Some are "sew-on" and some are "shank". Shanks are best if you are using them with buttonholes. For decoration on wall quilts, for instance, I always use the sew-ons. Shanks tend to droop.

Ditto for Home Sew. Have used for years.

I have actually found some shaped buttons in the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby and AC Moore, Joannes also but be careful sometimes they do not have the shanks

I have been looking for small red cardinals for two yrs. now. Found one in a small bird assortment, but just need cardinals. Any ideas? I have tried all links here and also haunted JoAnnes and Michaels and Hobby Lobby when I get near one, which isn't very often.

Found some here, a little expensive but a good selection http://www.cafepress.com.au/+cardinal+buttons |
You can also go to the Simplicity pattern site, probably the other pattern makers as well, as they would have decorative buttons for their pattern lines.

Home Sew has a good selection. I bought several from them. Sent for their catalog and ordered on line.

You might try quiltedmemoriesllc.com. I know they have them in the shop.
