I have a farm that I use as a weekend home. My husband spends a lot more time there than I can. He's retired and I have a long way to go before I can.
On our property, we have a camp ground next to a creek. I have been thinking all summer that I "need" a treadle machine so that I can quilt under the trees. (My other option is to use a generator but I have gotten it in my head that the threadle would be peaceful). Are there any con's (reasons I shouldn't) I have a building that I could store it in when I am not there. |
I love the idea of treadle-ing outside. Mine is by a door, but would need hubby's help to get it out and back in. Couldn't leave it on the front porch in a subdivision. My only con - would be if you couldn't be sure it was safe when you weren't there.

I think it is a wonderful idea. A generator would be so noisy that I wouldn't even consider it. Go for it!

Great idea. Treadles are very heavy so you will need some sort of trolly to keep it on for ease of moving it.

It sounds wonderful. :) I just love creeks. They are so peaceful and I think of them as happy places. :) Treadling there would be so something I would want to do. :)
That sounds so peaceful but you better be sure there are no friendly quilting inspectors lurking above in the treetops wanting to add a few more designs to your fabric choices!
wish I could do that...sounds like a wonderful idea to me!
I think it sounds great! An inexpensive indulgence which is also practical. I'd like a treadle for piecing during storms and to beautify my living room. My mom learned on a treadle, even though she's only around 60 yrs old. So I'd like to also learn and teach my kids. I'm not going to start looking until other projects are complete. Good luck with your brilliant idea!

Sounds peacefull. I might concide a screened tent with a floor to minimize on the bugs. It may be too hot during the day, and too dark at night, unless you can rig up some lighting. Then the light would surely draw in the bugs. I have a treadle at my farm and am concidering the same thing. I have the screen tent but the bugs are brutal.

Hubby and Friends are usually out by the creek playing horse shoes so I would have plenty of assistance getting it in and out. I shared the idea with him this past weekend and I think (fingers crossed) that one of my friends is working to find one for me :)
I go up about every other weekend, and they are used to me sitting at the picnic tables cutting pieces. |
I love your idea of sewing outside.
I think it's a wonderful idea!

That is a super idea! Wouldn't it be so peaceful to sew on a quiet machine and listen to the birds sing. Makes me want a treadle after all these years for I would sew out on the patio where there are always so many pretty birds.
Looks like you need to make that dream come true! It sounds absolutely perfect to me!
Sounds lovely to me - is that why so many of the old treadles were left outside?
I hope you do it!! Sounds wonderful!!!!!!! :D
Sounds like a fun idea. I ran a sewing machine up in the haymow when I was just a kid. Enjoyed it immensely even though it was a hot place to sew.

Decide where you want to put her and use a moving dolly as someone suggested. I have my Singer treadle in my sewing room and she weighs a ton. You'll want a solid surface for her to sit on and give her a coat of sewing machine oil to keep off rust.
A treadle or a hand-crank would be perfect...sounds like a very achievable dream...happy quilting.
Go for it sound out of this world
That's exactly what I was thinking, but you put it so well!

And. of course, we expect to see pics of your haven once you have it set up - we can live vicariously through you & pretend to hear the creek & all of nature.
Sounds like a winner!
Creek - any chance it would flood? If not, love it.
Sounds like a great idea.
Please bear in mind that they rust...easily.
Love the idea and sounds very peaceful, but not this time of year is this georgia heat
Concept is great but.... bugs!!!!! I would think I would be battling flies, ants, etc that all the joy would be gone. I would rather have a screened in area where I could enjoy the sounds, etc and keep the crawlees, etc out! JMHO :D

I lived on a farm (off and on) that had no electricity until I was about 33. The treadle was what I used. Spinning wheels are similar activities. You should enjoy.I saw an interesting video where a man goes into the streets in San Francisco and repairs peoples' clothing for free. He uses a treadle.

Wonderful idea!
Now that's pretty close to heaven.
Wonderful idea!!! Go for it! Perhaps make a platform for it to sit on instead of the grass, or a smooth place where its level will work.
I love this idea!! |
Can someone pour you a small concrete pad or build a wooden platform (could double as a picnic area)?

Sounds like a summer idyll...so peaceful.
What happens when it rains? Treadles are heavy to just pick up and run.
Wonderful idea. I have one of my DH work tool extention cords and sit out quite often. I just don't like having to bring it in every night, but it is well worth the break down and set up every day. :D
i would be worried that the humidity would rust the machine.
Sounds like a quilters dream to me. Sure hope it works out. :-)
