hi everyone, i`m working on a quilt and was thinking about finishing off with a store bought binding tape instead of cutting one up with matching material..do any of you use store bought...would it be cheating??? ty for your input i appreciate...

the only way I have ever been able to use store bought is if I iron it flat and make it double binding. Otherwise I could never get it straight. There is no cheating as long as what your doing works for you. =)

I haven't tried it on a quilt but have used it on garments and really don't care for the fabric itself and honestly think it would take away from the quilt..remember this is just my opinion, I think it looks cheap( my mom took that shortcut on one, I didn't have the heart to tell her ) and now that I'm a quilter, if I ever have time to make garments again I'll make my own seam bindings too.

I don't think it's cheating, but I agree with kathy. The fabric in the store-bought binding seems to be thin. I don't know if it's a shortcut I'd want to take. Unless there's something out there I'm not aware of besides the bias binding in the little packets.

I tried to make my own blanket binding out of statin and also silk and ended up in my scrap bag. It is easyer just to buy the satin binding instead. Saves you time and money.
