Robert Kaufman is coming out with a new collection of striped fabrics - 14 colorways in all. That's a lot of stripes!
Do you personally use stripes? What do you use them for? |
I often buy stripes, especially multi-coloured. I like doing the binding with them if colours suitable.
I guess I haven't bought any stripes because I'm not sure how to use them either. If I did more clothes sewing, would buy them for that. I wish the powers that be would make more clothes with stripes, especially tops as they tend to make a person look taller and slimmer and I could use that.
I have used them in borders and in sashing, but these stripes are a bit much. I can also see them used in totes. It will be interesting to see what patterns they offer to showcase the fabric.
i love stripes! there are so many ways to use a stripe, going (long ways) cross cut, mitered, sashing strips, borders, accents...pick up a couple and experiment, you will have fun!
I just recently found a nice striped material to use with something in the future... maybe sashing or borders. stripes next to a print are nice too.
I do not use them myself, but maybe someday :)
I agree that this would make a great tote for summer. I also use stripes as lining for bags and purses.
I Cut on the bias and use as my binding. Gives a lot of interest to the edge of a quilt. When I see a strip4 I buy it and sometimes look for fabrics with the same colors and plan a quilt around the stripe that will be the binding.

I think they look good as blenders but never use them as I get totally frustrated if they do not stay straight up and down. Sure are pretty though.
I use them as the bottom part of a bag, as in a tote bag as a contrast to the main fabric.
I love stripes for borders, binding or even sashings.
I love stripes, they are really good for backings, bindings and borders.

I have two quilts planned that will use stripes. One is a variety of striped fabrics, mostly bright colors, simply cut in large squares and sewn with a wide white sashing. I plan to alternate the direction of the stripes in each placement. My aunt has a quilt made up like this on her porch swing and it is darling!
The other is a Warm Wishes quilt with the strip block having 5 strips. The two outer strips will be my striped fabrics, and will be sewn adjacent to the focus fabric. I am hoping this will add movement to the layout. Now I just hope I will be able to cut those striped fabrics straight!!! |
I have used directional patterns (not stripes) and they require a special forethought so they go in the "right" direction in the block or the border. I always notice when mine don't and I get upset that I didn't notice before sewing them down. (Generally I leave them as is though)
Stripes are also really good for pillow case cuffs, especially for young ones.
Stripes can be very effective in diamond patterns - like stars - as long as you plan your cuts. I have used them in flower baskets, also
I don't like stripes.
I love stripes, but agree that they are hard to use.
I like using stripes, but prefer a more decorative rather than just plain ones like these :D:D:D
I like them for borders too.
I usually don't buy stripes but I love the idea of using them in a border.
I love striped fabrics !
I wrote a tutorial about how to use them, it is here: http://cadouri-din-inima.blogspot.co...h-stripes.html |

I love experimenting with stripes. String quilting is good as well as so many others. Be adventurous.
I love to use stripes for bindings!
 Greta, THANK YOU for your tutorial on creative use of stripes. Got lost for an hour (or more) clicking and learning on your blog - I am now hooked on your blog!!!
Stripes are great for quick lap robes or baby blankets. Just cut out squares and arrange them to look like a basket-weave pattern. Surround them with coordinating borders, and you end up with a quilt that looks a lot more complicated than it was.
Fussy cut stripes for quilt patterns. One piece of striped fabric can be cut so-o-o many ways
By the way, GREAT tutorial and website. Thank you for bringing it up.
I love making bias binding with stripes. This fabric is really pretty!

I recently posted this table topper using stripes. I've posted it again.
When cut on the bias, stripes make a wonderful 1 1/2" inner border. What I mostly use stripes for is binding, cut in bias strips. Stripes make very interestingbindings and add a lot to the finished look of your quilt. If they are not cut on the bias, my strips will make you drunk because I obviously don't sew straight. LOL
Cut on the bias stripes look great for the binding.
What neat ideas. I had not thought about using them to do the seminole patchwork designs.
You could use stripes for the lower part of a cupcake
pincushion. That would look cute. |
Kaffe Fassett has done some beautiful quilts in using stripes. Pictures and directions are in one of his quilt books.
I shy away from them because I'm afraid I will cut or sew them crooked!
I've never used stripes, but with some of the patterns
for quilts I've been looking at, I might be tempted to use them. Catlady |
