My mother passed on a few years ago and I didn't get any of the quilts that she had made. My 4 sisters figured that, since I make quilts, I wouldn't want any....

That is sad. Just because you make quilts does not mean you want one of hers. We seem to make quilts for other people but not for our self. Why is this?

helou 10-11-2011 02:53 AM

My deepest sympathy
I too felt like an orphan even if I was in my fifties... a parent is a parent no matter what age we are.
nice to have the quilt for comfort moment!

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. You must be around my daughter's age. I would be so sad to leave her so soon. I know your mother would have stayed with you if she could have. It seems you were such a wonderful daughter to be with her and share her last days.

I will pray for your strength. I know your Mother would want you to think of the happy times you spent together. God Bless you.

I'm sooo sorry to hear of your loss. You are exactly right though, make those quilts, runners etc for your loved ones. They love and appreciate it! My fil recently passed and I'll be getting the items that I've made him back, sort of a bittersweet thing.

So well said Shirl, my sentiments exactly.

I am sorry for your loss. But you are absolutely right about not letting perfectionism keep you from quilting for your loved ones. Quilting is another way women nurture.

I have a fleece/flannel throw I made for my husband during his last months of life. It is nothing fancy, just a piece of fleece with a piece of flannel hand-tied together and fringed around the outside edges. My grandchildren spent many nights cuddled in that throw after he passed. I still enjoy wrapping in it while watching TV. It gives as much mental comfort as physical comfort. I am so glad you and your sister have those quilts to comfort you. My mother thought quilts were a frivolous waste of time spent. She always told me "idle hands are the devil's workshop" but she just didn't think quilting was time well spent.

veryvirginia 10-11-2011 04:04 AM

Deepest sympathy for your loss, but once again, you have proven what I have said for years --a quilt is a bandaid for the soul. It can heal the deepest hurt.

mimiknoxtaylor 10-11-2011 04:18 AM

So sorry for your loss. Praying that you'll feel the love of those dear ladies wrapped around you in the quilts they cherished. God bless you

Condolences on the loss of your Mom. What a sweet story and a great way to remember her with gifts you gave her.

GJoyce 10-11-2011 04:50 AM

Thanks for your post on not worrying about perfection. I am making my great grandson his first quilt. He will be born this week but I'm having trouble making the points meat perfect. I have always been a perfectionist and it is driving me so crazy I was ready to toss what I have started. I'm going ahead and finishing it now with your post and just hope when it is all together it won't show so much.
I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom also and know how it hurts.

Bren 10-11-2011 04:51 AM

Wondering if you could get photos of those quilts the sisters have and make yourself a quilt using the photos and maybe colors of fabric your mother loved. So sorry they didn't share. Maybe you can make lemonade out of lemons. Hugs,
