Grrrr.

I think I was too excited about being almost done with my quilt top.

I decided to make my border HST's....so I cut a bunch of blocks, chain sewed them down the middle and then tried to cut them 1/4 inch away from the seam.

DUH!!!! Sigh.

franie 01-15-2011 10:27 AM

It's ok. If they don't fit, save them for another project.

OMG ... sounds like something I would do!! :( Well now you have small triangles for another fun project, may I suggest:

don't ya hate it - why do we do these things to ourselves?!

Ouch! I'm so sorry! I have a fear of doing that myself.

UglyCook 01-15-2011 10:41 AM

Aw, stop beating yourself up! We all make mistakes...just make yours into a new design.

Holice 01-15-2011 10:50 AM

did you measure to determine the design and size of the hst before you made them.
If they don't fit then center a string of them and before you get to the end you can add a strip of fabric. See if this might work. Mitre the strip in the corner and it will look like a frame the side of quilt and ends may be different but adding the strip of fabric might balance it.

DawnMarie 01-15-2011 10:56 AM

If you cut the squares to the correct size, you can sew 1/4" on each side of that center seam. Then, you can cut on the center seam and selvage your hard work.
Hopefully this is the case. :)

DeneK 01-15-2011 12:33 PM

Recently did the same thing myself... And no, I didn't cut the correct size to just sew either side of the first stitching. But as someone suggested, I do have some smaller HST's available for use elsewhere.

gale 01-15-2011 12:59 PM

I must be really dumb today because I can't figure out what the mistake was.

kbs 01-15-2011 01:01 PM

Don't let this ruin the day, we all have made similar mistakes. Try again and use the first ones in another project. :)

ann clare 01-15-2011 01:20 PM

Know the feeling

Guess I am too because I can't either. Unless it is her HST units are now too small but There are some good suggestions here to still utilize them. Especially Holice's. However, Rachel's really cute idea of framing them to get them up to size could be another option. AAARRGH decisions !!! ;)

Great idea..

MadQuilter 01-15-2011 03:00 PM

So Plan A didn't pan out. This is the time to get creative and figure out Plan B. You may surprise yourself. OMG - every time I made a mistake, the final result (invention is the mother of necessity) turned out better than the original idea. Just think outside the box.

littlehud 01-15-2011 03:39 PM

I can see myself doing that. Oh well, you have some precut triangles. sigh

Lisa 01-15-2011 03:50 PM

It's ok......been there......done that!

Lindsey 01-15-2011 03:56 PM

you can still sew on either side of the stitching and make your hst. i have sewn down the middle before. had one of those doh moments. Just resewd them. Your going to be cutting on the stitch line anyway.

amma 01-15-2011 04:00 PM

If we didn't have these duh moments occasionally, we wouldn't be human  :D:D:D

azwendyg 01-16-2011 04:06 AM

Stranger things have "happened" in my sewing room at times! You made me chuckle 'cause it sounds like something I'd do.

cheri stonespinner 01-16-2011 05:50 AM

Sounds like a Ditter joke!

janiesews 01-16-2011 06:19 AM

You aren't the only one that has done that--I did catch myself when I started to cut the 1st one though and then did a lot of ripping.

It appears as if the sewing was done down through the diagonal of the block. When cut on each side, what was left was unsewn triangles of the wrong size.

What was meant to do was draw a line down the center (rather than sew), then sew 1/4 " on each side of the line, then cut the line and you would end up with two half square triangles. In order for this to work, you need to have cut the squares large enough for you to end up with half square triangles the correct size.

skillon 01-16-2011 07:31 AM

Okay!!!! Got it now. lol Thanks.

SandyMac 01-16-2011 07:39 AM

Three times I had to undo the binding in a six inch spot to get a wrinkle out.

Rhonda 01-16-2011 07:40 AM

Try making them with the cut down method. They come out perfect every time with no hassles and little to no waste,

laurac 01-16-2011 07:45 AM

its so easy to make a "stupid" mistake at the end of a project. i've almost made that same mistake many times.

Being a quilt maker I find we really don't make mistakes. What doesn't work for one quilt will work for another. So don't feel so bad it all works out in the end. Happy Quilting

hikingquilter 01-16-2011 08:11 AM

I nearly did the same thing one time. Luckily I caught the mistake BEFORE cutting them in half!

Renee, I am so laughing. I did the same thing once. But when they didn't fit the project I was doing (very very new quilter) I couldn't figure it out. I was JUST following the instructions, you know.... yeah, right. It took me a couple days of puzzlin' over it, and then finally going back through the instructions step-by-step, piece by piece to finally figure it out. I laugh at it now. I mean,.... really,... how classic!

Hahaha...guess I'm really really dumb because I don't know what an HST is.

And really really really dumb for not reading the whole post before replying because I would have had my answer.

Hey I did that one time. I feel your frustration.

catrancher 01-16-2011 09:35 AM

I've done something similar.

Tweety2911 01-16-2011 11:48 AM

Been there, done that and had a good laugh after cussing a bit. Make lemonade out of lemons and make two quilts :-)

happyscrappy 01-16-2011 03:18 PM

you know that old saying: haste makes waste . . . well in a quilters world: haste makes another start for a quilt!

IBQUILTIN 01-16-2011 03:22 PM

When mistakes hand you lemons, make lemonade. Wish I had a nickel for every time I did something like that.

vtretire 01-16-2011 04:58 PM

I've done that a few times myself. You're in good company :)

sewingsuz 01-16-2011 05:02 PM

I also had to think about it. the seams go 1/4 inch from the middle of the seam, and then you cut down the middle. I think this is right. I would have done the same thing. Live and learn.

OneMoreQuilt 01-16-2011 05:04 PM

I'm sorry that happened to you but glad to know I'm not the only one who does these things when in a rush.
