I have noticed how people will write out the word 'degree' because no one is aware how to make the 'º' symbol. It is simple: press down the 'Alt' button, while doing that punch in '167', release the 'Alt' button, voila the degree 'º' symbol will appear.

Another symbol is the cents '¢' symbol. Simply press down the 'Alt' button with one hand, punch in the numbers 155, release the 'Alt' button and like magic the cent '¢' symbol will appear.

I hope this helps someone, it is just a little knowledge and timesaver.

Boo hoo, I can't make it work - is it because I have Windows XP?

Scissor Queen 02-15-2011 09:40 AM

Go to programs, then the accessories folder, then system tools and you'll find a whole charactor map with all sorts of stuff.

Mine did the same thing if I used the number keys above the "qwerty" alphabet keys. However, when I used the numbers on the number pad, it worked for me. Might want to try that. However, after reading further down in the post I found how to get to a whole lot of special symbols. Now to remember how to get there when I need it.

mythreesuns 02-15-2011 10:08 AM

I do not have the number pad on the side..only on the top.

Did you look in system tools to see if you have a character map?

JanetM 02-15-2011 10:20 AM

Now to find that character map. Thanks!

ckcowl 02-15-2011 10:25 AM

cool- but i will probably never remember which numbers i'm supposed to hit, and will probably not come looking for this post 3 weeks from now when i'm trying to tell someone how cold it is outside :)
wish it could be easy...ya know, the alt part is fine...but then 3 different numbers and symbols? to me it's just easier to write degree or cents then to try to figure out which numbers those are...unless there is some way to make a notation on the computer itself with a list of those...hmmmmm
thanks though, i always figured there was some way

Mamagus 02-15-2011 10:25 AM

Well the first two are what I got by using the number pad with the ALT key. The rest are three digit combos witht he ALT key. My son's gf spells her name with ï so i learned something very personally useful.

It is easy. It's on your character map in system tools.

thepolyparrot 02-15-2011 12:52 PM

ALT + 0188 ¼
ALT + 0189 ½
ALT + 0190 ¾

running1 02-15-2011 12:53 PM

On my Mac it's: alt 0 for º, and alt 4 for ¢...
Pretty nifty!! Thank you!!

Also helpful for the proper spelling of such words as voilà and appliqué.

http://www.danshort.com/ASCIImap/

They are the same as the ASCII codes used in writing html, the old-fashioned way I learned when dinosaurs roamed the earth. They were developed BEFORE laptops, so the keypad was used exclusively to input the codes.

Laptops actually have keypads if you know how to use it.

Ditto - a bit long winded, so I don't think I will be using it, somehow.

Craftygirl 02-15-2011 03:06 PM

Fantastic. This has always driven me mad. Thanks fr the info.

Here is a link to the "alt codes."

incoming2me 02-15-2011 06:09 PM

I must be a lazy bum.
I just Google "degree symbol" "1/2 symbol" etc..
and then copy/paste it into whatever I'm typing. 8-)
