Suggestions for these corners?
1 Attachment(s)
I am working on a medallion wall hanging. No pattern....just adding borders, with lots of math help and suggestions from you wonderful people!
The corners of the on-point blocks are bugging me....they look like bandaids to me! I have googled a bit, but I have not come up with a solution....any suggestions would be welcomed. Its still at a point where I can un-sew it...next border will be 1x3” flying geese....I think! |
Looks good! They don't look like bandages to me and once you ad a quilting design maybe in contrasting thread, it will all pull together.
amazing work
How about appliquing something in that space?
Wouldn't change a thing. I think it looks very nice as is and it's symmetrical
which is sometimes hard to achieve when adding pieced borders. |

Loving what you've done, but if the corners bug you so much would it help if you replace them with a nine patch.

I think I would applique two long skinny points on each "bandaid", coming off the centers where the seam is. If you don't want to applique long skinny points, almost any other shape would work to destroy the bandaid image: small half square triangles along those two sides to pick up on the "feathers" on the center star, or diamond shapes just like those on the tips of the feathered star. Even a shape with curves would look pretty and contrast with all the straight lines in the piecing. It would be faster than taking the blocks out and inserting new blocks, and you could end up with something very unique and interesting, one of those "happy accidents"!
You could put a triangle on top of the two squares or applique a shape like the end of the feathered star has - I think it's called a parallelogram??
you could also just leave that space white.

If you add one more on point square to each border and also shift them over by half a square, you can get the on point squares to meet nicely at the corners. It would look like this:

White corners are good, perhaps put some interesting quilting designs, or applique or embroidery in them.
Beautiful quilt. I like platyhiker's suggestion.

Platyhiker beat me to it. You just need to reorganize the location of your on-point squares (scoot them over a bit), then add another square.

What size is this quilt and how much area is there in the "new" white space? I'm wondering if you could add a star to each corner, similar to the main star, but simplified?
Just think of them as pretty bandaids. I it ain't broke, don't fix it! Love the design and colors of your quilt, corners and all.
I like Playhiker's suggestion=I think it complements the feathered star medallion nicely. I felt there was something missing with the 'band-aid' arrangement. Please show us your quilt after you consider the suggestions and make your choice. Your quilt is very beautiful.
How about a paper-pieced fan in the corners? Wish I had a photo of the one I did - it solved the same problem that you're having.
I like Playhiker's suggestion equally as well as the plain white blocks. I think either would work very nicely.
I don't know what to tell you. It's absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, all. I will think on this a bit. I only have a small amount left of the white I print used on that border...the quilt at this point is 45”x45”, so those corners may just blend in when I have added a few more borders. I am going to play with making some arc’d flying geese for the next border-saw them in a Halo quilt someone posted here and I love them!

Another option is to put one large square on point in each corner. The points of the square both vertically and horizontally will line up with your smaller on point squares because of the way you centered them in the round. Hope this makes sense.
Edited to add, this is really lovely. I adore feathered stars and you are doing a great job to show it off. |
nix the bandaid (sorry), but any of the other options are fine.

I love your quilt so far and like the idea of adding another square or using the white instead of the "bandaids"
I like it, but if it is bothering you, then you could possibly change the corners to half square triangles, pointing towards the outside. Then either leave it as is and perhaps do some quilting in a dark color in the open space or use another square on point. Have the point of the square touching the point of the triangle. This would fill up the white space but keep all the diagonals.

Thank you Feline Fanatic....I am movin’ On! :). That bottom left corner is not really puckered....
And thank you to all for your suggestions...takes a village for me to create sometimes and I am thankful that you are all so willing to help. |
I agree that the "quilting" is going to make a big difference in how you see it. Your focusing
in on them too much. They fit this whole design layout. I would do a quilting design that started at one corner and scalloped out (convex style from corner), to next corner, and then another and another until you've done the concave stitching all the way around each half of the block. It surely won't look like a bandaid then. It's lovely  |
oh, I see you have some other suggestions. Well, lol, I gave you 'my' best shot. :)
Love your "fix"...and I love the quilt. Geese for the next border? Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I would appliqué a fleur de lis type shape over your bandaids pointing towards the corners in a color similar to that on the points of your feathered star.
I think it is beautiful however you do it.
If you want the corners to end with a single on point square-the same as the rest of the border:
On the sides, you have the correct number of on point squares, but you need to begin & end with a half of a block (HST on point) On the top & bottom, increase your on point squares by one, and then on the ends, at a right angle to the last square, add the other half square. If you don't like splitting the square: Increase the sides by one on point square, and add a small white border to bring the center unit up to the correct width. On the top and bottom, increase by one on point square, but you'll have to reduce the width of the white next to the center. |
Your fix really did the trick. Looks like it was meant to be designed this way from the start. Good job.
Love the fix.

I was trying to visualize GEMRM's idea of putting the diamonds in the corners, and this is my crude rendition, but I like the effect, and the simplicity of the change would be a big advantage.
Sitting back and looking at that some more, I think you could put a diamond on the underside of each of the "bandaids" as well.
i think what you have is great, I like it better than any of the alternatives but you do what pleases you.
Jillmc, So glad I could help. Your redo looks great. I hadn't considered making the square a 4P but it looks perfect and didn't seem to require too much unsewing. Additionally it didn't use any more of the light value fabric you indicated you didn't have much of.
Can't wait to see how you finish. You have inspired me to move my feathered star quilt up the bucket list! Want to finish several WIP first. I am determined to get some long term projects buttoned up before starting something new. |
