They are the same as the ASCII codes used in writing html, the old-fashioned way I learned when dinosaurs roamed the earth. They were developed BEFORE laptops, so the keypad was used exclusively to input the codes.

Laptops actually have keypads if you know how to use it.

I just Google "degree symbol" "1/2 symbol" etc..
and then copy/paste it into whatever I'm typing. 8-)
