Today I found the perfect fabrics to work with a fabric i've had in my stash for sometime. The colors work so well. Problem, it was Wal Mart. Well after a looooong time frame, no associates, multipule calls for associate, I finally got an assitant manager to come over and cut fabric. Not even his dept. Let's just say I let him have it. I told him the fabric dept. was broken, what was the point of putting the dept. back in if nobody can buy fabric when they want it. If it was a self serve dept. it would be no big deal, but this is a dept. that cannot be self serve. That by putting the fabric in the middle of the store it was easy for the associates to ignore customers there. He finally gets my fabric cut (would have walked away if it hadn't been the perfect colors) broken telxon, no telxon/printer, fire drill, I get my fabric but no price tickets on any of it.
Well bless his heart and I will be calling the store to give him kuddos, he gave it to me for free. I told him that wasn't needed just fixing the fabric dept would be enough, but he said no it was mine for nothing. Over 4 yards. He was so sweet even after taking an butt chewing and yes I did apologize for chewing him out so bad, that I realize it isn't really his fault, but a lot is what corporate sets down. He was still very sweet and he made the aggrivation right. Some of them do care.

Picture was taken with cellphone so color quality is not very good. They are all beautiful jewel tones. The square is the one they go with.

For my trouble

beautiul fabrics and so happy you told him about the problems in the fabric department

Stitchnripper 09-14-2011 12:50 PM

Glad to hear you got your fabrics. Poor fellow, I'll bet he wants the flexibility to do things right - would be easier on him!

MellieKQuilter 09-14-2011 01:01 PM

Yes! Call the store and give him kudos! (maybe leave out the free part, dont want to get him in trouble..)

Raggiemom 09-14-2011 01:09 PM

Always great to hear a positive customer service story.

GreatStarter 09-14-2011 01:18 PM

Wow, good for you. I would probably have gotten really upset and just left without my fabric. The Walmarts here still have no signs of fabric returning. But if it does there won't be any employees around to cut it. You can never get help and when you luck out and someone comes they don't know anything about the dept you are in. It is extremely frustrating.

Good for you! Fabulous fabrics too!

Dina 09-14-2011 02:25 PM

They have the employees at Wal-Mart spread so thin anymore. It is also hard to find anyone to cut fabric in my Wal-Mart. As near as I can tell, no one gets over 25 hours a week, and everyone has about three departments they are responsible for when they are there. Just plain wrong for everyone...

SuziC 09-14-2011 03:33 PM

Good for you

blueangel 09-14-2011 03:52 PM

That was nice of him.

OneMoreQuilt 09-14-2011 04:24 PM

It's nice to know there are still some people out there who care!!

Kitsie 09-14-2011 04:43 PM

Wow, I can see why you stuck it out for that fabric! Good for James

SMR 09-14-2011 04:58 PM

I have my local walmart's phone number in my cell phone contacts and if I don't get response to bell I call and for assistance to be sent to fabric cutting table. Usually don't have to call more than once. They even hid the bell to call for assistance once but after assistant manager answered my summons and I told her bell was no longer out it reappeared

Some I understand are lucky if they get 20 hours a week. It is just wrong to spread these guys so thin. Yet while their employees are working their backsides off for the little they earn, corportate is raking it in. I know they have expenses, but really how about spending a little extra on a few more employees. Same with their self check out. I won't use it because;
1. I will always have an item that rings up wrong
2. Have to wait in that line almost as long as one manned by a cleark
3. and I don't get paid to do their jobs.

slk350 09-14-2011 05:06 PM

I had the same thing happen to me a while back in Walmart. I went in at night to get a few yards of fabric that I needed more of to finish making my son & grandson matching pj bottoms. I waited to get the fabric cut for over 45 minutes, asking people that went by to get someone, went to the front of the store twice and was really frustrated...BUT I really had to get the fabric. Finally a manager came by and cut it for me and gave it to me FOR FREE. I did explain that I wouldn't have waited so long , but I had to have it. I thanked him, but was still aggravated.

mzsooz 09-14-2011 05:11 PM

I'm glad you are going to call and tell them what an exceptional job he did in placating you. Our store had a wonderful woman that was there always but she died suddenly (I was a friend of her DD). They took awhile replacing her and did so with a really nice older lady. She always asked me what I was making and telling me what projects she had going. Sadly..I don't see her there anymore. I'm hoping it is just because I'm not there at the right time.

Boy, if you think waiting to get fabric cut try getting someone to help you get fish!!! We waited forever and finally some kid that was clueless fished them out for us. My DD was going nuts because she used to work in a pet store and wanted to get the net from him and do it herself! LOL

brushandthimble 09-14-2011 05:14 PM

yes, please do call or even better write a letter. My son is a supervisor, wouldn't believe how many complain even when it is thecustomers fault. Me included do not accknowledge when I get good service; I think about and plan to but never follow through.

Greenheron 09-14-2011 05:36 PM

Good for you, standing up and asserting yourself!

wanda lou 09-14-2011 05:49 PM

Normally I would have left it on the counter and waked away, but these fabrics go so well with the one that I had. I hate that when that happen.
I don't have a problem complaining anymore but I also know when someone deserves a pat on the back for giving good customer service. I called and let the manager know what happend and they thanked me for recognizing James helping me and apologized again for my trouble.
Rats! I wish I had thought of it, but it just came to mind. The fabric dept. was actually neat this time. No fabric dragging the floor, not piled all over the place and only one cart sitting in the way of the cutting table. So someone is making an effort which I do appreciate.

