I belong to two guilds and haven't seen anyone sew shoeless at sew days or workshops. At different sewing retreats (very casual) I go to I haven't seen anyone sewing without shoes. Interesting that so many posters here sew barefoot.
For a long time, I sewed with shoe off because I could only wear sneakers. I finally found a pair of shoes that fit (fat feet with high instep) that didn't cost an arm and a leg and can now sew again with shoes! I have diabetes now and stepping on pins just ain't the thing to do.
Can not stand shoes as they are confining, so just wear socks around the house and Birkenstocks sandals if I go out.
I go barefoot as well!
I am a shoes on most of the time.
I am always barefoot when I am indoors, so I sew barefooted.
Socks, I hardly ever go bare foot!
Shoeless here too. :D
I sew with my slippers on. I can't seem to put enough pressure on the foot pedal without it. Also, I drop pins and don't want one going into my foot.
I am also a barefoot (or at the least with socks on) sewer. But
always wear slippers indoors and slip one off for sewing. Being diabetic my Dr. drums it into my head that I must NEVER be without shoes even indoors because if I got cut, stepped on a pin/needle or hurt my feet that it could be much more harmful to me. If your not diabetic (or are familiar about diabetes) if we get cut or injured it is very likely going to take longer to heal, and if you have neuropathy (also known as nerve damage) to any part of your feet (and toes) than if you got injured you wouldn't feel it. As for me I DO have a small amount of neuropathy in my toes. |
sign me up for the bare foot/sock club!
Another barefooter!
Never wear shoes. Ex California beach bum.
Not!
I always love this question when it comes up on the board. Even when I go to take a sewing lessons someplace, I where shoes I can easily kick my right shoe off. |
I never sew with shoes. I don't like to wear shoes indoors...or outdoors, if I can avoid it...finally warm enough to go barefoot around the yard.
And - when I was a child, I studied piano for 10 years. We had recitals 3x a year, very formal, dressed up in stockings and heels, (it was the late 70's/early 80's) in the teacher's living room. At home, I practiced shoeless, including the piano pedals. So, at the recitals, I would discreetly (though it wasn't too discreet) slip off my shoe or shoes once I sat down at the piano. My very formal teacher did not love this, but that's what I needed to do, so I did it. I did make sure I had no runs in my stockings! |
I kick my shoes off no matter if I'm sewing or not. Then I find pairs of shoes around the sun room. I have to remind myself that it's illegal to drive without a shoe on the right foot, especially on a highway trip. I don't feel that I have enough control of the foot pedal if I keep my shoe on when sewing. But then, as opposed to driving when I apply pressure with the ball of my foot, when I sew, I use my toes to apply pressure.
I'm also guilty of sewing with no shoes , granddaughter is following in my footsteps lol
ME!! I've always sewn barefoot.
I'm barefoot most of the time, it makes it easier to locate the pedal to use the Bernina "tap" when I want to do a half stitch.
Yes, ma'am, no shoes on these feet unless it is really superduper cold then my favorite slipper are on, but in Texas it rarely gets that cold for very long. Got to be able to feel the foot control.
No shoes here I bought fabric instead!
One shoe on and one shoe off. Much easier working the pedal without the shoe.
I almost always sew shoeless, just more comfy
Usually shoeless. Sometimes if I forget to wear slip ons to a class I will sew with shoe on, but I really prefer not to.
looks like the shoeless wins. I need to feel the pedal too so I am generally in my stocking feet!!
I was told that if you kick your shoes off and place both feet on the pedal it will keep you spine straight and hour back and hips will not get sore because both feet are even. I tried this and it really works.....
my pedal foot is bare too.
I was born barefoot (so I'm told) and like to sew barefoot! When the weather is cold, I may ( or not) have on a pair of sockies.
LOL! Guilty as charged. I can't feel if I have my shoes on. Barefoot stitcher here!
I can't run the machine right if I have a shoe on.

Guilty! Sometimes I get up and press seams or do something on the PC and not bother putting the other shoe on.
Having never had a home ec class, I wasn't aware that shoes were necessary to iron! (j/k) |

I have a knee controller (love it) but always sewed barefoot until I got a stray pin impaled into the ball of my foot! Now I sweep the floor regularly and I wear slippers!
I always wear something on my feet, either shoes, slippers, or my crocs, especially after a couple of gals in my old guild had problems after getting needles or pins in their feet. One gal had to have surgery to remove the pin that had traveled up her leg.
I always sew barefooted.
