Haven't read all the posts but when I discovered my start/stop button I use it all the time unless I'm using my Feather Weight. I hate fumbling around to find the foot pedal. So far I've never found a way to stop the foot pedal from sliding away from me. I especially like that I can set the speed and once you really get used to using the button you don't even think about it. And yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I've been sewing for over 50 years.

I tried using the button but didn't like the loss of control. It would go too fast (although I slowed it down in the control panel) or I would mess up stitches while reaching for the button. Sometimes it would go past where I wanted it to by the time I hit it.
Basically, I now just use it if I am doing long, repetitious, straight seams. |
I did the "foot pedal dance" for too many years. When I discovered that start/stop buttons were available, I was first in line to get a machine. I don't even know where my foot pedal is anymore. I love being able to "set" the machine speed. Love, love, love start/stop button.

Especially when I am FMQ, I like both hands on my work when the machine starts, so I use the pedal. When I applique I need both hands on my work and sometimes go one stitch at a time, so I use the pedal. I am very interested in the advantages of the start/stop button because lots of you use it, and I don't want to miss out.
I hate lifting my one hand from my project in order to push the stop button. For me, it doesn't work. |
You all will wonder what planet I am from....here I am thinking "what is a start/stop button?" I have never heard of that before now. And i have 3 sewing machines plus 2 sergers!

YEARS ago I had (and still do) a Quilters Star by White machine and never used the start/stop button.
The two machines I use all the time don't have that button. I use the cruise control on my truck all the time, it saves gas. |
I also like the start button for FMQ, but during regular sewing I never feel like I'm in control unless I use the foot pedal. I get that panicky feeling like it's running away from me!

I use the start/stop on my Janome, which was one of the features that I wanted when I bought it. Have used it doing FMQing and also just piecing. I DID have to retrain myself to use it but I put in the time to learn and now I love it. Takes practice to learn all new things. It comes down to what you really want to do.
