Beautiful fabrics. :)
I have the same problem at my Wal-mart. So many times I wanted to have some fabric cut and no one was available or showed up. I gave up and left. Hopefully word will get out to all the stores.

Drew 09-15-2011 07:43 AM

Those fabrics are beautiful!! Perhaps, he needed the earful; but he deserves KUDOs as well. Call the store! Again, don't mention the free part.

thrums 09-15-2011 07:47 AM

That's a good resolution to the problem. At least Mgr. James understood what to do about customer service regarding a dissatisfied customer.

WalMart is starting to feel the pinch of self-service (from entering the door to check out!) as other stores are cutting into their bottom line. (finally!) It's time we let big box stores know what we want rather than dictating to us what we will get. I think a word to the coporate office will help bring WalMart back from self-service to customer service including positive feedback of what its doing right.

Ok off my soap box...for now.

Meme2six 09-15-2011 08:18 AM

My nearest Wal Mart has fabric but it's so disorganized and leaning every which way that I don't enjoy looking at it. There also isn't a very good selection yet. I visited the fabric department in Springfield, MO, last weekend and it was fantastic! I hope my Wal Mart can find someone for the department that really cares how it looks. Also, the fabric is in a tiny area so there isn't much room for a good inventory.

Iraxy 09-15-2011 08:38 AM

I just got a flyer from Wal-Mart saying that fabrics are returning to their stores. Sadly, my closest store will not be one of the stores to get their fabric back. :(

AnitaSt 09-15-2011 09:30 AM

I refuse to shop at Wal Mart based on their corporate policies; the way they treat employees; and the foreign origin of most of their merchandise.

But this Assistant Manager James shows that employees can be radically different than the company they work for. Good for him!

Wow, Valsma, why were you so mean to that poor store manager? Yeah, I get it, you wanted the fabric. He probably only gave you the fabric for free because he couldn't wait to see you leave.

Don't assume because I chewed his butt that I was mean about it. Prehaps you don't know how to give a butt chewing without being mean but if done correctly you can.

My attitude goes directly to customer service and I don't alway hold the employee responsible, especially in big box stores. These giant corporations want our money but think we should sit back and take whatever crappy service they offer up to us. If we continue to accept it without making our thoughts on it known, then we deserve it. I however will not take it anymore. If I lived in a town that I had access to other retailers that offered a fabric dept. or even a fabric store where I can afford the fabrics I would shop there, unfortunately I don't. I live in a small town with one LQS of high priced fabrics and one WalMart. At the price of gas and being a one income family I have to budget how often I run to the next town 20 mins away where they have JoAnnes, also getting over priced.
Like with even my DRs. office I don't let them abuse my time anymore. One thing I learned in school was my time is as valuable as thiers.

Sierra 09-15-2011 10:06 AM

Sometimes when I read good things about Walmart (besides being less expensive) I wish I could shop there, but their emplyee policies suck. I had a friend who was told she was the very best to replace the moving-on supervisor, but that too many people are not comfortable working under a woman!!!! And, the reason they have only part time is so they won't have to pay benefits. And they buy the cheapest Chinese junk. Someday China will upgrade and start producing reliable things, but that isn't prevalent yet. We have our own little protest going.

Sierra 09-15-2011 10:06 AM

Ooophs, saw someone else just said this.

writerwomen 09-15-2011 10:37 AM

Sounds great - truth is he probably had no idea how to scan the code and print a ticket though

blossom808 09-15-2011 10:39 AM

Dang did you luck out..

vivoaks 09-15-2011 10:58 AM

At least you were finally able to get your fabric. And you probably said what we would all like to say at one time or another. Thanks!

kberry 09-15-2011 11:01 AM

I had a problem in the paint dept. once. Waited for what seems like forever for help. Asked every employee I saw to help or call someone. No one helped or called.
Did you know they don't like that when the customer picks up the phone and uses the intercom to ask for help in a department. Nope! They don't like it at all.
Got my paint mixed and royally made the gal mad. Don't care she should have been doing her job instead of gabbing with another employee while stocking.

