Are you sure you are pressing the 'Alt" key and using the keypad to your right, is your numbers lock on? Hope this helps.

WOW - that worked and I never even knew I had all those characters :D
The alt thing doesn't work on my laptop - windows 7

twogeebs 02-16-2011 08:14 AM

Thank you! How many times when I'm doing a recipe and don't want to write out "degrees", this is so much easier.

LivelyLady 02-16-2011 08:19 AM

thank you!

Hit F11 at the top of your keyboard.

Hit "reply" under any post in the thread. Then on the left of your reply box you will see "Tags" under the Smilies. When you have something that you want, say changing a color to red, do this: place the word "color=red" in brackets as shown. Then insert your desired symbol or words. Then type "color" in backets again but precede the word "color" with a forward slash like this /...that undoes the color change and is a required step even if you just want everything to be red.

I'm sorry that this explaination seems a bit convoluted---but if I typed the code it wouldn't show, just do the action (at least, I don't know how to over ride the code to make it show as originally typed). Note that there is an added bonus in doing a regular reply (vs. "Quick Reply" option at the bottom of the page). It allows you to do a preview of your reply, a very handy option for me with my bumble fingers and at times marshmallow of a brain. :o

Thank you for the kind words about my avatar. It is a close-up of my art quilt "We've Got Sisters!" that appeared in RaNae Merrill's Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts. She is an amazing artist, designer and teacher!

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions regarding getting your signiture back other than trying to re-create it. I believe this is the link to do that:

Good luck!

I have an HP Vista and it works!

olmphoto2 02-16-2011 08:44 AM

hmmmm....
I'm just trying to use code (in this case, turning "hmmm..." red) in the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the page.
Maybe code only works in a 'regular' reply vs 'quick'?.
I don't know if there is a way to preview a quick reply, so here goes, I'm hitting "Send". :))

Adding edit: It does work if you know the proper code

Inez Rice 02-16-2011 08:50 AM

Pretty nifty!! Thank you!!

I discovered this, too! It was fun to play with the keyboard while holding down the ALT key! Never would have thought of it! Thanks so much!

IDquilter 02-16-2011 09:47 AM

doesn't work on mine - but then again I am computer challenged.

polly13 02-16-2011 09:47 AM

The fractions are great when typing recipes or pattern directions. ALT+0188=1/4, ALT+0189=1/2, ALT+0190=3/4. I have a list of several others, but rarely use them with my sewing.

Lyncat 02-16-2011 09:50 AM

Thanks, I knew how to do it on my mac but not on my pc. ¢˚(on the mac you just type alt and $ at the same time for ¢ and alt and k at the same time for ˚. you learn something new every day!

Another symbol is the cents '¢' symbol. Simply press down the 'Alt' button with one hand, punch in the numbers 155, release the 'Alt' button and like magic the cent '¢' symbol will appear.

I hope this helps someone, it is just a little knowledge and timesaver.

Nothing happens when i push down the Alt key

Try engaging "NUM LOCK" then using the keypad.