Wow, Valsma, why were you so mean to that poor store manager? Yeah, I get it, you wanted the fabric. He probably only gave you the fabric for free because he couldn't wait to see you leave.

misscarol 09-15-2011 02:38 AM

I have yet to find a Wal-Mart that has good customer service. I hope they are out there somewhere.

smagruder 09-15-2011 03:58 AM

I visited one of our WalMarts yesterday that did not close down but were going to. About two months ago they put the department back in. I am NOT impressed.. Very little fabric and not good choices. I hope they do a better job in the future but there isn't enough room to add more fabric. I will try another store that had a fabulous department. They had lots of fabric and have just reopend that department. If not, I will just go back to JoAnns, Hancocks, or my lqs.

Great idea! My Wal-Mart still doesn't have fabric yet but you never know.

scrappy2 09-15-2011 04:20 AM

Sorry!

kuntryquilter 09-15-2011 04:27 AM

I just wish we had a fabric department.

damaquilts 09-15-2011 04:31 AM

I had the phone # of the Walmart in Ga on my phone. I called when I needed paint mixed. I don't know why I never thought about calling for the fabric. I did send an email one day when I went in and the deli was closed. Got a lot of platitudes but the service didn't get any better. The Walmart here is suppose to be getting a fabric dept back but I will believe when I see it. And the LQS and Joanns and Hancock are not that far away. Although I really can't say enough good about Fabric Hut in Norfolk. That is going to be my new favorite fabric store.

elm 09-15-2011 04:39 AM

The colors match beautifully. My quilt class instructor just bought some fabric at Wallmart. When she washed it, it shrank half an inch in each direction. Good thing she had more than enough for what she was making.

Mona Marie 09-15-2011 05:03 AM

I have walked out without fabric after waiting and no one came. I let the cashier know about it. Next time went in someone came faster!

auniqueview 09-15-2011 05:04 AM

There is a phone hanging on the wall right in the fabric dept of my favorite Walmart. Lol. And I used to work for Walmart. Uh....you can always pick it up and dial O and ask the operator to send someone over...good luck with that, unless it's after 11 pm. I think maybe I had better not tell you how to make the ATTENTION WALMART announcements, lol.

Roberta 09-15-2011 05:11 AM

Another customer and I waited 20 minutes, rang the bell numerous times and nobody ever came. I just left and went ot Joann's where I had great customer service.

SunlitenSmiles 09-15-2011 05:19 AM

we still do not have a Walmart, maybe if we did it would have fabric, maybe if we had a Walmart and it had fabric there would be someone to measure, cut, and price it. LOL,ROFLOL (sigh)

Tweety2911 09-15-2011 05:49 AM

I have the same problem with my Walmart. Many times I walk out in frustration. But I don't blame you for sticking around, those are gorgeous fabrics. Glad everything turned out well.

Amythyst02 09-15-2011 05:54 AM

Honestly I have the same issues when visiting Wal Mart. I once had the Asst Mgr help me as well. I did not get my fabric for free, but I did get it cut. There is absolutely no reason we should have to wait this long. I did get a flyer in the mail the other day saying over 2000 stores now had fabric. Of course what they did not say was there was no one to help you get it cut. lol.

Becky Mc 09-15-2011 06:18 AM

I worked at walmarts once and I will tell you I had no life my shift was 1-9 worked most weekends couldn't get a day shift. By far it was the worst job I have ever had. I hated it worked in the fabric/craft dept, but had to do artifical flowers across the store and get yelled at if you weren't there to cut fabric. If I had somewhere else to shop I would but I live 50 miles from the closest larger city.

klutzyquilter 09-15-2011 06:20 AM

The WalMart I go to has a sign "Fabric and Crafts" .... no fabric in sight. Called to this to attention of manager some time ago ... sign still there, still no fabric. to WalMart in Los Angeles.

CarrieAnne 09-15-2011 06:24 AM

Wow, that really was nice of him!

Now that is pure genius! Thanks for the idea. Joanns is another place where this idea is needed. You get your fabric, you get your notions and then you stand and stand and stand waiting for someone to ring it up. They used to have a bell, but now they don't and so you stand and wait. Well, next time, I'm going to call them on my cell

pnptrapp 09-15-2011 07:08 AM

I used to work at a wal-mart store and I have to tell you there are a few deptarments that are not allowed to be left without someone there to cover them, #1 is Electronics, #2 jewelry #3 sporting goods, #4 CRAFTS AND FABRICS. I know this was one of the biggest complaints that wal-mart has and it's sad it still hasn't been fixed. I have NEVER worked in the craft dept, but have worked many hours at the cutting table.

As far as the fabric coming back and small amount, most stores are waiting for a remodel to bring in more fabric. They'll do this when they rearrange the store and give the craft dept back there fabric footage.

illinois 09-15-2011 07:09 AM

We haven't lost our fabric dept but in the remodel of the store, they have cut back on the space and the arrangement of the dept. I should thank them for that as it is saving me a bundle! Rarely did I leave that store without some piece of fabric but the last 3 times I've been there I haven't purchased an inch!! I see few people browsing the dept since the remodel and none buying. The cutting table it less than 1/2 the space it used to be and there is nobody in the dept. The last time I got fabric there I rang the bell at least 3 times before a girl hurried over--from the paint dept!! The girls who used to work there and knew fabrics aren't anywhere in sight. They have reduced their thread inventory to a very small rack. Can tell that whoever redesigned the store hasn't a clue about marketing fabric and sewing items. Right next to the squished fabric dept are wide aisles for crafts and party items but no shoppers there either. And besides all that--they've raised their prices, too!!!!
