course a few years ago. (It's an ES2000 adn I love it for its light weight and also the buttonholer.) I inherited my mother's Singer Golden Touch and Sew, and it sews as well now as when my dad purchased it for her for Christmas many years ago. My newest machine is a Pfaff Expressions 2038, which I bought 2 years ago. I like all of my machines, but I think my all-time favorite is my New Home MC 6000. It's old and the computer is starting to go, but it more than paid for itself with all the sewing I did for my family.

stitchinMamaw 12-01-2009 04:41 PM

dojo your post made me laugh ! Love your terminology ! Wing thing and thingy  Sounds like something I would say if I wasn't so aggravated !

There is no screw in the top of this machine ! I have oiled and cleaned this thing so many times , it shouldn't get hung up at all . I took out the bobbin case and ring , took out the needle , removed the presser foot . Oiled it , ran it with no thread for several minutes . Put back together , same thing happened [ jammed ]. Handwheel won't turn either . It has been like this since I got it . First singer said I threaded it wrong . Not . Now they say it's the tension . Shaking my head , can't believe this crap . Annie
