I got up this morning after very little sleep and wanted to sew. I started to work on a very intricate block but my mind wouldn't cooperate so I figured I could do 4 patches. I cut my strips just so...no problem...sewed strips in pairs... no problem...subcut the strips and sewed in 4 patches......big problem. I had them assembled in 2 different ways so i carefully rip out the 7 that were "wrong" and proceed to put them together like the top one on my "good" pile. Only problem was....the top one was wrong too..........grrrrrrrrr...so now i have to rip out 8 of them. I carefully get all of them assembled and think "I can do this". I should have quit while I was ahead. I did the first row okay and got the second row done. After I assembled the 2 rows I found that I had put the rows together wrong.... and the blocks are going in different directions...........back to the drawing board. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Thanks for letting me vent............

Ouch, rough day! Yep, time to give your brain (and your nerves!) a well-deserved rest!

Stitchnripper 06-26-2011 02:47 PM

Yes, I agree. Time for a rest! I have been known to get the block pieces in order and mess them up by the time I get to the machine, and have made the same mistake more than once!! Not fun.

blueangel 06-26-2011 02:49 PM

There are day's like that. They will get better.

MadQuilter 06-26-2011 03:10 PM

When I do that, I put the "wrong" pile aside and use them on a different project. Of course I can do that only if I have enough fabric to cut new strips.

quiltmouse 06-26-2011 03:33 PM

I discovered working on a 4 patch doll quilt that it is really easy to sew them wrong. pick up two 4's off the pile, turn to machine, and if you turn them & sew top or bottom instead of the SIDE, they are wrong. I ripped more on that doll quilt than I usually rip on a throw!

I will always pin 4 patch from now on!

ChrisB 06-26-2011 03:47 PM

I have days like that! I have to lay all my things out to keep me from getting confused and stitching it wrong. I don't like for Jack (the ripper) to come out to play!

sisLH 06-26-2011 03:56 PM

I'd have liked to have seen a picture -I'll bet it looked good all mixed up -just not like you had envisioned it.

dltaylor 06-26-2011 04:24 PM

Hope it gets better. We all have days like that..don't we?

sueisallaboutquilts 06-26-2011 04:27 PM

I'm agreeing with the poster above me. YES, we sure do!
Hope you get a good sleep and have a better day tomorrow :)

gzuslivz 06-26-2011 04:38 PM

Sounds like time for a mocha, bowl of popcorn and a movie to me!

Twisted Quilter 06-26-2011 04:40 PM

Been there, done that! It's time to take a break. :|

alikat110 06-26-2011 05:58 PM

So sorry

sewnsewer2 06-26-2011 06:12 PM

Don't feel too bad, I have had days like that too :(

graciemae 06-26-2011 06:20 PM

If it makes you feel better............I was making a few tote bags today and was so proud of myself that I was able to finish three when I discovered I had sewed the inside pocket upside down. Now I have to rip it apart to fix it. I need that one for a birthday gift tomorrow. Hopefully, it will be a better day and hope yours is too.

sorry you had such a bad day, now I know I'm not the only one who screws up.

Carron 06-26-2011 09:18 PM

With out those types of days you would never appreciate the good days. Hopefully you have more good ones.

BETTY62 06-26-2011 11:43 PM

I'm sorry you had a bad day. I hope tomorrow will go better for you.

thseabreze 06-27-2011 03:12 AM

oh..so glad I am not the only one that has done this! :? :!:

mcdaniel023 06-27-2011 03:31 AM

Happens to all of us. Last weekend, I had a sinus infection(I am blaming that, lol). I decided to make a small throw with a panel. The top was so cute. Machine quilting, not so much. Decided to practice feathers. One side not so great but I can live with it. The other side, got the hang of it somewhat and put the binding on and went to show DH. I said look at how nice I did those feathers. He says, why did you do them upside down? AHHHHHH!!!!!

cbjlinda 06-27-2011 04:13 AM

I think that all of us do this but I have found that by the time I have made the second mistake to walk away and have a cup of coffee then go back to it. usually thats all it takes. If I keep trying it just seems to get worse.

Just-Lee 06-27-2011 04:24 AM

Maybe it's just me, but if I don't get adequate sleep, I screw up a lot. I just can't seem to concentrate on what I am doing, but try to do it anyway, and end up with many Grrrrr's! I have just learned to notice when I am too tired to do anything sewing related and stick with housework...blah.

carolynbb 06-27-2011 04:31 AM

Ugh...I hate when that happens! Breaks are definately needed - sometimes sooner than we realize! Better luck next time.

Wonnie 06-27-2011 04:42 AM

For me, after all that, I would have ripped and pressed what needed to be pressed then put it up for a day or two. When I was ready to try again everything would be ready to go and I wouldn't have to think about having to rip and press before I started in.

Scakes 06-27-2011 04:43 AM

I've done similar things - very frustrating, isn't it? For me, setting it aside and getting away from it helps the most. But I have to rip it out first. Can't seem to let it sit there "done wrong". Have a good day.

Yep its time to take a short catnap and try again later

maryp 06-27-2011 05:09 AM

get some rest and try again

dinlauren 06-27-2011 05:36 AM

I've had a good night's sleep and managed to get 3 rows put together correctly. I ran out of focus fabric so stopped before I messed up again. Will go back later. Thanks for letting me vent and offering suggestions and support.

meanmom 06-27-2011 06:06 AM

I am working on the Hoopsisters mystery quilt. I made the first block and somehow the colors are wrong. I have not quilted in 2 days because I am mad at it.

I will always pin 4 patch from now on!

I think pins are the answer. Even if I don't need to pin a patch to sew it together, I use a pin to indicate which is the side to sew. Has saved me lots of "unsewing" time. But for those that say, leave it and come back later. I'm one of those that can't rest until it is undone and redone. That would drive me crazy to walk away from it!

juliea9967 06-27-2011 06:10 AM

When I have days like this I ask myself "Am I having fun?" If the answer is No, I quit doing it and start doing something else. Quilting should be fun!

charlotte625 06-27-2011 06:11 AM

now this sounds like something I would do & do do....
when I wake up in middle of night.
now if I do go to bed at all I sew ok...what is the deal?

vivoaks 06-27-2011 07:38 AM

Don't you just hate when you do things like that?!!! Been there, done that....

purrfectquilts 06-27-2011 08:00 AM

Sounds like a good day to hang out with a good book or go back to bed and sew another day. I am sorry your day did not start out well, but hopefully it is better now.

jljack 06-27-2011 08:03 AM

GO TO BED!!! ;-) ;-) A good sleep will clear your head and you'll be fine to re-do it all!! Good luck!

NitaM39 06-27-2011 08:05 AM

Time to go back to bed and take a long nap. There's always tomorrow...............

I hate days like that. Sorry nothing went well for you but sit back, regroup. When that happens to me, I go watch a movie or get into a book to take my mind off it, then go back the next day with a new outlook.

grannie cheechee 06-27-2011 08:27 AM

I think there is a club for quilters like us. The ones that keep making the same mistake over again. LOL
