Isn't that the way. No appreciation for the work that goes into a project or the love that it was made with. Just the "pretty"! Smile and think that maybe next year they will put it right side up. Same with the other gifts you made them. Merry Christmas and good going to be done so far ahead of time.

I remember when I was a little bitty thing & my mom made me a quilt for my & my sisters bed. I always wanted to put it on the bed with the backing showing. I didn't want anyone to see the "patches". She Lways used beautiful fabric for the backs. She never ever commented on it. It took me until I was about 12 & l was learning to piece quilts that I realized the work involved. So maybe they will realize that it takes time & effort at some point. When I did realize this, I felt really bad.

Isn't the point of all our work and love to make a "pretty" quilt that they will love? I guess they (the donees) don't like the traditional quilts and like the whole cloth look of the back. Many quilters put tremendous hours into a whole cloth quilt so we shouldn't put down that look when it is on the back of our quilts. Although I know we seldom have the quality of whole cloth on the back that is put into the others. Still, I feel we should acknowledge that genre of quilt when we find that a relative or friend has expressed a preference for it.
yep...I hear you. I made a lap quilt for my brother the fishing nut. Fish all appiqued, underwater stuff all appliqued, quilted in wavy lines. Just appliqued the hell out of it. You guessed it...he loved the backing! But I still love him! Just hate his taste LOL
I have had this happen. My SIL likes the front of the quilt. But she LOVES the fabric I used for the back because she "chose it." I have gone to her house and seen the quilt on the bed backside up!
PS other people think it is odd that she has the backside up since the front is so pretty. Oh well. |
Maybe there is a lesson here for all of us to put much more effort into our quilting patterns because they may be what is being shown, not the patterned blocks.
The backing probably shows the quilting to great advantage, and some people really like that look. Either way, they like what you made.
Bless your heart. Non quilter's just have no idea what type of skill and time such a design takes to make.
We are there with you and are extremely happy you were able to finish it and give it to them. |

At least you are going with the flow and not throwing a hissy-fit :) over what they have "done" to you tree skirt ... and letting it spoil Christmas for all. Good luck with your spiral .... they may surprise you. And too, remember in years to come they may change and say OMG the back/front side is a beauty and reverse their usage. A couple of years ago, my oldest son called me on my cell...Said that they didn't have a tree skirt and did I have an extra. I told him where to find it...and when I opened the box I find that he took the one that I had quilted and finished after Christmas the year before...I was brand new and I never got to use it because it never came home. I told him that he took the wrong one and he said that he liked the one he took and that he wasn't bringing it back. KIDS!!! |
This is the reason I always try to use a great-looking backing fabric that's a little different than the front fabrics. It doubles the chances the receiver will love it and have use for it. Of course, then I go crazy trying to pick a binding color (I'm not quite up to doing that two color binding yet.). Great job on creating something they love - although it wasn't how you expected. I hope we get to see the pics!

On the positive side. They like it. They are using it.
Bless you for your thoughtful & loving gift. |

I have always loved the back of quilts. I know that sounds awful and I do appreciate the front, but sometimes the quilting is soooo beautiful I just like to look at it.
It's a compliment to your quilting skills. Sometimes I like my quilt backs better, too.
Give them time, they'll want a change in a year or two and then the top of tree skirt will be the crowning touch to the tree once again, just like the back is now. Sounds beautiful, please remember to post pics.
Merry Christmas and enjoy your visit with your family. |
Different strokes for different folks.
TOO, TOO funny for words! Bet they are young, and will come to appreciate your harder work in time.:)
Glad to hear they like, regardless of which side! Happy Holidays!!
reminds me of the pieced basket quilt I made for new SIL, she only shows the back of the quilt.. She apparently doesn't like patchwork. She thanked me for bedspread. <sigh>
I appreciate all your hard work making that tree skirt. I long arm quilted 2 of those tree skirts made withthe 9 degree ruler and the person who pieced them also said it was VERY time consuming. But those tree skirts were absolutely gourgeous and I can understand that you would be disappointed after putting all that work into it and then they use it with the back side showing!
To all of you who have quilts being shown featuring the back side, are you planning on making another quilt for these relatives, friends that is a whole cloth? Or are you planning on giving them another quilt at all? Or what?
Hey,,,,,they loved what you did....be happy. They could have just said oh and put it in their closet.
I once made a miniature tumbler quilt for my mother to put on her bed in the nursing home. She, too, liked the back with large roses best. I had to rationalize that the rose was her favorite flower and they were large enough for her to see them
easily. |
I can believe it - not everyone "GETS" quilting, I lookforward to the pics...:)
I have gotten comments like that too. Kinda makes you wonder why you put in all that work. It also helps me with decisions about the next gifts for that person. Just know that they DO appreciate it, even tho' they may not understand how much work you put in it. It is a gift from the heart and that is what is important. Some day they WILL understand.
Good that they used the tree skirt.
Isn't it nice to know it is loved? Even if it is the back side.
I gave a log cabin tree skirt to my SIL. The back is just plain red. She uses it with the back up. Go figure!
Try again. I'd love to see what they thought was so special about the backing!
Reminds me of the wall hanging I gave my son-in-law for his birthday. Lots of applique, He hung it in the bathroom showing the back side, using nails. I had a pocket for hanging on it & a label on the back. When I asked him why he hung it back side showing, he said he wanted everyone to know who made it. I was so angry about the nails I was afraid to mention them.
Fortunately, I know my mom loves the fabric in the quilt I'm making them for Christmas. She saw me buying it, and liked it, that's how I decided what to make for her.
Kuntryquilter, LOL, I bet you were at a loss for words when he said he turned it backwards so people would know who made it. He was really giving you quite a compliment.
I can see why some people like the whole cloth look of the back of the quilt. I like it too, but I do know the difference between the front and the back. As everyone else has said, your goal was to make them something they loved, and you did. |

OK, I'm still having a problem with the pic of the tree skirt, (which is the subject of this whole thing) BUT I did manage to resize the Spiral table runner and the small tabletopper. Which, BTW - my DIL went nuts over and did NOT like the backing better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, she really went NUTS over the spiral tablerunner. |
That happen to me with a quilt I made for my daughter's couch-they liked the back side better-LOL

I like for my backs to be as pretty as the front. Consider it a compliment!
