Draw it out on graph paper. I normally use 1/4" graph paper. If the block is small enough, I make it true to size. Otherwise, I let 1 square = 1/2" to go half size. Once you've got the block drawn out correctly, identify your pieces and group same fabric pieces together. Figure out the finished size of each piece, then add your seam allowance into the measurements. Test it in scrap material first before using the good stuff.

yes, i have duplicated many patterns from pictures. i usually bring up my EQ5 and play. i just love my eq

I do this all the time. I will spend hours in EQ playing with a pattern that I just put in there from a picture. So easy to change size, color, boarders, etc. These then go on my "want to make someday" list ;)

And then check it a third time!!!!!!!!!!!

As suggested graph paper will be your friend ... and don't forget about the seam allowances. And also, if you're doing HSTs that it takes extra yardage if you're making them using squares and then cutting in half.

Think it thru as to everything you'll need, including border and binding.

And then when you go to buy your fabric ... buy extra!!

If not needed, you can add it to your stashes .... or have extra when you change your mind and decide to make it differently or add an extra border, etc!

Use graph paper or spreadsheet in Open Office. I also use Gimp for coloring.
I can't have EQ on my computer so I had to find alternate ways and it's all free. :-D

Since that quilt is an original design, you'll probably want to get permission from quilt1050's daughter to copy it in a larger size, before you go much further on this project, don't you think?

I just finished making a test block with scraps. I think it turned out ok, and actually ended up with the size I wanted! :lol: :lol: :lol: Not too bad for my first log cabin block, ever! And I have a call in to the maker of the copied quilt to get permission.

I might be a bit easier to do it with half square triangles if you want the look without the log cabin squares.

That way it would be an inspiration rather than a direct copy...and much easier to draw out on graph paper!
