I think it depends on the quilt. I use it for smaller projects, but never on my bigger quilts. Mostly because I like the softer feel of the fabric and putting it on by hand.

The store-bought stuff, Wrights anyway, is all 55%poly/45%cotton. If you go to the trouble of using 100% cotton fabrics in your quilt, it seems kind of silly to toss on a mostly poly binding just to save some time and pennies. To me, it's kind of like wearing tennis shoes with your prom dress.

this place sells premade bindings, called lollypops |
I like to use up leftover fabric when I do a binding, and it really doesn't take much time to make it. But you should do what works for you. I wouldn't ever call it cheating. It's your quilt.

I'm probably really weird because I love to spend hours making binding for all the baby shelter quilts I do.For some reason I find it calming.

I always find it rewarding to bind a quilt because it's the last step. (other than washing and maybe blocking) |
I say if you're happy with it, go for it. Theres no cheating in quilting, its your game play it how you like and make up the rules as you go along. You'll find what works for you! I've done the rip and roll binding method on some of my quilts, some would shudder but it works and its alot quicker than all that pressing and folding.

I used it on the first bed quilt I made and my daughter was the one who put in on the quilt. I've not used it since.
