Rectangles!

However, Pat bought me a beautiful square wallhanging in Virginia and I love it too.

I like rectangles.

I prefer a rectangle. I do have a couple of vintage quilts that are square, but I am tall and I want the quilt to cover me lengthwise. Also, I like a quilt long enough to cover the bed and hang over the foot and well as the sides and sometimes cover the pillows too. But all told, I love them all sizes and shapes.

Rectangle. They fit the bed better (or when you're lazing on the sofa) :D

I like asymetry and rectangles, but some square wall hangings appeal to me. Sometimes, a square is what you need, as someone pointed out for a king size bed or a queen size with the overhang. It depends on where the quilt will be used.

So I guess I'm both!

I make both -and depending on what I want the quilt for I use a pattern that is either square or rectangle.

Rectangle for quilts.... a wallhanging is a different kettle of fish... whatever fits the design.

i like an overhang so i like a square for a queen quilt. so if you give yourself a drop at the foot of 16" to cover those cold toesies, and a drop on each side (i have a high bed and i like to touch the side rail) of 18" to prevent WW3, i get a square of 96 x 96. that covers those two large lumps in the middle.

It depends. King size quilts are normally square because the bed itself is square. Baby quilts are square, as are most wall hangings, but I guess square or rectangle matters only by what your final outcome is supposed to be. But for curling up on the couch, I prefer a rectangle quilt to keep my feet warm and a place for my kitty to curl up under. She loves being under the quilt most of the time.

Pecularly. because people expect the quilt to hang down both sides of a bed, and at the bottom, sometimes, the side to side width equals the top to bottom length.

Also if the number of blocks is the same for length and width, it is going to make a square, which is easier not to make mistakes on....since every side is the same, all four lengths are the same for construction.
It also often can be turned any way when it is on the bed.