The fabric dept. we have is nice. Usually don't have any problems getting cuts made. Fabric isn't too bad but you have to watch it if you get it off the cheap table. It usually will have flaws in it.
Employees in that dept. are pretty nice.

Grocery is terrible! Can't understand why that area is so messy and looks dirty all the time.

Absolutely refuse to buy my meats from walmart. Always had to return it so I quit and buy it at a better store.

sandwich child 09-15-2011 11:06 AM

That happened to me one time in Hobby Lobby. After repeated ringing of the bell to attract a "cutter" I finally measured and cut the fabric myself, filled out the charge slip, took it to the cashier and paid for it!

Tammy, Hopefully you have opened the eyes of one store asst. mgr. and it will be solved for you. When you contact the corperate offiice informing them of this situation they will realize the fabric dept. can't make any money if they aren't servicing their customers and they will be loosing money and want to remove the dept. again.

Hey, I really think you should tell us how to make that announcement ;)

Cagey 09-15-2011 12:49 PM

Talk about a coincidence - I stopped in our Wal-Mart fabric department today during my lunch and no one was around to cut fabric. A young man from electronics came over and cut the fabric for 2 of us that were waiting. Later I saw the gal that is the manager of that department and she told me that she is in charge of 3 other departments plus fabrics/crafts and they are not in the same area. I feel sorry for the employees that are spread so thin they can't take care of their customers. I'm sure they don't like it either.

Pat G 09-15-2011 01:20 PM

The only Wal Mart in my area that has fabrics is having the same problem. You have to run around looking for somebody to cut fabric. They even took away the bell to ring for attention. Very frustrating.
Good for you for realizing you should let the higher ups at the store know about this very helpful person.

crafty_linda_b 09-15-2011 01:26 PM

The walmart in Klamath Falls Oregon never has anyone in the fabric dept in the evenings. Usually by 7 pm they are gone...this store is open all night long...so some crazy quilter might wake up at midnight and want fabric *L* don't they realize that can happen?? I am glad you got a good manager to take care of your problem. crafty_linda_b

luce321 09-15-2011 03:12 PM

When I was grocery shopping in Wal Mart the other day. I saw a manager and asked him if the fabric dept. was returning. He told me yes, but he did not know when. We will see.

Rubyrednails2 09-15-2011 04:09 PM

I heard they closed the fabric departments because they didn't sell enough fabric to make it worthwhile. Well, Helloooooo....you have to keep someone there to cut fabric if you expect to sell it. I can't tell you how many times I have waited 10-15 minutes and rang that dang bell and no one answers the call. My best friend one time cut her own fabric and when she got to the register and they saw no ticket for it...and she said SHE cut it because no one was back there...that is when the manager shows up. Just gripes me how they run some of the stores.

angelwingz 09-15-2011 04:26 PM

our walmart is the same way... i wish they would realize it 'is' worth it to have someone run the dept all day, instead of upsetting the customers with no one to cut the fabric.

Nettie Phillips 09-15-2011 04:32 PM

Pretty fabric and someone needs to let them know what is going
on so hopefully they will fix the problem.

thrums 09-15-2011 04:59 PM

I too ran into this problem in Nashville. The lady in charge of cutting was trying to load all the craft dept do-dads on its wall. You cold tell she was really frazzled trying to keep two departments going. She was very polite and helpful inspite of it all.

I wrote to my local WalMart today and asked it to read this thread. It took about two minutes to fill out the form.

You can go to http://walmartstores.com/7663.aspx and enter your zip. The message will go to the nearest WalMart. If you want to contact corporate you have to call or mail you message.

It ended up you did good but I know your frustaration I don't understand why they can't have someone in the fabric
dept. I walked by our fabric dept atn WM today and some
guy there was cutting fabric. What a shame that store really frustrates me I am not at loss sending e-mails to let them know how I feel.

ribbbbons 09-15-2011 06:50 PM

I have a app on my iphone that resembles the ringer bell...so every time I need assistance i turn my phone sound up and hit my bell, i works every time. sometimes there was NO BELL to start with, but they came running, I never let on it was a phone app., but it did the trick and when i left the area, they were still looking for the bell. lol

ROFL. Sounds like my Walmart and unfortunately I work there. Are they all the same? Wow. I am still stupified at how they stay in business. But yeah, the dept has two women that work there. The other part of their department is way across on the other side of the store, which has the yarn and other craft items. It makes no sense whatsoever. They get away with running us thin and frazzled, because we do need the job. Yes, dept managers run 2 and 3 departments at a time. If they are lucky, they will have an associate in their dept to help. Otherwise, it is just them and they work from 7-4pm. Then it is up for grabs on who may have the time to even go by their dept after that. Someone it making money though, they keep opening new stores.

Dee 09-15-2011 08:10 PM

I just wish we could get ours back.

auniqueview 09-15-2011 08:55 PM

If you want to call Walmart's customer service, number is 1-800-Walmart. If you are in the store, and just happen to pick up one of their phones, and dialing 9 gets you out, it's 1-700-Walmart, normal office hours. But you didn't hear it from me.

The majority of the phones will not get you an outside line.

thrums 09-16-2011 06:03 AM

Hmmm......

Perhaps this is a way to get salespeople back into departments.....at least to monitor the phone usage.

I am sure Sam Walton is turning in his grave. We need to start a call in and write in campaign to WalMart Corporate as this problem is also in my area. They may be getting fabrics back but they have no one to manage or run the department. So sad. At least we are blessed with two great fabric stores 40 miles away that are locally owned.

I agree with Sam turning in his grave. It is really sad how things are run.

valsma 09-16-2011 09:41 AM

I have mentioned this before, but I have written email after email to corporate about the lousy customer service, mis-priced items, ect. in the local store. The store managers call you and tell you what they are going to do to fix the problem, which they do and it last about 5 mins. It is a joke. I still write corprate, but this time I figured a person needed to hear me.
I actually feel for the people on the front lines, they are just trying to keep thier jobs by having to work from dept. to dept. and they are truely under appreciated.

It gets bad at a lot of the store. My girlfriend once was allowed to walk up to the Store in Redmond when they were in the middle of a bomb scare. The police hadn't blocked an driveway and everyone from the store who had been evacuated were out in the parking lot. She drove in, parked and approached the building. People saw her walk up but not one person tried to stop her, not even the people standing around just inside the entrance who should have shooed her away and told her why. Turned out to be a false alarm, but what if it hadn't been? We were visiting that weekend and I told her to send an email to corporate and tell them what had happend. Next morning they were on the phone and were telling her that company protocol on those situations had been overlooked and they were extremely sorry.
WalMart is a needed service in this world today because besides resale shops most low income people can't afford to shop in high end stores today. Most of us have to shave pennys where we can. This is an international company that can offer up good customer service as well as good prices if they wanted to. Maybe if they spent less time having their morning cheer sessions with associates for WalMart and taught customer service people wouldn't be so cranky.

illinois 09-16-2011 09:57 AM

Do we remember when WalMart advertised that their merchandise was Made in the USA? Must have been when Sam and Mrs. Sam were still around.....

I once taught a tall nice guy clerk from some other department who was filling in for lunch....how to measure and cut fabric!
We both enjoyed the experience.

goosepoint 09-16-2011 05:55 PM

I love the Walmart fabrics but I cannot stand for long periods of time waiting for someone to assist me. Wonder what they would do if after a 5 minute wait we reached into our purses and pulled out a pair of sissors and a tape measure? If no one will come I would assume it is self service. he he! "It is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission !
